Economics and Contemporary Land Use Policy - Development and Conservation at the Rural-Urban Fringe (Hardcover, illustrated... Economics and Contemporary Land Use Policy - Development and Conservation at the Rural-Urban Fringe (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Robert J. Johnston, Stephen K Swallow
R3,927 Discovery Miles 39 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As external forces increase the demand for land conversion, communities are increasingly open to policies that encourage conservation of farm and forest lands. This interest in conservation notwithstanding, the consequences of land-use policy and the drivers of land conversions are often unclear. One of the first books to deal exclusively with the economics of rural-urban sprawl, Economics and Contemporary Land Use Policy explores the causes and consequences of rapidly accelerating land conversions in urban-fringe areas, as well as implications for effective policy responses.

This book emphasizes the critical role of both spatial and economic-ecological interactions in contemporary land use, and the importance of a practical, policy-oriented perspective. Chapters illustrate an interaction of conceptual, theoretical, and empirical approaches to land-use policy and highlight advances in policy-oriented economics associated with the conservation and development of urban-fringe land. Issues addressed include (1) the appropriate role of economics in land-use policy, (2) forecasting and management of land conversion, (3) interactions among land use, property values, and local taxes, and (4) relationships among rural amenities, rural character, and urban-fringe land-use policy.

Economics and Contemporary Land Use Policy is a timely and relevant contribution to the land-use policy debate and will prove an essential reference for policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels. It will also be of interest to students, academics, and anyone with an interest in the practical application of economics to land-use issues.

"The convergence of land use and policy represents a criticalarea of ongoing research, yet one that is fraught with special challenges.... The reemergence of the economics of land use as a compelling field of inquiry reflects the many dimensions in which land contributes to social well-being and the many policy arenas in which land plays an important role. Once viewed only as an input in the production of food and fiber, land now stands as a key element in the definition of households' quality of life." -- Nancy E. Bockstael, University of Maryland, from the foreword

Designing Regenerative Cultures (Paperback): Daniel Christian Wahl Designing Regenerative Cultures (Paperback)
Daniel Christian Wahl; Foreword by David W. Orr, Graham Leicester
R759 R684 Discovery Miles 6 840 Save R75 (10%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This is a 'Whole Earth Catalog' for the 21st century: an impressive and wide-ranging analysis of what's wrong with our societies, organizations, ideologies, worldviews and cultures - and how to put them right. The book covers the finance system, agriculture, design, ecology, economy, sustainability, organizations and society at large. In it, Daniel Wahl explores ways in which we can reframe and understand the crises that we currently face and explores how we can live our way into the future. Moving from patterns of thinking and believing to our practice of education, design and community living, he systematically shows how we can stop chasing the mirage of certainty and control in a complex and unpredictable world. The book asks how can we collaborate in the creation of diverse regenerative cultures adapted to the unique biocultural conditions of place? How can we create conditions conducive to life? "This book is a valuable contribution to the important discussion of the worldview and value system we need to redesign our businesses, economies, and technologies - in fact, our entire culture - so as to make them regenerative rather than destructive." Fritjof Capra, author of The Web of Life, coauthor of The Systems View of Life: A Unifying Vision. "This is an excellent addition to the literature on ecological design and it will certainly form a keystone in the foundations of the new MA in Ecological Design Thinking at Schumacher College, Devon. It not only contains a wealth of ideas on what Dr Wahl has termed 'Designing Regenerative Cultures' but what is probably more important, it provides some stimulating new ways of looking at persistent problems in our contemporary culture and hence opens up new ways of thinking and acting in the future." Seaton Baxter OBE, Professor in Ecological Design Thinking, Schumacher College, UK

