At ten years old, the Heir of Jasad flees a massacre that takes her entire family. At fifteen, she buries her first body. At twenty, the clock is ticking on Sylvia's third attempt at home. Nizahl's armies have laid waste to Jasad and banned magic across the four remaining kingdoms. Fortunately, Sylvia's magic is as good at playing dead as she is. When the Nizahl Heir tracks a group of Jasadis to Sylvia's village, the quiet life she's crafted unravels. Calculating and cold, Arin's tactical brilliance is surpassed only by his hatred for magic. When a mistake exposes Sylvia's magic, Arin offers her an escape: compete as Nizahl's Champion in the Alcalah tournament and win immunity from persecution. In exchange, Arin will use her as bait to draw out the Jasadis he's hunting. To win the deadly Alcalah, Sylvia must work with Arin to free her trapped magic, all while staying a step ahead of his efforts to uncover her identity. But as the two grow closer, Sylvia realizes winning her freedom as Nizahl's Champion means destroying any chance of reuniting Jasad under her banner. The scorched kingdom is rising again, and Sylvia will have to choose between the life she's earned and the one she left behind.
Harper Lee remains a landmark figure in the American canon – thanks to
Scout, Jem, Atticus, and the other indelible characters in her
Pulitzer-winning debut, To Kill a Mockingbird; as well as for the
darker, late-’50s version of small-town Alabama that emerged in Go Set
a Watchman, her only other novel, published in 2015 after its
rediscovery. Less remembered, until now, however, is Harper Lee the
dogged young writer, who crafted stories in hopes of magazine
publication; Lee the lively New Yorker, Alabamian, and friend to Truman
Capote; and the Lee who peppered the pages of McCall’s and Vogue with
thoughtful essays in the latter part of the twentieth century.
In the far reaches of the night, the alarm was sounding. Some force was
holding him down. Where was Tejal? He felt with his arm. Her space was
empty. Around him the atmosphere was thick. Somebody was rising from
the bed, coughing out his lungs, shocked by the layers of tropical heat
and darkness. The room was hot and full and invisible.
WINNER OF THE 2015 PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR FICTION A beautiful, stunningly ambitious novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II 'Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever.' For Marie-Laure, blind since the age of six, the world is full of mazes. The miniature of a Paris neighbourhood, made by her father to teach her the way home. The microscopic layers within the invaluable diamond that her father guards in the Museum of Natural History. The walled city by the sea, where father and daughter take refuge when the Nazis invade Paris. And a future which draws her ever closer to Werner, a German orphan, destined to labour in the mines until a broken radio fills his life with possibility and brings him to the notice of the Hitler Youth. In this magnificent, deeply moving novel, the stories of Marie-Laure and Werner illuminate the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.
Growing up in 1940s Los Angeles, Gregory Reeves' outlook on life was always guided by two beliefs. The first: his fear of death was something to be conquered. The second: his father's radical religious doctrine, 'The Infinite Plan', was immutably true. But when he leaves the barrio where he spent his youth for Berkeley, San Francisco, both beliefs are called into question. Soon he has graduated from college, and finds himself in the thick of the Vietnam War. And when he returns, how can he possibly think of life and death in the same way? Following one man's journey through the twentieth century, The Infinite Plan asks: how much can the American reality shape one's pursuit of the American Dream? Originally published in 1991.

Having firmly established the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in the novels A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was retained by The Strand Magazine to contribute a series of twelve short stories, which began with 'A Scandal in Bohemia' in 1891 and were published monthly for the next year. The stories, in which the master sleuth receives a stream of clients presenting him with baffling and bizarre mysteries in his consulting room at 221B Baker Street, were instantly popular and by the time of the publication of the final story, 'The Copper Beeches', they had become the mainstay of the magazine. They included such classic tales as 'The Five Orange Pips' and 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band', and were gathered together in a collection known as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, representing some of the finest detective stories ever written.
