"This is an adorable little picture book about a kitten looking for her missing friend. The illustrations are wonderful and make this book perfect for read alouds to younger grade levels, as you can constantly ask them to look and ask them "do you see bunny"? (Hint: bunny is hiding on every page!) I also enjoyed the exploration of different rooms in a household and the objects found in each of them-so many discussions to be had with young readers over this cute little picture book!" - Springdale Elementary "I think this would be a fantastic book for children that are learning sight words. The illustrations are also easily identifiable to match the sight words. The illustrations are also super adorable and very well thought out." - Spines and Stitches Muffin wants to play with Bunny. Kumon Math Skills Workbooks are unique because they focus on teaching
one specific skill from start to finish. With just the right amount of
practice, children master each topic and gain confidence without
becoming bored or frustrated. Featuring activities, full-color images,
and the trusted Kumon learning method, My Book of Addition helps
students aged 5 to 7 learn to add single-digit numbers in a
step-by-step manner, enabling them to gain solid calculation skills
without being confused about decimal places. Building basic addition
skills is vital to later understanding the decimal system, the
foundation of higher-level arithmetic concepts and skills taught in
school curriculums.
Category Description for Kumon Math Workbooks (1-6):
The series is meant to be self-directed. Students take charge of their own learning on every level. They complete pages, check their work, record their scores, and determine whether to move on or review. The pace almost guarantees success. Children should work a "few" pages a day; assignments should take about 20 minutes to complete. Pages are marked with the skill level required at top and the points each question is valued at (a very young child will need some help totaling points). Very short instruction (or an example) is given on a few pages. For example, there is a short explanation when children begin to subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number where borrowing is needed. However, the child is given every opportunity to intuit this beforehand. By the time he reaches this page, he has already been subtracting double-digit numbers for many pages. Some of these would require borrowing, but, since they are able to subtract, say, 7 from 12, the Kumon method wants the child to see a pattern when increasing to 7 from 22, 7 from 32, etc. This does remind me of the approach used in Miquon as well. Besides these very infrequent helps there are just some small prompts for children to look for patterns in their answers, and words of encouragement. Pages are pleasing to the eye; they are colored, clean, and problems are well-spaced. The Kumon method has been used successfully with children around the world for over 50 years. It does seem like it would help a child to take charge of his own learning and help himself to understanding rather than being spoon-fed each bite. For Kumon math earlier than Grade 1, see the Kumon section in Early Learning.
Using simple words and bright illustrations, author-illustrator Taro Gomi shows children that sometimes knowledge can come from all kinds of friends.
Don't be afraid to delve into the good, bad, and sometimes truly ugly world of germs. Microbiologist Jennifer Gardy, who calls herself a disease detective, picks up her microscope to bring expert insight to the microbes that are all around us but are too small to see. Irreverent, playful, and contagious in all the best ways, "It's Catching" discusses a range of germs and the diseases they cause, from the common cold to food poisoning to the Ebola virus. Young readers will be enticed -- and pretty grossed out -- while becoming immersed in information about pus, bacteria, DNA, genomes, and more. They will learn how germs have shaped human history and also about the individuals who are working to hunt them down. Additional elements, like trading card-style profiles of a variety of diseases, a board game, and a detailed index, make this infectious read both useful and entertaining.
