This book gathers the proceedings of an international conference held at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for materials Science and Technology) in Dubendorf, Switzerland, in July 2020. The conference series was established by the International Society of Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructure (iSMARTi) for promoting and discussing state-of-the-art design, maintenance, rehabilitation and management of pavements. The inaugural conference was held at Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2000. The series has steadily grown over the past 20 years, with installments hosted in various countries all over the world. The respective contributions share the latest insights from research and practice in the maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements, and discuss advanced materials, technologies and solutions for achieving an even more sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

This book gathers the proceedings of the EPPM 2019 conference, and highlights innovative work by researchers and practitioners active in various industries around the globe. This thesis investigates the fracture of nearly incompressible hyperelastic media. It covers the different characteristics of bulk material failure under dilatational or distortional loads and develops a unified description of the corresponding failure surface. It proposes a coupled strain and energy failure criterion for the assessment of notch-induced crack nucleation and presents a weak-interface-model that allows for efficient stress, strain and failure analyses of hyperelastic adhesive lap joints. Theoretical concepts for the measurement of fracture properties of nonlinear elastic materials are provided. The methodology is developed using two exemplary hyperelastic silicones, DOWSIL 993 Structural Glazing Sealant and DOWSIL Transparent Structural Silicone Adhesive, and is validated using large sets of experiments of different loading conditions.

This volume outlines a progressively staged process focused on fostering a more effective, more efficient, and greener global construction industry. The research-based book commences with an evaluation of eight methodologies identified after a worldwide literature and compliance review. While the presented models are mathematically inspired, they are nothing beyond what an engineering graduate is expected to know: some algebra, a little calculus, a little statistics, and, especially, undergraduate-level understanding of the probability theory. The book is organized in three parts and fourteen chapters. In Part I the authors provide the general introduction to risk and uncertainty analysis applied to engineering construction projects. The basic formulations and the methods for risk assessment used during project planning phase are discussed in Part II, while in Part III the authors present the methods for monitoring and (re)assessment of risks during project execution.

This book provides readers with an elementary understanding of the material behavior of structural silicones in facades. Based on extensive experimental investigations on a transparent structural silicone adhesive (TSSA), the material behavior, failure, and microscopic effects such as stress whitening, cavitation failure, and the Mullins effect are analyzed. In turn, novel hyperelastic material models are developed to account for nonlinear material behavior under arbitrary deformations. The development of a volumetric hyperelastic model makes it possible for the first time to approximate the structural behavior of TSSA under constrained tensile load and cavitation. The material models discussed here were implemented in a finite element code for validation, and their quality was confirmed by three-dimensional numerical simulations, in which an additional stretch-based failure criterion was evaluated for failure prediction. The numerical studies are in good agreement with the experimental results.

The main criteria for assessing the load-bearing behaviour and risk potential of monolithic glass are its fragmentation and the morphology of the fragments. These depend strongly non-linearly on the strain energy density present in the glass at the time of fracture, which can be converted into fracture energy. Thus, the design and optimization of structural glazing in engineering requires both knowledge of the relevant parameters and mechanisms during the fracture process in glass and an understanding of the characteristics of the fracture structure. Based on fracture mechanics considerations and comprehensive experimental investigations, various aspects and physical quantities of fracture behaviour as well as characteristics and parameters of fracture pattern morphology of fragmented, tempered soda-lime glass were studied and correlated with the stored strain energy. The relationship between fragmentation behavior and strain energy was elaborated using the energy criterion in Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) related to the initial strain energy before fragmentation and in the post-fracture state. Furthermore, a machine learning inspired approach for the prediction of 2D macro-scale fragmentation of tempered glass was developed and elaborated based on fracture mechanics considerations and statistical analysis of the fracture pattern morphology. A method was deduced and applied in which the fracture pattern of tempered glass is predicted and simulated by Voronoi tessellation of point patterns based on Bayesian spatial point statistics fed with energy conditions in LEFM.

A requirement for the safe design of thermoplastic parts is the ability to precisely predict mechanical behaviour by finite element simulations. Typical examples include the engineering of relevant components in automotive applications. For this purpose adequate material models are essential. In this context, the present work introduces a material modelling approach for short fibre reinforced thermoplastics (SFRTPs). SFRTP parts are processed cost-effectively by injection moulding and show a varying degree of anisotropy due to the locally inhomogeneous fibre distributions that arise during the moulding process. The presented material model considers linear-elastic behaviour and non-linear orthotropic stress-state dependent viscoplastic deformation for arbitrary fibre distributions. The constitutive equations are verified with the experiments of a PPGF30 material regarding different stress-states and orientations.

A method for incorporating and comparing stochastic scatter of macroscopic parameters in crash simulations is developed in the present work and applied on a 30 wt.% short glass fiber reinforced polypropylene. Therefore, a statistical testing plan on the basis of three point bending tests with 30 samples for each configuration is carried out. The tests are conducted at 0 Degrees, 30 Degrees, 45 Degrees and 90 Degrees orientation angles and at strain rates of 0.021/s and 85/s. The obtained results are evaluated statistically by means of probability distribution functions. An orthotropic elastic plastic material model is utilized for the numerical investigations. Monte Carlo Simulations with variations in macroscopic parameters are run to emulate the stochastic rupture behavior of the experiments.
