How long is an ell? What is the largest size of champagne bottle?
How do you measure the heat of a chilli pepper? Why is the depth of
water measured in fathoms? And what is a cubit? The Curious History
of Weights & Measures tells the story of how we have come to
quantify the world around us. Looking at everything from carats,
pecks and pennyweights to firkins and baker's dozens through to
modern science-based standards such as kilograms and kilometres,
this book considers both what sparked the creation of myriad
measures and why there were so many efforts to usher in
standardisation. Full of handy conversion charts and beautiful
illustrations The Curious History of Weights & Measures is a
treasure trove of fun facts and intriguing stories about the
calculations we use every day.

Indoor residential environments have a direct influence on human
health, both in developed and developing countries. Significant
levels of indoor pollution can make housing unsafe and can
negatively impact on human health. Housing, therefore, is a key
health factor for people all over the world, and various parameters
such as air quality, ventilation, hygrothermal comfort, lighting,
physical environment, building efficiency, and others can
contribute to healthy architecture and the conditions that can
result from the poor application of these parameters. Health and
Well-Being Considerations in the Design of Indoor Environments
addresses issues concerning indoor environmental quality (IEQ),
including air quality and ventilation, access to daylight and
views, acoustic conditions, and control over lighting and thermal
comfort, as well as the impact that this environment can have on
human health and mental well-being. The book also investigates the
functional aspects of interior design such as whether the layout
provides easy access to tools and sufficient space for occupants.
It also considers energy demand and building energy losses due to
such issues as air renovations and enclosure infiltrations.
Covering topics such as sustainable design, pollution, building
materials, and lighting, this book is an effective resource for
students, professors, academicians, researchers, architects,
designers, planners, engineers, interior designers, building
managers, construction companies, and other industry professionals
looking to increase building occupant satisfaction by considering
all aspects of IEQ.
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER AND OFFICIAL COMPANION TO THE HIT BBC SERIES
BBC’s The Repair Shop is a place where Britain’s most skilled and caring craftspeople rescue and resurrect items that owners thought were beyond saving. Their shared love of craft has helped hundreds of people recover and relive cherished memories, and inspired millions to rediscover their own prized possessions. The skill required to properly restore those items may be beyond most of us, but there are small things we can all do to care for the items we love the most. How do you replenish the stuffing in your child’s beloved, tatty teddy bear, for instance? Or remove a water mark left on your wooden table? What’s the best way to prevent your leather from cracking?
Direct from the Repair Shop's 'Workshop of Dreams', this ‘make do and mend’ guide collects advice and stories from each of the show’s experts, to help you understand and care for those aging treasures and heirlooms around your house or gathering dust in the garage. Whether it’s wood, ceramics, leather or silverware, you will get to know your materials, tools and terms from Britain’s best, as the Repair Shop experts share their tips on restoring and conserving, reveal their favourite tools, and provide a series of small, manageable projects that help tackle the most common problems that occur in their given medium. Their book, like the show it accompanies, with help you safeguard your sentimental legacy for generations to come.
BBC Interior Design Masters finalist Siobhan Murphy brings you a
fearless home interiors handbook that celebrates maximalism and
shows you how your taste in fashion can influence your home decor.
'For me, maximalism is about using colour, patterns and textures in
a happy and joyful way. It's about showcasing your personality and
the things you love, both in the way you dress and in the way you
decorate your home. It's decorating from the heart, going with your
gut and not worrying what the neighbours will say.' Siobhan Murphy
This first-of-its-kind interiors handbook encourages you to think
about the colours, textures, patterns and prints that bring
happiness into your life, then shows you some clever ways to work
these elements into your home decor. A celebration of bold fashion
and maximalist interiors, More Is More Decor showcases key
maximalist influencers of the past and present, from Jayne
Mansfield to Jonathan Adler, before demonstrating how fashion and
other interests such as travel can inspire your interior design
choices. Fully illustrated throughout with photos of Siobhan's
incredible art deco home, as well as all of her favourite
influencers, it's a feast for the eyes and a book that can be pored
over or dipped in and out of. With Siobhan's guidance you'll find
the confidence to experiment, be bolder with your style and curate
a space that fills you with joy. It's time to banish the beige,
ditch the drab and throw the interiors rule book out of the window.

A true magnum opus, Cecil A. Hewett's English Historic Carpentry
appeals to every type of architectural historian, from the
connoisseur of cathedrals to the vernacular 'barn and cottage'
enthusiast. It also offers practical insight into the structure and
age of the old homes and outbuildings of Britain, and will reveal
that much timber-work is appreciably older than their owners might
think. This book will be a source of pride and inspiration to all
who work in timber today, showing that the master carpenters of the
past achieved their highest levels of craftsmanship well before the
master masons, and that they were their equals as medieval
architects. Beginning as a young upstart with wild theories, Hewett
grew to become the accepted authority on all matters of historic
carpentry and a pioneer of a whole new technology in the dating of
ancient buildings. In English Historic Carpentry, he provides the
definite statement of his work, superbly illustrated by his own
drawings. As Hewett maintained, 'the building is the document' and
this book will teach you how to read the evidence that is written
in wood.
This book contains all the necessary information on basic tools and
materials that the do-it-yourself enthusiast will need. It begins
with a section on tools and techniques, which covers the basic
items needed for most do-it-yourself jobs as well as giving a guide
to storing your tools. The chapter on equipment and materials
covers plaster, concrete and mortar, roofing materials, adhesives
and sealants, as well as fixings and fittings, flooring, painting
and wallpapering materials. The final section of the book consists
of projects involving basic carpentry skills. From simple projects,
such as putting up shelves, to more complex tasks, such as
replacing a section of skirting and boxing-in wall pipes, this
section will help you to carry out a variety of woodworking tasks.
