The IATBR conference proceedings series has a history of over 30
years and is widely read by researchers, practitioners and graduate
students in the field of transportation and urban planning in
general, and in travel behaviour analysis in particular. It is the
only series of conference proceedings that comprehensively reviews,
synthesizes, and identifies research needs and future research
directions for the respective sub areas of the travel behaviour
research field and presents up-to-date, state-of-the-art
assessments by distinguished authors. This volume of the 11th
International Conference on Travel Behaviour Research, held in
Kyoto, Japan, in August 2006, examines key issues and emerging
trends in the expanding field of travel behaviour. These
proceedings contain: the keynote speeches of Professor John Urry of
Lancaster University (sociology) and Professor Masahisa Fujita of
(then) Kyoto University (economics); workshop resource papers by
distinguished authors in nine subject areas; synthesis papers (with
a focus on Asian developments); and 16 research papers selected
from presentation sessions. All papers, including the workshop
reports, were reviewed by at least two referees.

Shelter, fire and water are the three keys to survival and
maintaining your "core temperature control" (CTC). This
indispensable guide shows how to create and use each of these
elements most effectively and economically, while keeping the next
stage or steps clearly in focus, a forgotten -- yet critical --
component of many scenarios. Co-authored by noted survival expert
and woodsman Dave Canterbury, this is one of a 10-part series on
survival skills.
The medieval city of Ypres will forever be associated with the
Great War, especially by the British. From 1914 to 1918 it was the
key strongpoint in the northern sector of the Western Front, and
the epic story of its defence has taken on almost legendary status.
The city and the surrounding battlefields are also among the most
visited sites on the Western Front, and Paul Reed's walking guide
is an essential travelling companion for anyone who is eager to
explore them either on foot, by bike or by car. His classic book,
first published as Walking the Salient over ten years ago, is the
result of a lifetime's research into the battles for Ypres and the
Flemish landscape over which they were fought. He guides the walker
to all the key locations - Ypres itself, Yser, Sanctuary Wood,
Bellewaarde Ridge, Zillebeke, Hill 60, Passchendaele, Messines,
Kemmel and Ploegsteert are all covered. There are walks to notable
sites behind the lines, around Poperinghe, Vlamertinghe and
Brandhoek. And, for this second edition which he has revised,
updated and expanded, he has provided new photographs and included
two entirely new walks covering the Langemarck and Potijze
areas.Walking Ypres brings the visitor not only to the places where
the armies clashed but to the landscape of monuments, cemeteries
and villages that make the Ypres battlefields among the most
memorable sites of the Great War.

The full autobiography of one of the world's most well known
adventurers. Heinrich Harrer, traveller, explorer and mountaineer
led one of the most extraordinary lives of the twentieth century.
He famously spent Seven Years in Tibet (published in 1953 and made
into the film starring Brad Pitt in 1997) and was tutor, mentor and
a lifelong friend of the Dalai Lama. He made the first ascent of
the notorious North Face of the Eiger (told in his book The White
Spider) and summited unclimbed peaks in Alaska, the Himalaya and
South America. In this dramatic autobiography he brings to life all
of his adventures, from growing up in a small mountain village in
Carinthia, to the early days of climbing in the Alps, his success
on the Eiger in 1938, through his time in Tibet, to his later
expeditions. Looking back in his 90's on a long life full of
adventures, Harrer candidly recounts his meeting with Adolf Hitler
and his flirtation with the Nazi regime in the late 1930's. He
reviews his time in Tibet and reveals many never before disclosed
details. He chronicles his later expeditions that include the first
ascent of Carstenz Pyramid in New Guinea, exploration of the Amazon
with King Leopold III of Belgium and ethnological research and
travels to remote parts of Asia, South America and Africa. This
book brings to life his incredible life, much of which is little
known outside his standout achievements.

