When two newlyweds discover that a corpse has been buried in the
basement of their new home, a gruelling case begins to trace the
identity of the victim. With all avenues of investigation
approaching exhaustion, a tenuous piece of evidence offers a chance
for Chief Inspector Moresby and leads him to the amateur sleuth
Roger Sheringham, who has recently been providing cover work in a
school south of London. Desperate for evidence of any kind on the
basement case, Moresby begins to sift through the manuscript of a
satirical novel Sheringham had been writing about his colleagues at
the school, convinced that amongst the colourful cast of teachers
hides the victim - and perhaps their murderer. A novel pairing dark
humour and intelligent detection work, this 1932 'whowasdunin?'
mystery is an example of a celebrated Golden Age author's most
inventive work.

Hearn's books." --Albert Einstein Lafcadio Hearn is the most
significant early interpreter of Japan and Japanese culture for the
West--a man who traveled to Japan when he was thirty-nine, and
never left. Lafcadio Hearn's Japan presents Hearn's most famous
stories and essays about his adopted land--recounting his love for
its striking natural beauty and the rich character and customs of
its people. The 18 fascinating essays in this book include: "In a

and serenity he experienced when visiting a traditional Zen garden
just outside his back door "Strangeness and Charm" Expressing his
deep love for the richness and beauty of traditional Japanese
culture "In the Cave of the Children's Ghosts" An account of a
journey to an isolated sea cave where the souls of dead children
are said to congregate Lafcadio Hearn's Japan provides an
unforgettable look at traditional Japan through the eyes of a
sensitive and eloquent foreigner. This new edition features a
foreword by Steve Kemme, a leading expert on Hearn and president of

A literary sensation from its first publication, The Master and
Margarita is considered a masterpiece of twentieth-century Russian
literature.
Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library, a series of stunning,
clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold-foiled edges and ribbon
markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any
book lover. This edition is translated by Diana Burgin and Katherine
Tiernan O’Connor, and features an introduction by Orlando Figes.
In Mikhail Bulgakov's imaginative extravaganza, Satan, disguised as a
magician, descends upon Moscow in the 1930s with his riotous band,
which includes a talking cat and an expert assassin. This visit has
several aims, one of which concerns the fate of the Master, an author
who has written a novel about Pontius Pilate and is now in a mental
hospital. By turns satiric, fantastic and ironically philosophical, The
Master and Margarita constantly surprises and entertains as the action
switches back and forth between twentieth-century Moscow and
first-century Jerusalem.

modern readers are still seduced by its symbolism and sensual
language.