The Nature of Data - Infrastructures, Environments, Politics (Paperback): Jenny Goldstein, Eric Nost The Nature of Data - Infrastructures, Environments, Politics (Paperback)
Jenny Goldstein, Eric Nost
R743 Discovery Miles 7 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When we look at some of the most pressing issues in environmental politics today, it is hard to avoid data technologies. Big data, artificial intelligence, and data dashboards all promise "revolutionary" advances in the speed and scale at which governments, corporations, conservationists, and even individuals can respond to environmental challenges. By bringing together scholars from geography, anthropology, science and technology studies, and ecology, The Nature of Data explores how the digital realm is a significant site in which environmental politics are waged. This collection as a whole makes the argument that we cannot fully understand the current conjuncture in critical, global environmental politics without understanding the role of data platforms, devices, standards, and institutions. In particular, The Nature of Data addresses the contested practices of making and maintaining data infrastructure, the imaginaries produced by data infrastructures, the relations between state and civil society that data infrastructure reworks, and the conditions under which technology can further socio-ecological justice instead of re-entrenching state and capitalist power. This innovative volume presents some of the first research in this new but rapidly growing subfield that addresses the role of data infrastructures in critical environmental politics.

A New Approach to Conservation - The Importance of the Individual through Wildlife Rehabilitation (Paperback): Gill Aitken A New Approach to Conservation - The Importance of the Individual through Wildlife Rehabilitation (Paperback)
Gill Aitken
R1,235 Discovery Miles 12 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Conservationists assume a set of underlying values which guide their decision-making and action. The safeguarding or promotion of biodiversity, it is believed, is the means by which nature is best protected. This book examines - and challenges - these general conservation assumptions. While reinforcing the need to halt extinction and value biodiversity, it shows that biodiversity needs to be more clearly understood, perhaps being replaced by the notion of 'wildness'. It examines how biodiversity is a holistic term, and how individual species need to be assessed and their own contribution to 'wildness' has to be recognized. The book proposes a new way of conservation - one which makes more room for neglected, rather than endangered or rare species. It also asserts that 'wildness' is not incompatible with certain kinds of human intervention.

Effecting Positive Change through Ecotourism - The Future We Want (Hardcover): Kelly Bricker, Deborah Kerstetter Effecting Positive Change through Ecotourism - The Future We Want (Hardcover)
Kelly Bricker, Deborah Kerstetter
R3,901 Discovery Miles 39 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is designed to show how ecotourism theory can be put into practice by exploring innovation, program applications, and research-supported case studies in ecotourism. The chapters reflect results of applied research focused on socio-economics of community development; the value of considering system-wide approaches to the relationships between communities and natural resources; the intricacies of capacity building and training facilitators in ecotourism; and education through ecotourism experiences. The cumulative impact of the research presented highlights innovative approaches to visitor management, community engagement, and education to critically address the complexities associated with visitation to natural areas and the dependence upon conservation of ecosystems and associated communities. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ecotourism.

The New Power Politics of Global Climate Governance (Paperback): Maximilian Terhalle, Charlotte Streck The New Power Politics of Global Climate Governance (Paperback)
Maximilian Terhalle, Charlotte Streck
R1,347 Discovery Miles 13 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is based on the assumption that great powers determine global politics and, in this instance, environmental politics. It addresses the approaches of both established and rising powers and their implications for the advancement of international climate negotiations. The new introduction looks at the key developments in this realm since 2013, examining the bilateral deals between China and the United States and the results of the UNFCCC's 21st Convention of the Parties (COP) convening at Paris in 2015. Two key features link the contributions of this volume: their underlying assumption that major powers are the central actors in determining global environmental politics; and their assessment of, and implications of, the approaches both of rising and established major powers for global climate norms. One key argument of this volume is that today's geopolitics are about who gets how much in the fiercely competitive race over the available 'carbon space'. The book concludes that prudently balancing power in the new century requires a fair sharing of burden among the existing and emerging powers. In light of such burden-sharing, pluralistic domestic politics as well as diverging normative beliefs and worldviews require consideration of different conditions, even if historical legacies of the industrialised world have increasingly been put into question as a political argument by the United States. This book is based on a special issue of the journal Climate Policy.

The Environment and International Politics - International Fisheries, Heidegger and Social Method (Hardcover): Hakan Seckinelgin The Environment and International Politics - International Fisheries, Heidegger and Social Method (Hardcover)
Hakan Seckinelgin
R3,918 Discovery Miles 39 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book argues that environmental problems represent a deeper problem in the way the relationship between human beings and nature is conceptualised, a relationship which also grounds the implicit ethical and political concerns of International Relations and its understanding of environmental politics.
The twentieth century has witnessed the emergence of environmental issues as among the most important problems in the global political agenda.