souvenirs from the Guadalquivir steamboats, Masonic symbols in a

Written by Arctic expert Polly Evans, this new, thoroughly updated
fourth edition of Bradt's Northern Lights: a Practical Travel Guide
does what it says on the tin, providing practical guidance to the
best places to view the natural phenomenon also known as the aurora
borealis. Designed for the many people who dream of witnessing this
spectacle, it remains the only guidebook to provide detailed
treatment of optimum locations across North America (Canada,
Alaska), Greenland and Europe (Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland)
while also covering practicalities, with this edition providing
greater detail on a wider range of accommodation options, from
budget hotels to Sweden's spectacular ICEHOTEL, built each year
from river water before melting in spring. The northern lights -
arguably the greatest light show you'll ever see - are a major,
increasingly popular tourist draw of the Arctic and sub-Arctic
winter. The experience is also increasingly popular: in the decade
to 2016, winter tourism to northern Norway increased by 378%. As
well as advice on the best places to see auroras, this guide offers
a succinct, easy-to-understand explanation of the science behind
the northern lights, and provides information on tour operators
offering northern lights packages, up-to-date guidance on
photographing the aurora in the light of technological
improvements, alongside practical tips including what to wear, how
to drive in winter conditions and how to understand northern lights
forecasting. The guide is further enriched by suggestions for
complementary daytime activities such as dog sledging, skiing,
snowshoeing, snowmobiling and wildlife safaris; an examination of
the reactions of the early explorers to their first sightings of
this phenomenon; and insights into the myths and legends of the
northern indigenous peoples. There is even advice on how and where
to get married in ice chapels! Whether the northern lights are
still on your bucket list or you are an experienced aurora
aficionado, Bradt's comprehensive guide to the Northern Lights
remains the essential companion to planning and getting the most
out of any trip to watch one of the world's most remarkable events.
North Korea's Kumgangsan is one of Asia's most celebrated sacred
mountain ranges, comparable in fame to Mount Tai in China and Mount
Fuji in Japan. Carving Status at Kumgangsan marks a paradigm shift
in the research about East Asian mountains by introducing an
entirely new field: autographic rock graffiti. The book details how
late Choson (ca. 1600-1900 CE) Korean elite travelers used
Kumgangsan to demonstrate their high social status by carving
inscriptions, naming sites, and joining the literary pedigree of
visitors to renowned locales. Such travel practices show how social
competition emerged in the spatial context of a landscape. Hence,
Carving Status at Kumgangsan argues for an expansion of accepted
historical narratives on travel and mountain space in premodern
East Asia. Rather than interpreting pilgrimage routes as
exclusively religious or tourist, in Kumgangsan's case they were
also an important site of collective memory. A journey to
Kumgangsan to view and contribute to its sites of memory was an
endeavor that late Choson Koreans hoped to achieve in their lives.
Based on multidisciplinary research drawing on literary writings,
court records, gazetteers, maps, songs, calligraphy, and paintings,
Carving Status at Kumgangsan is the first historical study of this
practice. It will appeal to scholars in fields ranging from East
Asian history, literature, and geography, to pilgrimage studies and
art history. *Winner of the 2022 Patricia Buckley Ebrey Prize for a
distinguished book on the history of China proper, Vietnam, Chinese
Central Asia, Mongolia, Manchuria, Korea, or Japan, prior to 1800,
sponsored by the American Historical Association
In Chicago, the Bears’s grip on the city spans generations and
cultures, endures disappointments, and impels celebration of
triumphs great and small. From the team’s humble beginnings to
its century-long status as the flagship NFL franchise, the Chicago
Tribune has documented every season. The Chicago Tribune Book of
the Chicago Bears is an impressive testament to Bears tradition,
compiling photography, original box scores, and entertaining essays
from Hall of Fame reporters. This expanded second edition will
include updated writing from the past five years, and will be
released to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the NFL—and
the Chicago Bears. The Chicago Tribune Book of the Chicago Bears is
a decade-by-decade look at the team, beginning with George Halas
moving the team to Chicago in 1921. The Bears soon became known as
the Monsters of the Midway, dominating the sport with four NFL
titles in the 1940s, seven winning campaigns in the 1950s, and a
final title with Halas as coach in 1963. Their 1985 Super Bowl
championship transformed the city's passion into a full-blown love
affair that continues today. Professional football was practically
born in Chicago, nurtured by Halas through the Depression and a
world war. The NFL game was made for Chicago, in Chicago, by a
Chicagoan. Now the award-winning journalists, photographers, and
editors of the Chicago Tribune have produced a comprehensive
collector’s item that every Bears fan will love.
