A visual historical tour through all the great tourist locations of
Rome, with vintage images paired with their modern-day equivalent
in this compelling bilingual edition. Rome is ‘the eternal
city’ and was a stopping-off place on the Grand Tour long before
the days of photography. Despite the preservation of so many
classic ruins across the city, there has been significant change.
Over hundreds of years of flooding, the river Tiber deposited silt
across the Forum and low-lying sites. Many archive images show a
completely different ground level to the 21st century view, after
excavation revealed their true height. When Mussoilini came to the
power in 1922 he set about creating wider avenues and removing some
of the older buildings, as can been from the changes to via della
Conciliazione. Rome Then and Now visits all the major tourist
locations in the city and shows pictures of how they once were,
sometimes unfenced with goats grazing amongst the ruins! Sites
include: St Peter's Square, Colosseum, Pantheon, Spanish Steps,
Piazza del Popolo, the Forum, Trajan's Column, Trevi Fountain, Arch
of Titus, Arch of Conatantine, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona,
Quirinal Palace, Vittoriano, Tarpeian Hill, Palatine Hill, Circus
Maximus.

The Interoceanic Highway is many things to many people: an
emblematic project during a period focused on integration, a dream
realized for an isolated region, a symbol of the profound fragility
of state institutions, a key cause of political corruption, and a
major driver of ecological and cultural devastation. This highway
links the Andean highlands with the Amazonian lowlands in southern
Peru, offering an outlet for Brazil’s emergent economy. While it
finally brought an end to the isolation of Madre de Dios and other
parts of southern Peru and the western Amazon, it was made possible
by political corruption revealed in the Lava Jato scandal, and it
permitted the spread of criminal business activities. But the
Interoceanic Highway’s deeper history must be appreciated in
order to fully understand why it was built and the impacts it has
generated. The Road to the Land of the Mother of God explores more
than five hundred years of the history of Peru’s Interoceanic
Highway, showing how the purposes, portrayals, and importance of
roads change fundamentally over time, and thus how roads bring
significantly more impacts and costs than their advocates and
critics generally anticipate. By taking a deeper look at
infrastructure history, Stephen G. Perz and Jorge Luis Castillo
Hurtado portray infrastructure as an integrative optic for
understanding changes in local livelihoods, regional development,
and social conflicts.
From the elegance of the grand salons of Prideaux Place, Padstow's most stately of homes, to the wild and remote Cornish coastline, Rosamunde Pilcher captured in her novels Cornwall's unique, diverse beauty and compelling charm.
Rosamunde Pilcher grew up near St Ives, publishing her first novel at the age of 25. Cornwall remained her long-standing inspiration with most of her novels set in this wonderfully diverse landscape. Her most famous novel, 'The Shell Seekers', catapulted Rosamunde to international fame and created a dedicated fan-base.
This new Pitkin guidebook takes the reader on a tour of the key areas and places that inspired Pilcher's creative writing. Clamber down the steep Bedruthan Steps and enjoy the traditional Cornish welcome in the beautiful harbour town of St Ives. St Michael's Mount, one of the most famous sights in Cornwall, sits majestically off shore while the sound of the waves battering the coastline is a key element in enjoying a visit to Land's End. These sites and many more informed Rosamunde Pilcher's writing, making her novels and short stories some of the most popular and cherished around the world, several of which have been adapted for television.
