This English reissue CD has ten of the Nat King Cole Trio's 16 Decca recordings, plus 16 selections taken from their early days with Capitol. A single-disc sampler that can be most enjoyed by casual listeners rather than completists, the Avid set contains quite a few classic moments, including two of Cole's first hits ("Straighten Up and Fly Right" and the remake of "Sweet Lorraine"), many fine solos (the versions of "What Is This Thing Called Love," "Body and Soul" and "Easy Listenin' Blues" are particularly memorable), and strong interplay between pianist Cole, guitarist Oscar Moore and either Wesley Prince or Johnny Miller on bass. Although Nat does a bit of singing, there are almost as many group vocals and a healthy dose of instrumentals. All of the material is available elsewhere. ~ Scott Yanow

The Symphonica album was recorded during George’s wildly successful 2011-12 tour of the same name, a labour of love which fulfilled George’s long-standing ambition of showcasing his extraordinary vocals alongside an orchestra in some of Europe’s finest, most prestigious venues.

Like the tour, the Symphonica album comprises lovingly arranged and sung versions of carefully selected highlights from George’s sumptuous back catalogue plus interpretations of songs by some of George’s favourite artists.

Following the dark, expansive power of 2018’s Image and 2021’s minimal Several Others, Whispering Sons’ third album ‘The Great Calm’ represents a reimagining and rethinking, though this growth has produced a series of songs that are still defiantly and uniquely true to the group. With bass player and producer Bert Vliegen’s credentials to call on, rather than give the band musical sketches to be fleshed out later as he did previously, guitarist Kobe Lijnen was able to provide more fully formed pictures of his potential new songs. Recorded in four weeks – two in the Audioworkx studio near Eindhoven, Holland, before being finished at the start of 2023 using a homemade set-up on Vlieland, a small Dutch island just off the North Sea coast – the power, energy and beauty behind The Great Calm’s making is etched through the heart of each of its 12 songs.

"Yanni Live at the Acropolis" is the name of both an album and video by contemporary instrumental musician Yanni. Both were recorded live at the Herodes Atticus Theatre in Athens, Greece, on September 25, 1993; they were released in 1994. The album peaked at #1 on "billboard's Top new age Albums chart and at #5 on the billboard 200 chart. The video received an emmy nomination for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Lighting Direction (Electronic) for a Drama Series, Variety Series, Miniseries or a Special."

Bar Italia are the London based three-piece of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton. Their second full-length release of 2023; 'The Twits', follows on from the band's debut for Matador six months earlier. 'The Twits' was recorded by the trio over eight weeks from February 2023 in a makeshift home studio in Mallorca, and was mixed by Marta Salogni. It finds bar italia's economical yet evocative songcraft taking raucous, mystic, unkempt, occasionally sinister, and wholly committed turns. Songs like 'my little tony', with its in-the-red riff and excitable hooks, the cathartic four-on-the-floor of 'world's greatest emoter' and the festival tent psychedelia of 'Hi-fiver' need little in the way of exposition - these are exhilarating rock songs, if wayward and strange. Other moments see the band's increasingly signature, three-act mini-dramas moving into previously uncharted territory. Cristante, Fehmi and Fenton can each manifest a different melody, mood, and cadence - at times overlapping and linear, at others unexpectedly divergent - often within the space of thirty seconds, a tag team rooted in shared language and kinship.

Following his beloved 2021 album; 'Two Saviors', 'Haunted Mountain' marks Meek's third solo album. 'Haunted Mountain' is about love and. something other. Something bigger than love, something that doesn't challenge love exactly but stands in contrast to it. A soulfulness, or a soul-seeking fullness. Meek says that loves songs are the hardest write. 'Not break-up songs, but an actual love song written in earnest? That is taboo now', he says. 'Sometimes it can feel like all the great love songs have already been written'. Lead single 'Haunted Mountain' is anchored by sweet lyrics penned by Meek and Holland, who is also from Texas and shares co-writing credits on five of Haunted Mountain's eleven songs.
