In Chapter 1 I was lonely and depressed, so I found myself on a
dating website. Once again looking for something that I never
thought I would see. While I was growing up, I did not have any
romantic relationship with anyone. I was a virgin until I was
twenty-two years old. When I lost my virginity to a one-night stand
that I also met on a dating website a couple of months beforehand.
However, I found myself looking through my messages on the website,
and I found one that called out to me. I looked at Ezekiel's
profile to see his name was Ezekiel Austin. He was thirty-one years
old and lived in Suffolk Virginia. His longest relationship lasted
ten years, and he divorced his ex-wife. I re-read the message he
sent me a couple of times. Then I got off the laptop to think about
what I wanted.
Born in a time when ignorance and superstition permeated their
culture, Moon Flower was doomed within her isolated "Tribe with no
name." Her affliction was misunderstood, casting her into the
shadows where she was forced to live until brutal events practiced
by a rogue 'man of the cloth' set her on a trail that did not
exist, and eventually to a conditional freedom. At her side rode
the handsome Comanche warrior whose life she had saved, her young
son and the elusive wolf that became a part of her life. Across the
burning wasteland they loved as they traveled in search of the
warrior's tribe. Accepted with open arms, again she saved the life
of the "God-man with pieces of the sky for eyes." With his life
hanging in the balance her spirit wraps around him to give him
strength to live beyond the torture that befell him. Safely within
the Comanche arms, Flower finally 'became', and traveled beside her
husband on the war trail as well as into captivity. Becoming a
trusted confidant of the war chief, she enjoyed a rare position
from which she could influence the decisions made on behalf of the
entire tribe, even to the point of saving them when her belly was
swollen with her husband's seed and 'death appeared riding on a
black horse'. Having been forced to cross the border into the
hostile land of 'the home of the Redman', later to become Oklahoma,
she discovers that her greatest challenge was as yet still before
her. Flower's greatest loss becomes her greatest find when she is
blessed four-fold. Out of the clay banks of Red River she taught
the Comanche women to build houses and homes when there were no
more buffalo to feed and house them and the long promised
government supplies were evenlonger in arriving to feed the hungry
and naked Native Americans. With unbelievable strength and
perseverance the bravery of this small woman set the standard that
the pioneer woman became known for, even as the women of today

Although Carmilla is a lesser known and far shorter Gothic vampire
story than the generally-considered master work of that genre,
Dracula, the latter is heavily influenced by Le Fanu's novella. In
the earliest manuscript of Dracula, dated 8 March 1890, the castle
is set in Styria, although the setting was changed to Transylvania
six days later. As with Dracula, critics have looked for the
sources used in the writing of the text. Matthew Gibson proposes
that Le Fanu used Dom Augustin Calmet's Dissertations sur les
apparitions des anges, des demons et des esprits, et sur les
revenants et vampires de Hongrie, de Boheme, de Moravie, et de
Silesie, which was first anonymously translated into English in a
single volume in 1759. Le Fanu was an Irish writer of Gothic tales
and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the
nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre
in the Victorian era. Three of his best known works are Uncle
Silas, "Carmilla" and The House by the Churchyard.
When Helen and Harold awake one morning transfigured into each
other, their world is thrown into chaos. Will the hostile
mother-in-law who refuses to believe that the pregnant woman is not
her daughter, but her daughter's husband, help solve their dilemma?
Will their burned out pastor offer them spiritual comfort? Can the
idealistic social worker who is also a fierce karate expert be a
source of pragmatic advice? Is a famous transvestite lawyer able to
provide them with legal aid? Will Harold opt for an abortion to
avoid subjecting his offspring to the stigma of having a mother who
is really its father? The reader will alternately roar with
laughter and shake her/his head in disbelief as one bizarre episode
follows another, blurring the lines between the sexes, as well as
those between reality and appearance. With THE CONCRETE LIONS, Don
LoCicero joins the exalted literary ranks of Franz Kafka, Nikolai
Gogol, Joseph Heller and Woody Allen.

A haunting tale of possession and exorcism, now reissued on the
seventieth anniversary of the year of its writing, the definitive
text of William S. Burroughs's early, long-unpublished novel, now a
cult classic and a highly regarded part of his oeuvre Originally
written in 1952 but not published till 1985, Queer is an enigma.
Both an unflinching autobiographical self-portrait and a
coruscatingly political novel, it is both Burroughs's only realist
love story and a montage of comic-grotesque fantasies that paved
the way for his masterpiece, Naked Lunch. Set in Mexico City during
the early fifties, Queer follows William Lee, the protagonist of
Burroughs's debut novel Junky, a man afflicted with acute heroin
withdrawal and romantic yearnings for Eugene Allerton. As Lee
breaks down over the course of his hopeless pursuit of desire from
bar to bar in the American expatriate scene, the trademark
Burroughsian voice emerges, a maniacal mix of self-lacerating humor
and the ugly American at his ugliest. Now reissued on the
seventieth anniversary of the year of its writing, this edition of
Queer features a contextualizing introduction by the eminent
Burroughs scholar Oliver Harris.
