dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in

The Sunday Times bestseller Two comedy greats talk life, friendship
and the joys of fishing... Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse have
been friends for 30 years, but when life intervened, what was once
a joyous and spontaneous friendship dwindled to the odd phone call
or occasional catch up. Then, Glory Be! They were both diagnosed
with heart disease and realised that time is short. They'd better
spend it fishing... So they dusted off their kits, chucked on their
waders and ventured into the achingly beautiful British countryside
to fish, rediscover the joys of their friendship and ruminate on
some of life's most profound questions, such as: How did we get so
old? Where are all the fish? What are your favourite pocket meats?
What should we do if we find a corpse? Following the success of the
BBC's Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing series, this
wonderful book by two lifelong friends is a love letter to the joys
of angling, the thrill of the catch and the virtue of having a
right daft laff with your mates. On the fish, the equipment, the
food, and the locations, Gone Fishing is the perfect book for fans
of Bob Mortimer, Paul Whitehouse and for anyone who wants to read a
brilliantly written and endlessly funny joint memoir on life,
friendship and joys of fishing.
Whether standing in a quiet Wisconsin creek, by a high-country lake
in Wyoming, or on the grassy margins of England's hallowed
chalkstreams, Kevin Searock believes anglers are driven by a
vision: ""There are things on this good Earth that only the angler
sees, and one of them is the breathless beauty of a trout emerging
from a river."" Here, in this evocative collection of fishing
essays, he takes readers under the surface of this ancient sport,
casting a spell of water-magic. Although trout are central to many
of the stories, bluegills, bass, and other warm-water fish also
grace these pages. Telling stories in thoughtful prose, Searock
writes about fly-tying, collecting fishing literature, journaling,
and traveling in a way that makes Troutsmith a rich and varied
meditation on fishing and the outdoors.
An "excellent" (The New York Times) modern tribute to an ageless
pastime, and a practical guide to the art, philosophy, and rituals
of fly fishing, by an expert, lifelong angler. In The Optimist,
David Coggins makes a case for the skills and sensibility of an
enduring sport and shares the secrets, frustrations, and triumphs
of the great tradition of fly fishing, which has captivated anglers
worldwide. Written in wry, wise, and keenly observed prose, each
chapter focuses on a specific place, fish, and skill. Few
individuals, for example, have the visual acuity required to catch
the nearly invisible bonefish of the Bahamas flats. Or the patience
to land the elusive Atlantic salmon, "the fish of a thousand
casts," in eastern Canada. Pursuing these challenges, Coggins, "a
confirmed obsessive," travels to one fishing paradise after
another, including the great rivers of Patagonia, private chalk
streams in England, remote ponds in Maine, and New York City's
Jamaica Bay. In each setting, he chronicles his fortunes and
misfortunes with honesty and humor while meditating on how fishing
teaches focus, inner stillness, and a connection to the natural
world. Perfect for the novice, the enthusiastic amateur, and the
devoted angler alike, The Optimist offers a practical path to
enlightenment while providing "a rueful, thoughtful, and very funny
examination of an elegant obsession" (Jay McInerney).
Immerse yourself in the rich sights, sounds, and smells of big game
hunting in "Alaskan Sunrise to African Sunset," a rollicking tale
of one man's hunting adventures in the great outdoors. With
stunning detail and a flair for storytelling, Glenn T. Bingham
shares his thirty-year journey from his humble beginnings hunting
small game and deer in upstate New York to escapades throughout the
lower 48 states, Canada, Alaska, and Africa. Follow Bingham as he
hunts whitetails in the great white north, stalks mule deer in the
Rocky Mountains, climbs above the Arctic Circle for dall sheep, and
tracks cape buffalo into the tall grass of Zimbabwe. Along the way
he recreates the beauty of nature, lessons learned (sometimes the
hard way), and the satisfaction of success. Containing more than
fifty pictures, this engrossing account presents an exciting, often
humorous look at Bingham's experiences in some of the most remote
places on the planet. Experience the thrill of the hunt with
"Alaskan Sunrise to African Sunset"
It’s 2008 and the height of Zimbabwe’s economic demise. A group of passengers is huddled in a Toyota Quantum about to embark on a treacherous expedition to the City of Gold.
They have paid a high price for the dangerous passage to what they believe is a better life; an escape from the vicious vagaries of their present life in Bulawayo. In their minds, the streets of Johannesburg are paved with gold but they will have to dig deep to get close to any gold, dirtying themselves in the process. Told with brave honesty and bold description, the stories of the individual immigrants are simultaneously heart-breaking and heart-warming.
‘This book is a page-turning tale of struggle and triumph.’ – Sunday World
The idea of this book started with the listed rod and reel records
of the catch of Striped Bass of 60 pounds or more. Investigation
showed many of these men and women who caught these big bass have
passed on or can't be found and their stories lost. It became
obvious that a 60-pound plus Striped Bass caught by rod and reel
was a rare event. So rare that I could not find a 100 after looking
through all sought of outdoor media information. If so rare a catch
was registered, the story of the catch must be just as unique.
After interviewing many of these men and women, I realized that
each story contained the passion of its angler and the
determination of its foe, the Striped Bass. These rare stories
should be preserved; once lost, they will be gone forever. They
contain passions from real men and women who have spent countless
days, months or even years seeking this trophy.
