R301 Discovery Miles 3 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Dales Way is a 79 mile (127km) long distance trail in the north of England, running between Ilkley, in North Yorkshire and Bowness-on-Windermere, in Cumbria. Much of the route passes through the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks. Starting out in Ilkley, the route runs along Wharfedale, passing the impressive ruins of Bolton Priory and the attractive market town of Grassington. It continues along the River Wharfe through dramatic limestone scenery before it crosses The Pennines to reach Dentdale and Sedbergh. It then skirts the Howgill Fells and crosses the M6 motorway to finish overlooking Lake Windermere. This map-guide is laid out for walkers travelling from Ilkley to Bowness, although walkers travelling in the opposite direction should find it equally useful. Each panel includes a detailed route map, route profile and helpful notes on navigation. There are link routes from Bradford, Leeds and Harrogate to the start of the route at Ilkley.

The Interoceanic Highway is many things to many people: an emblematic project during a period focused on integration, a dream realized for an isolated region, a symbol of the profound fragility of state institutions, a key cause of political corruption, and a major driver of ecological and cultural devastation. This highway links the Andean highlands with the Amazonian lowlands in southern Peru, offering an outlet for Brazil’s emergent economy. While it finally brought an end to the isolation of Madre de Dios and other parts of southern Peru and the western Amazon, it was made possible by political corruption revealed in the Lava Jato scandal, and it permitted the spread of criminal business activities. But the Interoceanic Highway’s deeper history must be appreciated in order to fully understand why it was built and the impacts it has generated. The Road to the Land of the Mother of God explores more than five hundred years of the history of Peru’s Interoceanic Highway, showing how the purposes, portrayals, and importance of roads change fundamentally over time, and thus how roads bring significantly more impacts and costs than their advocates and critics generally anticipate. By taking a deeper look at infrastructure history, Stephen G. Perz and Jorge Luis Castillo Hurtado portray infrastructure as an integrative optic for understanding changes in local livelihoods, regional development, and social conflicts.

Whether you're a war correspondent or an aid worker, a tourist worried about an increasingly hostile world or an armchair traveler concerned that your own backyard is fast becoming a war zone, "How to Avoid Being Killed in a War Zone" will help you survive some of the world's most volatile environments.

Well-traveled journalist Rosie Garthwaite offers practical advice drawn from her own personal experience and that of others, including many seasoned colleagues, who have worked in some of the world's most hostile regions. Topics covered include everything from avoiding land mines and hostage situations to amputating a limb and foraging for safe food. The book is a true survival manual (all medical advice has been vetted by doctors from Doctors Without Borders), but it is also a transporting read, filled with vicarious thrills and written with brio and humor by a woman who has seen it all. Perfect for those planning short trips or extended stays in dangerous destinations, or-much like the popular Worst-Case Scenario handbooks-for readers who simply prefer to be thoroughly prepared, wherever life may take them.

Rosie Garthwaite began her journalistic career as a freelance reporter in Basra, Iraq, just after graduating from college, and learned about survival in dangerous regions firsthand. She wrote this book to answer some of the questions her colleagues seemed to face daily in the field. Garthwaite works as a television journalist in the Middle East and is based in Doha, Qatar. This is her first book. ]

Walking the High Desert - Encounters with Rural America along the Oregon Desert Trail (Paperback): Ellen Waterston Walking the High Desert - Encounters with Rural America along the Oregon Desert Trail (Paperback)
Ellen Waterston
R609 Discovery Miles 6 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Former high desert rancher Ellen Waterston writes of a wild, essentially roadless, starkly beautiful part of the American West. Following the recently created 750-mile Oregon Desert Trail, she embarks on a creative and inquisitive exploration, introducing readers to a “trusting, naĂ¯ve, earnest, stubbly, grumpy old man of a desert†that is grappling with issues at the forefront of national, if not global, concern: public land use, grazing rights for livestock, protection of sacred Indigenous ground, water rights, and protection of habitat for endangered species. Blending travel writing with memoir and history, Waterston profiles a wide range of people who call the high desert home and offers fresh perspectives on nationally reported regional conflicts such as the Malheur Wildlife Refuge occupation. Walking the High Desert invites readers—wherever they may be—to consider their own beliefs, identities, and surroundings through the optic of the high desert of southeastern Oregon.