This book argues that limitations in our ability to understand and address global ecological challenges are related to the dominance of a distinction between humans and nature. This distinction is taken to be the basis of thinking about politics in general and about international relations in particular. As an attempt to explore this constraint on human thought, The Environment and International Politics provides an empirical case study of one major environmental regime created to deal with ongoing problems in global fisheries at the international level: the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III). This convention, which is generally seen as a success story, is analysed on the basis of its application to the South Pacific region, providing greater understanding of the fundamental dualism between human and nature that provides the groundwork for international environmental politics. Heidegger's philosophy is then discussed as providing a different view on the nature-human relationship - a view that could inform a different kind of political engagement.

With its novel approach and erudite scholarship, "The Environment and International Politics" will appeal to students and scholars of philosophy as well as thoseinterested in the interaction between the environmental and political spheres.

Global Lessons for Watershed Management in the United States (Paperback, Illustrated Ed): J. Goldstein, A. Huber-Lee Global Lessons for Watershed Management in the United States (Paperback, Illustrated Ed)
J. Goldstein, A. Huber-Lee
R3,218 Discovery Miles 32 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Water resource management in the United States is evolving in the face of continuing challenges to protect water quality, provide adequate quantities of water for competing uses, and protect habitat and other natural resources. In many jurisdictions and agencies this evolution is increasingly leading toward adoption of watershed management. This approach is characterized by planning and decision making on a watershed scale, integration of a variety of competing water resource priorities and goals, cooperation of multiple stakeholders and governmental agencies, and increased levels of public participation. While the number and diversity of watershed management initiatives underway in the United States is impressive, successful transition to this integrated approach remains challenging due to institutional, regulatory, and information barriers. In certain respects - Geographic Information Systems mapping, wetlands regulations, citizen participation - U.S. watershed initiatives are highly advanced and serve as models for efforts around the world. In other respects - cross jurisdictional coordination and cooperation, agreements on the sharing of resources, habitat protection and restoration - innovatie approaches implemented outside the U.S. show great promise and offer important lessons to U.S. decision makers. This report identifies the most promising watershed planning and management approaches from around the world; evaluates how they operate, their benefits and limitations; and assesses the degree to which these approaches could be successfully adapted to the U.S. context. Drawing on this international experience, the report is intended to inform policy makers and practitioners and to promote the implementation of integrated watershed management approaches that are most likely to succeed.

Ecologies of Comparison - An Ethnography of Endangerment in Hong Kong (Paperback): Timothy Choy Ecologies of Comparison - An Ethnography of Endangerment in Hong Kong (Paperback)
Timothy Choy
R656 Discovery Miles 6 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A rich ethnography of ecopolitics in Hong Kong in the late 1990s, as the region shifted to Chinese sovereignty, "Ecologies of Comparison" describes how ecological concepts of uniqueness and scale resonated among environmentalists, including those seeking to preserve a species of white dolphin, to protect an aging fishing village from redevelopment, and to legitimize air quality as an object of political and medical concern. During his research, Tim Choy became increasingly interested in the power of the notion of specificity. While documenting the expert and lay production of Hong Kong's biological, cultural, and political specificities, he began comparing the logics and narrative forms that made different types of specificity--such as species, culture, locality, and state autonomy--possible and meaningful. He came to understand these logics and forms as "ecologies of comparison," conceptual practices through which an event or form of life comes to matter in environmentalist and other political terms. Choy's ethnography is about environmentalism, Hong Kong, and the ways that we think about environmentalism in Hong Kong and other places. It is also about how politics, freedom, culture, expertise, and other concepts figure in comparison-based knowledge practices.

