Tower Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world.
Designed by Sir Horace Jones (1819–1887) and engineer Sir John
Wolfe Barry (1836–1918) over a period of eight years, it was the
largest and most advanced bascule bridge ever completed when it
opened in 1894, requiring 11,000 tons of steel and involving more
than 400 construction workers. This impressive feat of engineering
helped sustain the growing commercial activity at the docks and
warehouses in East London, and the sudden influx of daily commuters
brought in from the newly built London Bridge station. Still in
full use today, the bridge is lifted an average of 850 times a
year. This Victorian masterpiece remains a highly important
crossing on the River Thames, as well as being one of London’s
defining landmarks. This compelling album of photographs by Harry
Cory Wright allows us to experience the awe-inspiring structure of
Tower Bridge in exquisite detail, from the intricate machinery and
original mechanisms inside the control rooms and secret corridors,
to the great cavernous space within the bascule chamber. It
includes an interview with Senior Technical Officer Glen Ellis, who
shares his own daily experience of lifting the bridge, evoking an
incredibly vivid sense of ‘being there’.
(Re)discover Art Nouveau at the heart of Brussels. At the end of
the 19th century, the anti-academic movement pushed Brussels'
architects towards Art Nouveau. Both Victor Horta, in an organic
style, and Paul Hankar, in a more geometrical tendency, created an
architecture that quickly gained an international reputation. In a
little more than a decade, from 1893 on, hundreds of Art
Nouveau-fashioned buildings appeared in Brussels, elaborated first
by the great pioneers and later by their students and imitators who
are also influenced by the Vienna Secession and other trends of
European Art Nouveau. At first, this style fulfilled industrial
bourgeoisie's dreams, yearning to assert itself in the city's
structure through this new, and sometimes exuberant, architecture.
This book offers nine walks to discover - in different districts -
the multiple aspects of architectural Art Nouveau in Brussels.
Witness the personal style of the most important architects as well
as decorative methods such as sgraffito. Through interviews with
owners, custodians and restorers of Art Nouveau-styled buildings,
Brussels Art Nouveau describes the fundamental guardians of this
remarkable heritage.

Marseille, France's sunny second city, is a beguiling place. A
major Mediterranean port, it beckons to urban wanderers and anyone
enthralled by cities in all their multiplicity. Marseille's ancient
streets tell stories of fires, plagues, wars, decay, and regrowth.
Waves of people of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds have
made their way there, and many have found homes for themselves.
Although the city hosts visitors from around the world, France's
social and political fault lines are on full display. For all its
charm, Marseille struggles to overcome its reputation for
corruption and crime. William Kornblum-an eminent urban sociologist
and a veteran traveler in the Francophone world-invites readers on
an exploration of a changing city. Blending travelogue and social
observation, he roams Marseille's neighborhoods and regions in the
company of writers, scholars, activists, and ordinary people. The
living history of the city comes through in Kornblum's character
sketches and the stories that his guides tell. Relishing
Marseille's coasts and crags and reveling in its rich maritime
culture, they discuss the political, social, and environmental
challenges the city faces. Kornblum also draws connections with his
hometown, New York City, which like Marseille is a deindustrialized
port city increasingly dependent on the production and consumption
of culture. Offering a captivating and thoughtful portrait of the
city and its citizens, this book is for all readers who have ever
wondered what makes Marseille so distinctive.

and clich s, has one of the richest cultural heritages in Italy.
Whether on the Amalfi Coast, at Pompeii, in the Cilento, at
Benevento, or Caserta, or just in the area around Naples, its
hidden treasures are revealed only to locals and to travellers who
know how to leave the beaten path far behind. An indispensable

Tenerife is a remarkable island, dominated by Mount Teide, an
active volcano higher than any mountain in mainland Spain. The
island has extraordinary volcanic landscapes, and thousands of
species of plants and animals that are found only there. The
authors' love of Tenerife stems from its enormous variety of
habitats with their complex plant and animal communities. They have
explored the island from the laurel forests of eastern Anaga to the
cliffs of Los Gigantes in Teno, from the semi-deserts of the
extreme south to the richly vegetated slopes along the north coast,
and from remote black sand beaches to the lavas of Las Canadas and
the craters of Teide and Pico Viejo. Local Spanish experts have
guided them to remote places and have contributed accounts of their
own special interests. most studied of all volcanoes.
