Britain is the undisputed home of the terrier. There are over
twenty breeds and although each one is a capable hunting dog, over
the centuries some breeds of terriers have proved themselves to be
more suited to rabbiting than others. The 'rabbiting terriers' have
many common characteristics and in this fascinating book the author
analyses these attributes in order to describe the height, weight,
shape, stamina and intelligence of the 'ideal' rabbiting terrier.
This study assesses the significance of the hunting cult as a major
element of the imperial experience in Africa and Asia. Through a
study of the game laws and the beginnings of conservation in the
19th and early-20th centuries, the author demonstrates the racial
inequalities which existed between Europeans and indigenous
hunters. Africans were denied access to game, and the development
of game reserves and national parks accelerated this process.
Indigenous hunters in Africa and India were turned into "poachers"
and only Europeans were permitted to hunt. In India, the hunting of
animals became the chief recreation of military officers and
civilian officials, a source of display and symbolic dominance of
the environment. Imperial hunting fed the natural history craze of
the day, and many hunters collected trophies and specimens for
private and public collections as well as contributing to hunting
literature. Adopting a radical approach to issues of conservation,
this book links the hunting cult in Africa and India to the
development of conservation, and consolidates widely-scattered
material on the importance of hunting to the economics and
nutrition of African societies. -- .

Scotland's stunning lochs are abundant in wild brown trout. The
fishing of wild brown trout has been the heritage of the common man
for generations. Out of this legacy has come the art form which we
call traditional, or simply 'loch style', fly fishing. In The Loch
Fisher's Bible, Stan Headley has succeeded in bringing this ancient
and venerable practice up to date, and in doing so has debunked and
demystified loch fishing in particular and fly fishing in general.
He has replaced myth, fable and fairy story with science,
technology and understanding. Now, armed with this unique book,
both novice and experienced fly fisher alike will have a far
greater understanding of fish behaviour and successful fishing
techniques.
Tanning is the science and art of turning perishable animal skins
into leather and furs. This age-old process can yield a luxurious
fur garment or an indispensable leather item, and no artificial
product to this day can replace or duplicate the properties of a
tanned hide.A hide is the outer tissue of an animal body made up on
once-living cells and their products. Tanning a skin involves
removing the tissues which cannot be converted into leather and the
treatment of the other tissues so they won't rot and will stay
flexible and strong. Advice on transforming skins into unique wall
decorations is also included, as are the how-to's of making gloves,
boots, moccasins, jackets and more. Interesting background
information adds to this comprehensive portrait of tanning. Facts
on animal skins - what they are made of and why they can be
preserved - precedes specific instructional sections, and a chapter
on pioneer tanning methods thoroughly examines the roots of this
art in Indian life. In these pages, Churchill gives you the means
to make the most of each 'catch', using tanning skills that can
equal those of professionals. Tanning also makes a satisfying craft
for beginners or accomplished tanners who would like to try working
with different types of animal skins or creating new products. This
is a complete guide of simple instructions you can refer to again
and again in preserving animal skins for years of future use and
enjoyment.

While most of us fly-fish to escape from daily life, for John Gierach and his friends fly-fishing IS a way of life. They are trout bums. But John Gierach is also an exceptional writer. The essays in Trout Bum are reflective, bitingly humorous and enormously wise in the ways of fishing and men. In vivid, unforgettable detail they recount the emotional, spiritual and tangible adventures and pleasures of stalking trout in and around the Rockies -- day in, day out, from season to season, with friends and alone. John Gierach's essays join the literary tradition of angling classics like The River Why, and A River Runs Through It.
