Science fiction is often considered a literature of futuristic technology: fantastic warfare among the stars, or ruinous apocalypse on Earth. In the middle of last century, a very different theme suddenly blossomed. This was a fiction of mind powers such as telepathy, precognition of the future, teleportation, symbolic machines reacting to these mental forces and perhaps life beyond death. Driving this explosion of paranormal narratives was John W. Campbell, editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, later renamed Analog. Almost single-handedly, Campbell made "psience fiction" into a dominant movement. Until now, no scholarly study has dealt specifically with this abrupt shift of emphasis away from space travel, atomic weapons, robots, and other once-imaginary technologies, and into the realm of the paranormal treated as science. Literary critic Damien Broderick surveys this long-ignored terrain, reading a series of influential or characteristic psience fiction novels and short stories, from the 1930s to now. This tour of the psychic fictional landscape is framed by an informed discussion of the dynamics creating this surge of interest in parapsychology, and its absorption into the genre even as real-world military experiments in the paranormal (the US Star Gate program) were being conducted in highly classified secrecy.

Handwriting is something of a dying art nowadays, as we tap messages to each other day after day. But handwriting analysis can divulge everything from a person's timidity to their ambition, from their desire to please to their need to control. In fact, so revealing is your writing that in Japan all CVs are still written by hand. Written by the UK's leading handwriting expert, Reading Between the Lines will show you how to judge someone's handwriting as a whole and how to examine it in detail. Because every aspect of penmanship - the height of an 'h', the curliness of a 'g', the pressure of the pen on the paper - is a collection of signals that we are giving out without meaning to. The way we write can tell the world a huge amount; sometimes more than the things we write about. Our handwriting exposes how we interact with the world and the people around us, and also how we cope with stress and express emotions. It can help us make choices for our future, showing us what our desires are, and even what jobs and partners may suit us best. Using real-life examples, including celebrity samples, you will be challenged to put your new-found knowledge to the test. By the end of the book you will have amassed a wealth of knowledge that will help you understand human nature - including your own - in all its colours.

In this updated edition of The Tarot Handbook, now with a new introduction by the author, Angeles Arrien takes tarot beyond the limits of the fortune-telling realm and shows us how this time-honored application is both a visual and symbolic map of consciousness, and a source of ancient wisdom. An exciting handbook for either a beginning or an ardent student of the tarot, it contains a multitude of charts, spreads, illustrations of the Thoth Deck, and other methodology tools for anyone looking for insights into personal and spiritual development. An anthropologist who specializes in cross-cultural myths, Arrien demonstrates how the seventy-eight figures of the tarot are portraitures and archetypes that are prevalent in the collective human experience. The author teaches us to use this realization to look beyond our cultural viewpoint or bias when we approach the tarot, and to rely instead on these more important universal principles, thereby deepening the quality and accuracy of our interpretations and expanding our awareness of the human psyche. A significant and classic piece of tarot literature, The Tarot Handbook is both a required manual for teachers and students of the subject, and an accessible and fascinating exploration of cultural anthropology.
Discover the magic and meaning in the mundane, with this oracle and guidebook filled with signs and symbols you could encounter walking down the street. The Universe is always communicating with us-through serendipity, coincidence, and chance-if we only knew how to listen. The Signs of the Times Oracle is a reminder that crystals and angelic guidance are just some of the ways the Universe speaks to us-other times the messages are right in front of us. Maybe you simply get a big red stop sign in your face or a plastic bag that says, "Have a Nice Day" blows past. The yield sign as you turn onto the highway or the peace sign spray-painted on the wall across the street might go unnoticed as you wait for whispers from angels or guidance from ancestors. Sometimes the messages from the Universe we miss are the most obvious ones. This oracle deck will open your eyes and your senses, so you'll become attuned to what the Universe is trying to tell you.
Toward the end of his notorious life as a radical among religious believers, Aleister Crowley developed a new tarot deck, which was published in 1944 as The Book of Thoth, named after the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom and magic spells. Crowley let all his magical knowledge flow into these cards. Since he was a highly educated, widely-traveled man and an extraordinarily well-versed authority of esoteric traditions, it is no wonder that this tarot deck fascinates us and has remained unsurpassed to this day in its symbolic content and complexity. Hajo Banzaf and Brigitte Theler provide basic background about the tarot and its use. They discuss various decks, setting the stage for an in-depth examination of Crowley's deck. They answer frequently asked questions about what you can and can't learn from the cards, how they work, how to give a reading, and how to deal with "predictions of disaster". They also offer eighteen different card spreads to address specific questions. The unique feature of this book is the cook-book section that describes every card in the deck. While many people know how to work with the symbolism of the Waite deck, most are not comfortable with the Crowley deck and find his book to difficult to understand. This easy-to-use reference provides a handy dictionary and overview so you can readily check card meanings and interpret the symbols for different occasions. Included are the number, glyph, astrological attribute, general meaning, what the card encourages, what it warns against, and how you can use it if you draw it as your "card for the day" or "card for the year". With so few books on the market that explain the Crowley tarot as clearly as this one does,Keywords for the Crowley Tarot is sure to become a classic in every tarot library!

From the author of "365 Tao" and a leading authority on Taoist practice and philosophy comes a completely innovative translation of the classic text of Eastern wisdom, the I Ching. The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is an ancient manual for divining the future. Its basic text is traditionally attributed to the Chinese King Wen, the Duke of Zhou, and the philosopher Confucius. By tossing coins, rolling dice, using a computer, or, more traditionally, counting yarrow stalks, one can create a seemingly random combination of heads or tails, odd or even, yin or yang, to construct six lines (for example, solid for odd numbers or broken for even numbers). These six lines make up a hexagram that provides advice, predictions, and answers to questions on topics from love and career to family and finance. While known mostly as a tool of divination, the I Ching is also a repository of centuries of wisdom. Most of the existing translations offer either dense, scholarly commentary or little more than fortune-cookie platitudes, but in "The Living I Ching" Deng Ming-Dao takes a more holistic approach. His new translation recovers the true wisdom and philosophy of this ancient classic, so that the I Ching becomes more than just a book of fortune-telling -- it becomes a manual for living.