Multiple Stressors (Paperback, Illustrated Ed): S. M Swanson Multiple Stressors (Paperback, Illustrated Ed)
S. M Swanson
R3,193 Discovery Miles 31 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is a pressing need for developing and testing a general set of theories in order to provide a confident basis for prediction of multiple stressor effects. Confident prediction is central to confident decision making in water pollution control. Consequently, WERF commissioned this study which has as its goal to provide a study design based on good science that helps establish a general, conceptual approach to multiple stressors. The objectives of the study are to develop a flexible and scientifically defensible conceptual model of the environmental effects of multiple stressors on river and stream ecosystems; develop a study design to test the conceptual model of multiple stressor effects; and, document the process used to arrive at the conceptual model. The multiple stressor conceptual model includes two main components: (1) a diagram that portrays the main features of the study team's understanding of how multiple stressors would interact and the nature of the effects; and (2) a series of three testable risk hypotheses. These two components follow the guidance provided by the U.S. EPA for ecological risk assessment. The proposed conceptual model encompasses the following key assumptions: interactions between the stressor and the ecosystem are dependant upon the existing baseline conditions; for each stressor/baseline combination there will theoretically be a functional and a structural response; effects on habitat are caused by structural or functional responses to stressors; and effects on habitat can cause structural or functional responses.

A Guardian Best Nature Book of the Year

The magic and mystery of the woods are embedded in culture, from ancient folklore to modern literature. They offer us refuge: a place to play, a place to think. They are the generous providers of timber and energy. They let us dream of other ways of living. Yet we now face a future where taking a walk in the woods is consigned to the tales we tell our children.

Immersing himself in the beauty of woodland Britain, Peter Fiennes explores our long relationship with the woods and the sad and violent story of how so many have been lost. Just as we need them, our woods need us too. But who, if anyone, is looking out for them?

Leisure and the Politics of the Environment (Paperback): Louise Mansfield, Belinda Wheaton Leisure and the Politics of the Environment (Paperback)
Louise Mansfield, Belinda Wheaton

Princeton Architectural Press
R490 Discovery Miles 4 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

50 tear-out posters, each designed by a unique artist or designer, that convey the urgency of needing to take action to help prevent climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate, a body of scientists convened by the United Nations, recently reported that an even hotter climate is certain as a result of the burning coal, oil and gas, the planet has already heated by approximately 2 degrees Fahrenheit and the window of time to avoid additional impacts is closing. Heat waves, water shortages, and large-scale animal and plant die-offs are now inevitable. However, changing this course is still possible through collective action. Historically, posters are one of the most common mediums of communication for dissent or social change. Posters for the Planet is a collection of 50 posters, each from a unique artist or designer (selected from an international call), that convey the urgency of needing to take action to prevent climate change. The posters are 11 x 14 in, printed on FSC paper, and intended to be used by activists, students, and anyone interested in enacting change.

Under the Weather - Reimagining Mobility in the Climate Crisis (Paperback): Stephanie Sodero Under the Weather - Reimagining Mobility in the Climate Crisis (Paperback)
Stephanie Sodero
R834 Discovery Miles 8 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Humans and human mobility, including driving and flying, are entangled with the climate emergency. Fossil-fuelled mobility worsens severe weather, and in turn, severe weather disrupts human mobility. A shift to zero-emission vehicles is critical but insufficient to repair the damage or prepare communities for the coming disruptions severe weather will bring. In Under the Weather Stephanie Sodero explores the intersection between human mobility and severe weather. Anchored in two Atlantic Canadian hurricane case studies, Hurricane Juan in Mi'kma'ki/Nova Scotia in 2003 and Hurricane Igor in Ktaqmkuk/Newfoundland in 2010, the book contributes to contemporary cultural and policy discussions by offering five practical recommendations - revolutionize mobility, prioritize vital mobility of medical goods and services, embrace ecological mobilities, rebrand redundancy, and think flexibly - for how mobility can be reimagined to work with, rather than against, the climate in ways that also benefit the health, education, and economy of local communities. This ecological approach to mobilities sheds light on extreme mobility dependency and the impact of mobility disruptions on the ground in Canadian communities. Focusing on the entangled relationship between human mobility and the climate, Under the Weather examines how communities can transform their relationship with mobility to enable greater resilience.

