The Geography of Southeast Asia - A Scholarly Bibliography and Guide (Paperback): Thomas A Rumney The Geography of Southeast Asia - A Scholarly Bibliography and Guide (Paperback)
Thomas A Rumney
R2,097 Discovery Miles 20 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In The Geography of Southeast Asia, Rumney discusses an area that has long been of interest to geographers and other academics. As interest in Southeast Asia has grown, particularly over the past forty years, the volume and variety of scholarly publications on the varied geographical aspects of the region have also increased. This collection is an attempt to identify, organize, and present as many of these works as possible. The region as a whole, and each individual country of the area, are covered in individual chapters. Each chapter is further systematically organized by topic, including general works, cultural-social geography, economic geography, historical geography, physical geography, political geography, and urban geography. This book presents a myriad of sources, such as atlases, books, chapters, articles, dissertations, and theses are included, as well as works written in English, French, German, and other languages, providing the reader with a thorough view of Southeast Asian geography.

Tom Vanhaaren; Foreword by Brian Griese
R571 Discovery Miles 5 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why did Desmond Howard spurn Nick Saban to play in Ann Arbor? How did Michigan really find All-American offensive lineman Reggie McKenzie? What did Bo Schembechler do that surprised Mark Messner and his family? And why was Tom Brady recruited so late in the process? The Road to Ann Arbor reveals how many Wolverines greats became just that. ESPN's Tom VanHaaren takes fans back to the start and behind the scenes of the college recruiting process, showing that the path to The Big House is not always straight and narrow.

Brussels, Art,Nouveau
R757 R628 Discovery Miles 6 280 Save R129 (17%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

(Re)discover Art Nouveau at the heart of Brussels. At the end of the 19th century, the anti-academic movement pushed Brussels' architects towards Art Nouveau. Both Victor Horta, in an organic style, and Paul Hankar, in a more geometrical tendency, created an architecture that quickly gained an international reputation. In a little more than a decade, from 1893 on, hundreds of Art Nouveau-fashioned buildings appeared in Brussels, elaborated first by the great pioneers and later by their students and imitators who are also influenced by the Vienna Secession and other trends of European Art Nouveau. At first, this style fulfilled industrial bourgeoisie's dreams, yearning to assert itself in the city's structure through this new, and sometimes exuberant, architecture. This book offers nine walks to discover - in different districts - the multiple aspects of architectural Art Nouveau in Brussels. Witness the personal style of the most important architects as well as decorative methods such as sgraffito. Through interviews with owners, custodians and restorers of Art Nouveau-styled buildings, Brussels Art Nouveau describes the fundamental guardians of this remarkable heritage.

My Omaha Obsession - Searching for the City (Paperback): Miss Cassette My Omaha Obsession - Searching for the City (Paperback)

2021 Nebraska Book Award My Omaha Obsession takes the reader on an idiosyncratic tour through some of Omaha's neighborhoods, buildings, architecture, and people, celebrating the city's unusual history. Rather than covering the city's best-known sites, Miss Cassette is irresistibly drawn to strange little buildings and glorious large homes that don't exist anymore as well as to stories of Harkert's Holsum Hamburgers and the Twenties Club. Piecing together the records of buildings and homes and everything interesting that came after, Miss Cassette shares her observations of the property and its significance to Omaha. She scrutinizes land deeds, insurance maps, tax records, and old newspaper articles to uncover a property's singular story. Through conversations with fellow detectives and history enthusiasts, she guides readers along her path of hunches, personal interests, mishaps, and more. As a longtime resident of Omaha, Miss Cassette is informed by memories of her youth combined with an enduring curiosity about the city's offbeat relics and remains. Part memoir and part research guide with a healthy dose of colorful wandering, My Omaha Obsession celebrates the historic built environment and searches for the people who shaped early Omaha.

A critical study of the life of art criticism in the 1970s, this book traces the evolution of art and art criticism in a pivotal period in post-war British history. The book explores how art critics and the art press attempted to negotiate new developments in art, faced with the challenges of conceptualism, alternative media, new social movements and radical innovations in philosophy and theory. This is the first comprehensive study of the art press and art criticism in Britain during this pivotal period, seen through the lens of its art press, charting the arguments and ideas that would come to shape contemporary art as we know it today.

