Although Carmilla is a lesser known and far shorter Gothic vampire
story than the generally-considered master work of that genre,
Dracula, the latter is heavily influenced by Le Fanu's novella. In
the earliest manuscript of Dracula, dated 8 March 1890, the castle
is set in Styria, although the setting was changed to Transylvania
six days later. As with Dracula, critics have looked for the
sources used in the writing of the text. Matthew Gibson proposes
that Le Fanu used Dom Augustin Calmet's Dissertations sur les
apparitions des anges, des demons et des esprits, et sur les
revenants et vampires de Hongrie, de Boheme, de Moravie, et de
Silesie, which was first anonymously translated into English in a
single volume in 1759. Le Fanu was an Irish writer of Gothic tales
and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the
nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre
in the Victorian era. Three of his best known works are Uncle
Silas, "Carmilla" and The House by the Churchyard.
In 1917, sixteen-year-old Calla LaRocca is bound and determined to
go to a new secretarial college for women. Her immigrant father is
appalled at her interest in pursuing a career, but Calla is eager
to learn what she needs to fill a position vacated by a man doing
his duty to fight in the war.
While visiting her grandmother in Tennessee, Calla is
emotionally blindsided by David Sloan, a man whose ethnic
background is unacceptable to her family. David surreptitiously
teaches Calla many things, including how to maneuver a 1914 Mogul
tractor. He goes off to serve in the war and is wounded in battle.
When correspondence with her secret love comes to an abrupt end,
Calla realizes she must start her life anew.
When David is discharged from the United States Navy, he returns
stateside and learns that Calla has disappeared. Her family and
friends have no idea where she is. He searches feverishly for her
in her hometown and where she went to college. David returns to
Tennessee, where his wise old grandfather helps shine a light on
the young man's future.
Calla becomes the career girl she studied so hard to be, but
memories of David cling to her.
When Helen and Harold awake one morning transfigured into each
other, their world is thrown into chaos. Will the hostile
mother-in-law who refuses to believe that the pregnant woman is not
her daughter, but her daughter's husband, help solve their dilemma?
Will their burned out pastor offer them spiritual comfort? Can the
idealistic social worker who is also a fierce karate expert be a
source of pragmatic advice? Is a famous transvestite lawyer able to
provide them with legal aid? Will Harold opt for an abortion to
avoid subjecting his offspring to the stigma of having a mother who
is really its father? The reader will alternately roar with
laughter and shake her/his head in disbelief as one bizarre episode
follows another, blurring the lines between the sexes, as well as
those between reality and appearance. With THE CONCRETE LIONS, Don
LoCicero joins the exalted literary ranks of Franz Kafka, Nikolai
Gogol, Joseph Heller and Woody Allen.
Alexa Pharis is finally getting her life back together after a
violent break-up from her ex Bryce Jacobs. One night while out with

is trust him but the fear of being damaged makes her think twice.
When Bryce comes back into town she finds herself reaching for the
only thing that makes her feel safe and that's Jayce. Will she find
love and learn to trust again, or will Bryce finally destroy her by
instilling fear?