The life of fifteenth-century heroine Joan of Arc is the stuff of
legend, and her cruel death (burnt at the stake aged just nineteen)
led to her being declared a martyr, granting her an impressive
legacy. Following her canonisation in 1920, and against a history
of overly romanticised retellings of the story, Bernard Shaw put
pen to paper to give a more accurate account, without resorting to
demonising her persecutors; as he writes in his preface, 'there are
no villains in the piece'. It was an immediate success, securing
him the Nobel Prize for Literature, although critics were initially
divided by this frank approach - T.S. Eliot was outraged, saying,
'instead of the saint or the strumpet of the legends... he has
turned her into a great middle-class reformer.' Nonetheless - or
perhaps even because of this controversy - Saint Joan is considered
one of Bernard Shaw's finest and most important plays. This edition
has an introduction by Simon Mundy, who has spent several years as
Vice-President of PEN International's Writers for Peace Committee,
and extensive explanatory notes.
In The Pickwick Papers we are introduced not just to one of the
greatest writers in the English language, but to some of fiction's
most endearing and memorable characters, starting with the
'illustrious, immortal and colossal-minded' Samuel Pickwick
himself. It is a rollicking tour de force through an England on the
brink of the Victorian era. Reform of government, justice and
commercial life are imminent, as are rail travel, social convulsion
and the death of deference, but Pickwick sails through on a tide of
delirious adventure, fortifying us for the future - whatever it
might throw at us. This Macmillan Collector's Library edition is
illustrated by H. K. Browne ('Phiz'), with an afterword by Ned
Halley. Designed to appeal to the book lover, the Macmillan
Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much
loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to
love and treasure.
Hester, the startlingly beautiful Native American who was rescued
as an infant by an Amish couple, now lives in downtown Lancaster,
Pennsylvania. She shares a house with Bappie King, another Amish
woman, living their independent lives in the fast-growing
mid-18th-century city. Bappie runs a highly successful stand at the
downtown farmers market; Hester is Bappie's assistant when she
isn't out in the city nursing desperately sick children and their
impoverished parents with her tinctures, teas, and rubs. And then
one day, Noah comes back; Noah, the first child born to Hans and
Kate Zug, the Amish couple who had welcomed Hester during their
childless years. Both Hester and Noah are refugees from this Amish
family gone awry. Both were victims of Hans' deep attraction to the
lovely Hester. Two hurt souls, they have each had their own adult
troubles. Noah left his family and the Amish to join the War.
Hester is the widow of William King, an Amish man who was
determined to possess his wife and dictate her life. When Noah
invites Hester to join him on a visit to their childhood home,
Hester can no longer ignore her buried anger at her adopted father
or her bitterness toward Annie, his second wife. Nor can Hester
deny the tempting thrill of spending time with the steady but
sensitive Noah, who since childhood showed special care for Hester.
Hester and Noah both know that the visit home will force them to
face blistering questions: Can they possibly forgive their ill
father, Hans, for his misplaced love for Hester and his utter
neglect of Noah? Can Hester and Noah risk marriage, especially if
they can't forgive Hans? Can Hester trust herself and Noah enough
to marry again after her failed marriage to William? Skyhorse
Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints,
are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested
in fiction novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers,
comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love
stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology,
literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and
much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York
Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to
books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors
whose work might not otherwise find a home.
'No Surrender' describes minor aristocrats and mill girls as they
struggle together as part of the suffrage movement.
With an Introduction and Notes by Professor Roger Cardinal.
University of Kent at Canterbury. Translationsare by Paul Desages
(Around the World in Eighty Days) and Arthur Chambers (Five Weeks
in a Balloon). JULES VERNE (1828-1905) POSSESSED that rare
storyteller's gift of being able to present the far-fetched and the
downright unbelievable in such a way as effortlessly to inspire his
reader's allegiance and trust. This volume contains two of his
best-loved yarns, chosen from among the sixty-four titles of Les
Voyages Extraordinaires, Verne's pioneering contribution to the
canon of modern science fiction. Around the World in Eighty Days
(1873) relates the hair-raising journey made as a wager by the
Victorian gentleman Phileas Fogg, who succeeds - but only just! -
in circling the globe within eighty days. The dour Fogg's obsession
with his timetable is complemented by the dynamism and versatility
of his French manservant, Passepartout, whose talent for getting
into scrapes brings colour and suspense to the race against time.
Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863) was Verne's first novel. It
documents an apocryphal jaunt across the continent of Africa in a
hydrogen balloon designed by the omniscient, imperturbable and ever
capable Dr Fergusson, the prototype of the Vernian adventurer.
From the bestselling author of "Pride, Prejudice, and Cheese Grits"
comes a new and comical contemporary take on the perennial Jane
Austen classic, "Emma."
Caroline Ashley is a journalist on the rise at "The Washington
Post" until the sudden death of her father brings her back to
Thorny Hollow to care for her mentally fragile mother and their
aging antebellum home. The only respite from the eternal rotation
of bridge club meetings and garden parties is her longtime friend,
Brooks Elliott. A professor of journalism, Brooks is the voice of
sanity and reason in the land of pink lemonade and triple layer
coconut cakes. But when she meets a fascinating, charismatic young
man on the cusp of a brand new industry, she ignores Brooks's
misgivings and throws herself into the project.
Brooks struggles to reconcile his parents' very bitter marriage
with his father's devastating grief at the recent loss of his wife.
Caroline is the only bright spot in the emotional wreckage of his
family life. She's a friend and he's perfectly happy to keep her
safely in that category. Marriage isn't for men like Brooks and
they both know it... until a handsome newcomer wins her heart.
Brooks discovers Caroline is much more than a friend, and always
has been, but is it too late to win her back?
Featuring a colorful cast of southern belles, Civil War
re-enactors, and good Christian women with spunk to spare, "Emma,
Mr. Knightley, and Chili-Slaw Dogs" brings the modern American
South to light in a way only a contemporary Jane Austen could have
imagined.
Hans Giebernath lives among the dull and respectable townsfolk of a sleepy Black Forest village. When he is discovered to be an exceptionally gifted student, the entire community presses him onto a path of serious scholarship. Hans dutifully follows the regimen of study and endless examinations, his success rewarded only with more crushing assignments. When Hans befriends a rebellious young poet, he begins to imagine other possibilities outside the narrowly circumscribed world of the academy. Finally sent home after a nervous breakdown, Hans is revived by nature and romance, and vows never to return to the gray conformity of the academic system.
