Naohiro Matsumura-renowned as the founder of the study of shikake, the Japanese word for "device"-has devised a new approach to design as astonishingly simple in its logic as it is sophisticated in its psychology. For example: * a staircase painted like piano keys prompts people to exercise * a symbol of a shrine placed in a public square discourages vandalism Combining traditional Japanese aesthetics with the lessons of behavioural economics, Matsumura presents a tool kit for literally anyone who wants to create their own mindful designs-and reveals how shikakes can help us address big challenges, including even climate change. Mind-bending yet elegant, Shikake will inspire readers to appreciate-and transform-the analogue world around them.

This book tracks the evolution of feng shui in detail in China from 221 BC till the present day, and then its spread throughout SE Asia, and finally to the rest of the world in the last 35 years. This has never been done before in English. The only information on the history of feng shui occurs as scattered chapters in a number of books, but these books often repeat the same tired generalisations, and include many largely erroneous statements such as: 1. "Feng shui is 6000 years old." In fact the characters 'feng shui' were not used in this context before 320 CE. Even the older names (ti li, kan yi, etc.) for this practice do not occur in any surviving texts before 221 BC. 2. "Feng shui derives from the Yi Jing". In fact, apart from the 8 trigrams being used as basic directional indicators, no feng shui compass shows the 60 hexagrams till 1600 CE, and not the full 64 hexagrams till 1824. 3. "The feng shui compass derives from a magnetised spoon revolving on a plate." In fact this incorrect deduction made by Wang Chen-To in 1946 (and later reluctantly repeated by Needham) was completely discredited by several researchers in the 1990s. This book has been meticulously researched, from authoritative Chinese texts and the analysis of many antique lo p'ans, and gives the real history of feng shui. It contains the biographical details of many masters, and tracks the developments and people involved in propagating feng shui in the US, UK, Europe and China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, in the 20th and 21st century, right up to date in 2012. It clearly shows the different feng shui methods and masters, and how they relate to each other.

The term Fengshui, which literally means 'wind and water, ' is the ancient Chinese art of selecting an auspicious site to provide the most harmonious relationship between human and earth. The term is generally translated as 'geomancy, ' and has had a deep and extensive impact on Korean, Chinese, and other East Asian cultures. Hong-key Yoon's book explores the nature of geomantic principles and the culture of practicing them in Korean cultural contexts. Yoon first examines the nature and historical background of geomancy, geomantic principles for auspicious sites (houses, graves, and cities) and provides an interpretation of geomantic principles as practiced in Korea. Yoon looks at geomancy's influence on cartography, religion and philosophy, and urban development in both Korea and China. Finally, Yoon debates the role of geomancy in the iconographical warfare between Japanese colonialism and Korean nationalism as it affected the cultural landscape of Kyongbok Palace in Seou

"The Feng Shui Diaries" are an account of the activities of Richard Ashworth, one of Britain's very few feng shui men: touching, informative, and very funny. They cover the human stories of why people call him in and what changes as a result. In his own words; "Sometimes I move a mirror, sometimes furniture. Usually I place water very precisely. Generally, I talk a lot. Stuckness, depression, addiction, ovarian cysts, infertility, lack of success are all grist to the mill, but above all, relationships: Moira wanted to be free of her ex-husband. I suggested the first step might be to stop sleeping with him. The house was full of shields and discs, yang metal symbols that in Chinese terms mean "mature man". Simply putting these on e-bay would move mountains." "The Feng Shui Diaries" shows how feng shui works for ordinary people in ordinary situations. There is nothing intimidating or inexplicable about it. And even if you don't follow the practice, they're a good laugh.
