A New York Times Bestseller A Washington Post Bestseller A Los
Angeles Times Bestseller Named a "Best Essay Collection of the
Decade" by Literary Hub A Book Riot "Favorite Summer Read of 2020"
A Food Tank Fall 2020 Reading Recommendation Updated with a new
introduction from Robin Wall Kimmerer, the special edition of
Braiding Sweetgrass, reissued in honor of the fortieth anniversary
of Milkweed Editions, celebrates the book as an object of meaning
that will last the ages. Beautifully bound with a new cover
featuring an engraving by Tony Drehfal, this edition includes a
bookmark ribbon and five brilliantly colored illustrations by
artist Nate Christopherson. In increasingly dark times, we honor
the experience that more than 350,000 readers in North America have
cherished about the book--gentle, simple, tactile, beautiful, even
sacred--and offer an edition that will inspire readers to gift it
again and again, spreading the word about scientific knowledge,
indigenous wisdom, and the teachings of plants. As a botanist,
Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature
with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi
Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our
oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two
lenses of knowledge together to take us on "a journey that is every
bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical,
as clever as it is wise" (Elizabeth Gilbert). Drawing on her life
as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how
other living beings--asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash,
salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass--offer us gifts and lessons,
even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections
that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that
threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central
argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires
the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship
with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the
languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the
generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

A book about creativity for anyone who's ever looked at a blank
sheet of paper and felt bad. Like you, syndicated cartoonist Dana
Maier wants a creativity shortcut-a magical fairy who will both
come up with brilliant ideas and grant the energy and discipline to
churn them out. This book is not that magical shortcut-you won't
find stirring literary quotes or a foolproof system for sparking
inspiration here-but it does provide commiseration, jokes, and
comics about the often-painful act of creating something. Skip to
the Fun Parts is a book for those of us who ever wanted a shortcut
to being creative and realized, sadly, that there was none, but
decided to give it a try anyway.
Louisiana Coushatta Basket Makers brings together oral histories,
tribal records, archival materials, and archaeological evidence to
explore the fascinating history of the Coushatta Tribe's famed
basket weavers. After settling at their present location near the
town of Elton, Louisiana, in the 1880s, the Coushatta (Koasati)
tribe developed a basket industry that bolstered the local tribal
economy and became the basis for generating tourism and political
mobilization. The baskets represented a material culture that
distinguished the Coushattas as Indigenous people within an
ethnically and racially diverse region. Tribal leaders serving as
diplomats also used baskets as strategic gifts as they built
political and economic allegiances throughout the twentieth
century, thereby securing the Coushattas' future. Behind all these
efforts were the basket makers themselves. Although a few Coushatta
men assisted in the production of baskets, it was mostly women who
put in the long hours to gather and process the materials, then
skillfully stitch them together to produce treasures of all shapes
and sizes. The art of basket making exists within a broader
framework of Coushatta traditional teachings and educational
practices that have persisted to the present. As they tell the
story of Coushatta basket makers, Linda P. Langley and Denise E.
Bates provide a better understanding of the tribe's culture and
values. The weavers' own ""language of baskets"" shapes this
narrative, which depicts how the tribe survived repeated hardships
as weavers responded on their own terms to market demands. The work
of Coushatta basket makers represents the perseverance of
traditional knowledge in the form of unique and carefully crafted
fine art that continues to garner greater recognition and
appreciation with every successive generation.

Flint knapping, which is the shaping of flint or other fracturing
stone to manufacture tools, was one of the primary skills used for
survival by our prehistoric ancestors. Early mankind once made and
used these implements on a daily basis to hunt, prepare food and
clothing, to farm, make shelters, and perform all the other tasks
required for Stone Age existence. A material that has been with us
since earliest times, flint still plays a part in our lives today:
it is used in cigarette, gas and barbeque lighters; in some parts
of Britain it is a major building material; and many of our beaches
have shingle which is just flint by another name. In this
informative and original guide, expert Robert Turner explains how
flint was used, what tools were made and what they were made for,
and provides detailed instruction of how to make them, enabling the
reader to replicate their own Stone Age toolkit. Illustrated
throughout, Flint Knapping is a journey of archaeological discovery
through the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

Welcome to the wonderful world of painting with gouache, with the
creative guidance of popular artist and illustrator Zoe Ingram. In
this comprehensive beginner's guide, Zoe shares everything she
possibly can about getting started with gouache painting. Why
gouache? Because this exciting paint medium creates opaque effects
making it more vibrant and graphic than traditional watercolours,
meaning you can layer it, paint on dark backgrounds and much more.
Gouache is one of the easiest of paint mediums to use. It's very
forgiving and fun to use and is also versatile. Gouache paint can
mimic watercolour and can give the opacity of oil paint if used
with less water. You can use it to paint large, smooth, flat blocks
of background colour and the finest lines and details. Gouache
paint also dries quickly too, which is a big bonus! Starting at the
very start, Zoe takes you through the basics and explains what
tools and materials you'll need, then explores a wide range of
techniques and finally, there are a host of fun and vibrant
step-by-step projects that you can follow along with or use as a
springboard for your own ideas. Zoe Ingram's distinctive art makes
this book a visual treat, as she shows you how she paints a variety
of subjects, from birds and bugs, to flowers and foliage, to
abstract collages, hand lettering and patterns. Along the way
you'll learn about colour theory, colour mixing, sketching, washes,
mark making, line work, overlaying, working on dark backgrounds,
how to get crisp edges, how to add details, different approaches to
collage and even how to digitise your work so that you can create
repeat patterns and custom prints. In the projects section you can
follow along step-by-step as Zoe paints a very handsome pheasant, a
funky beetle pattern, a trendy houseplant, colourful caterpillars,
bright butterflies, jumbled geometric patterns, a striking owl,
pretty florals, creative lettering, a curious cat and a free-flow
abstract floral piece - after which there will be no stopping you!
Beautifully illustrated, expertly explained and a riot of colour,
this book will kickstart your love affair with gouache, so all
that's left is deciding how to pronounce it...
"gooash"..."gwash"..."goo-uhsh"?!