A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety - How to Keep Your Cool on a Warming Planet (Paperback): Sarah Jaquette Ray A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety - How to Keep Your Cool on a Warming Planet (Paperback)

Gen Z's first "existential toolkit" for combating eco-guilt and burnout while advocating for climate justice. A youth movement is reenergizing global environmental activism. The "climate generation"-late millennials and iGen, or Generation Z-is demanding that policy makers and government leaders take immediate action to address the dire outcomes predicted by climate science. Those inheriting our planet's environmental problems expect to encounter challenges, but they may not have the skills to grapple with the feelings of powerlessness and despair that may arise when they confront this seemingly intractable situation. Drawing on a decade of experience leading and teaching in college environmental studies programs, Sarah Jaquette Ray has created an "existential tool kit" for the climate generation. Combining insights from psychology, sociology, social movements, mindfulness, and the environmental humanities, Ray explains why and how we need to let go of eco-guilt, resist burnout, and cultivate resilience while advocating for climate justice. A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety is the essential guidebook for the climate generation-and perhaps the rest of us-as we confront the greatest environmental threat of our time.

The aim of these volumes is not to cover all phases of ion-exchange theory, which may be found in general texts, nor to cover every application in the literature, or to show an engineer ways on how to become an expert in the field so he coulddo it all by himself. The main purpose of these books is to show the practical engineer what has been done in various types of applications of ion-exchange processes in pollution control, how to set up laboratory tests, the problems that may be encountered to identify the individuals and organizations who are experts in the various phases of ion exchange, and most importantly, to emphasize the new developments in the polymers with active sites that offer new approaches to wastewater treatment methods.

Conservation translocation - the movement of species for conservation benefit - includes reintroducing species into the wild, reinforcing dwindling populations, helping species shift ranges in the face of environmental change, and moving species to enhance ecosystem function. Conservation translocation can lead to clear conservation benefits and can excite and engage a broad spectrum of people. However, these projects are often complex and involve careful consideration and planning of biological and socio-economic issues. This volume draws on the latest research and experience of specialists from around the world to help provide guidance on best practice and to promote thinking over how conservation translocations can continue to be developed. The key concepts cover project planning, biological and social factors influencing the efficacy of translocations, and how to deal with complex decision-making. This book aims to inspire, inform and help practitioners maximise their chances of success, and minimise the risks of failure.

Against Extinction - The Story of Conservation (Paperback): William (Bill) Adams Against Extinction - The Story of Conservation (Paperback)
William (Bill) Adams
R1,222 Discovery Miles 12 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Conservation in the 21st century needs to be different and this book is a good indicator of why' Bulletin of British Ecological Society. Against Extinction tells the history of wildlife conservation from its roots in the 19th century, through the foundation of the Society for the Preservation of the Wild Fauna of the Empire in London in 1903 to the huge and diverse international movement of the present day. It vividly portrays conservation's legacy of big game hunting, the battles for the establishment of national parks, the global importance of species conservation and debates over the sustainable use of and trade in wildlife. Bill Adams addresses the big questions and ideas that have driven conservation for the last 100 years: How can the diversity of life be maintained as human demands on the Earth expand seemingly without limit? How can preservation be reconciled with human rights and the development needs of the poor? Is conservation something that can be imposed by a knowledgeable elite, or is it something that should emerge naturally from people's free choices? These have never been easy questions, and they are as important in the 21st century as at any time in the past. The author takes us on a lively historical journey in search of the answers.

Woods and People - Putting Forests on the Map (Paperback, 2nd edition): David Foot Woods and People - Putting Forests on the Map (Paperback, 2nd edition)
David Foot
R342 Discovery Miles 3 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Britain's great cloak of natural forest disappeared mostly in prehistoric times. Over the passage of time and by the industrial revolution, Britain's economy had become almost entirely dependent on timber imports from abroad. Shipping blockades in the First World War meant a frantic search for woodlands that could be cut down to make vital pit props and sawn wood for wartime construction. After the war, Britain's tree cover was near to an all-time low. Only since 1919 have practical measures been taken to reverse the long history of forest decline, and a hundred years of tree planting has seen the forest cover of Britain more than double. Today, tree planting in Britain is motivated more by environmental and social concerns than purely timber production. In Woods and People, David Foot reveals the story of twentieth-century forest creation, and the eureka moment in the 1980s that challenged foresters and conservationists to work together on new ideas.
