Integrating Information in Built Environments - From Concept to Practice (Paperback): Adriana X. Sanchez, Keith Hampson,... Integrating Information in Built Environments - From Concept to Practice (Paperback)
Adriana X. Sanchez, Keith Hampson, Geoffrey London
R1,483 Discovery Miles 14 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In an increasingly globalised built environment industry, achieving higher levels of integration across organisational and software boundaries can lead to improved economic, social and environmental outcomes. This book is the direct result of a collaborative global network of industry and academic researchers spread across nine countries as part of CIB's (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction) Task Group 90 (TG90) Information Integration in Construction (IICON). The book provides a broad view of some of the opportunities and challenges brought by integrating information across organisational and system boundaries in the built environment industry. Chapters cover a large range of topics and are separated into three sections: resources, processes and added value. They provide a much-needed international perspective on a current global evolution in the industry and present leading original research and valuable lessons for researchers, industry practitioners, government clients and policy makers across the industry. Key features include: a broad range of topics that are not covered elsewhere in the literature; contributions from a diverse group of industry research leaders from across the globe; exemplar case studies providing real-world examples of where information integration has been a key factor for success or lack thereof has been at the root cause of failure; an analysis of future priority areas for research and development investment as well as their strategic implications for public and private decision-makers; the book will deliver innovation in best practice methodology for information sharing across disciplines and between the design, construction and asset management sectors.

EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998): Kim Viborg Andersen EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998)
Kim Viborg Andersen
R5,777 Discovery Miles 57 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When researching, teaching or working with information systems in the public sector, one is left with few or often no textbooks that provide useful case studies or surveys on the implementation and effects of integrating information technologies in the organizations' operations. This is surprising since in most first world countries the public sector consumes a substantial part of the gross national product. Even more astonishing is the vast amount of financial and organizational resources that are spent developing and implementing various information systems. We decided to write this book to provide information for those studying information systems at business schools, information and computer departments at collegesl universities, and for those working hands-on with EDI and data networking in public administration. Thus, our primary target groups for this book are professionals, training (MA-courses), computer science, MBA, MP A, and political science. EDI has been seen as a means to wire the various policy areas in the public sector. Those included are not limited strictly to the public organizations, but extend to their trade partners. Also, government has sought ways to stimulate the usage of ED I in the private sector beyond those transactions involving direct communication with the public sector. In this book, we have contributors from eight countries and a total of 14 chapters reporting on issues of importance when developing and implementing EDI, when government wants to stimulate the diffusion of EDI in society, and when organizations want to address the impact of their investments in ED .

EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Kim Viborg Andersen EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Kim Viborg Andersen
R5,978 Discovery Miles 59 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The public sector uses electronic data interchange (EDI) in areas such as the health sector, procurement, meat inspection, taxation, transportation, and the courts. Also, government encourages private sector to enhance their use of electronic communication to secure faster and more reliable exchange of data, to save manpower, and to enable organizational transformation to the information society. In EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector authors from eight countries report on the modes of governmental intervention to stimulate the usage of EDI and the challenges facing government as they try to smoothen their own units via organizational management. With cases (a total of 14 chapters) from Singapore, Denmark, USA, Sweden, England, Australia, and the Netherlands, this book finds that government in some countries is ahead of the private sector in utilization of EDI and that government at both supranational, central and local levels are active players on the field. Local levels of government and the quasi-governmental organizations provide an important supplement to the efforts by central government to increase the overall usage of EDI. EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector also indicates that the payoff from investments in EDI are slow to evolve. Dreams of quick return are not likely to emerge. Also, return of investments are highly linked to the organizations' ability to change their work processes along with the investments in EDI. The authors indicate that many public sector organizations lack the steam and vision necessarily to transform the government to a more technological based organization, where public procurement, taxation, medicine ordering etc. takes advantage ofthe potentials in EDI and data networking. EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector will be of interest to all researchers and practitioners in MIS, Computer Science and International Trade working on the adoption of new technology.

This book documents the research I conducted on the subject of Electronic Data Inter change during my time at the Institute of Business Informatics, University of Berne, Switzerland. In this effort I enjoyed a great deal of help from numerous others, in cluding professional colleagues, interview partners, and members of my family. Even though I cannot possibly mention them all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for their selfless support. Above all, I am grateful to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Knolmayer who contributed to the book both in its formative stages and throughout its development. He has been an unwavering source of encouragement during the many difficult stages of the investigation and I greatly benefitted from our discussions of the subject matter. Moreover, he was ex tremely generous with his time in carefully reviewing all the five chapters. The fmancial support for this book came from the Hasler Foundation in Berne. I wish to thank the Foundation, and especially its Managing Director, Dr. P.A. Jaeger, for funding the empirical part of the research project. Likewise, I am grateful to the Uni versity of Berne for providing me with the necessary computer and other resources. The Institute of Business Informatics should be commended particularly for its very stim ulating work environment."

Anomaly detection is the detective work of machine learning: finding the unusual, catching the fraud, discovering strange activity in large and complex datasets. But, unlike Sherlock Holmes, you may not know what the puzzle is, much less what "suspects" you're looking for. This O'Reilly report uses practical examples to explain how the underlying concepts of anomaly detection work. From banking security to natural sciences, medicine, and marketing, anomaly detection has many useful applications in this age of big data. And the search for anomalies will intensify once the Internet of Things spawns even more new types of data. The concepts described in this report will help you tackle anomaly detection in your own project. Use probabilistic models to predict what's normal and contrast that to what you observe Set an adaptive threshold to determine which data falls outside of the normal range, using the t-digest algorithm Establish normal fluctuations in complex systems and signals (such as an EKG) with a more adaptive probablistic model Use historical data to discover anomalies in sporadic event streams, such as web traffic Learn how to use deviations in expected behavior to trigger fraud alerts

EDI in Europe (Hardcover): H Krcmar EDI in Europe (Hardcover)
H Krcmar
R3,049 Discovery Miles 30 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The automatic exchange of data and structured documents, and the implications of 'paperless trade' is a key issue for business in the Europe of the 21st century. EDI in Europe is part of a Europe wide effort to provide business with the best tools and practices in this vital area. At the beginning of this decade, the Commission of the European Communities launched the TEDIS Programme (Trade EDI Systems) in order to promote the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) in the European Community and to increase the competitiveness of European business. SISnet, a research consortium which includes academics from major European business schools and universities, was commissioned to study the use of EDI in Europe within the framework of the TEDIS programme. Specifically this was to take an audit of the adoption and implementation and then to assess its effects on the firms and industries using it. EDI is a recent phenomenon and since it can only really be studied in context, case studies have been used which will encourage understanding of the dynamics within individual settings. Cases spanning a wide range of industries come from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. EDI in Europe brings all the research together. The team's work is set to continue as the issues are analysed - it is ongoing and will affect business at all levels. EDI in Europe will help make everyone aware of EDI in practice and further its diffusion into, and acceptance by, the entire European business community.