Washington DC is more than a pretty face; it is a Southern city on the edge of the industrial North; it is a company town, where politics, as combat or spectator sport, is always the subject; it is a city of transplants and transients drawn from around the world, yet remains unexpectedly provincial. The major tourist attractions are well-known; you will need little help in that department. But a cup of coffee, a bit of shopping, a cocktail and a good feed will pep you up in between museums and monuments. Here are 33 choice suggestions to help get the most from your visit to the District of Columbia.

Unpacked offers a critical, novel perspective on the Caribbean's now taken-for-granted desirability as a tourist's paradise. Dreams of a tropical vacation have become a quintessential aspect of the modern Caribbean, as millions of tourists travel to the region and spend extravagantly to pursue vacation fantasies. At the beginning of the twentieth century, however, travelers from North America and Europe thought of the Caribbean as diseased, dangerous, and, according to many observers, "the white man's graveyard." How then did a trip to the Caribbean become a supposedly fun and safe experience? Unpacked examines the historical roots of the region's tourism industry by following a well-traveled sea route linking the US East Coast with the island of Cuba and the Isthmus of Panama. Blake C. Scott describes how the cultural and material history of US imperialism became the heart of modern Caribbean tourism. In addition, he explores how advances in tropical medicine, perceptions of the tropical environment, and development of infrastructure and transportation networks opened a new playground for visitors.

With its easy access, and ten hours target time, the Surrey 3 Peaks Challenge can be completed in a single (long) day if you are within commuting distance of Dorking. The Surrey Hills is an 'Area of Outstanding National Beauty'. It is difficult to think of anywhere more picturesque in which to undertake a walking Challenge. With all this natural beauty to hand do not forget that this is a Challenge, requiring a good level of fitness, good navigation, suitable clothing and footwear, along with refreshments and water to consume during our Challenge adventure. If you are new to Challenge walks you might consider our Rutland Water Challenge a first step in your long distance walking before tackling the Surrey 3 Peaks. Surrey 3 Peaks Challenge Map and Guide is a 25k scale OSlike map with the Challenge route specially highlighted. We licence OS 50k scale mapping which is then doubled in size to produce an OSlike 25k map but the features, text and logos are now doubled in size making them much easier to read under Challenge conditions. Our preferred Challenge Route, and two slightly different alternatives, are added and specially highlighted so that our route stands out against the OSlike 25k map. Gps track and waypoints for the three routes are available to download as gpx files in a zip file. The 50 waypoints of our Challenge route are highlighted on the map. These gpx files can be used with all gps phone apps and gps units. A digital Custom Map edition of our Surrey 3 Peaks map is available as a free download for use by Garmin users. On the reverse of the map sheet is our Locator Map using OS Opendata showing the location of, and access to, Surrey 3 Peaks relative to a wide area of southern England. The result is a double sided 600mm by 600mm map design. We then print the map design on a 100 micron plastic substrate using a special UV curing inks process on the UK's only press capable of using this latest technology. The result is a lightweight map that is both waterproof and tearproof, and fully recyclable, that will survive anything your Surrey 3 Peaks Challenge can throw at it and afterwards will fold up like new.

Rome - A Sketchbook (Hardcover): Matthew Rice Rome - A Sketchbook (Hardcover)

R614 R546 Discovery Miles 5 460 Save R68 (11%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A guide to the glories of Rome, conveyed by means of an artist's sketchbook Matthew Rice is a long-time observer and illustrator of cities, buildings and all those who inhabit them, with an uncanny ability to express the energy of a place through a few lines of ink and splashes of paint. In the first book in this new sketchbook series, he explored the glittering canals of Venice: now he turns his attention to Rome, the Eternal City. Rome is a place where the ancient, the baroque and the modern clash, and this tension runs through Matthew's paintings. In this guide, he makes sly juxtapositions of people and animals against the backdrop of the city's architectural and artistic wonders, its ruins and its ristoranti. Matthew's ability to notice detail, his sense of light and dark, his expert's knowledge of architecture and how it creates an atmosphere allows him to present Rome, in these pages, in its all its living, breathing splendour. Following the same landscape format as Matthew's real-life sketchbooks, Rome: A Sketchbook will combine enchanting watercolour illustrations with an informed, personal and witty text, and promises to delight all visitors to Rome, armchair or actual.
