Finally back in print, Carpentry & Joinery, first published in 1907, is the bible of finish carpentry from a golden era of architectural woodworking. Every aspect of joinery is covered in this book, with more than 1800 engravings and twelve spectacular plates to illustrate the topics. This incredibly comprehensive volume contains chapters on timber; joints; floors; partitions; windows; doors; moldings; tools and more. Each subject is explored, illustrated, and examined first in the simple case and then in fancier and fancier permutations. This is the best instruction ever written that explains the details of both simple and fancy late Victorian architectural woodworking. Whether you are a joiner, restorer, or architect, you will be amazed at the level of practical information, clarity of explanation, and continued utility of this book. Certain subjects which are commonly ignored such as the use of joiner s rods are covered in great detail along with detailed instructions for layout all the various constructions in the book. Because this is such an important book we wanted an expert opinion to put the book in the context of its time. In a new introduction master housewright Roy Underhill compares the instruction in the book with a first hand account of an early 20th century joiner. "We again have the voices of first rate masters at our sides." - Roy Underhill, from his Introduction The original book contained 12 color plates which, sadly, we could not afford to reproduce in color. However we are making a PDF of the color plates available for download http: //www.brooklyntoolandcraft.com/hasluckplates. Softcover 6 3/4" x 9 5/8" 567 pages plus 12 plates.

Measuring Time - Improving Project Performance Using Earned Value Management (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Mario Vanhoucke Measuring Time - Improving Project Performance Using Earned Value Management (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Mario Vanhoucke
R3,073 Discovery Miles 30 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Earned Value Management (EVM) is a project management technique for measuring project progress in terms of cost, schedule and scope, and has developed into a very effective way to uncover performance problems at an early and correctible stage in any given project. From its earliest days as a financial analysis tool in the US in the early 1960 s, it steadily grew in use through the US Department of Defense until it was made the standard measurement for all DoD, NASA, and Department of Energy projects, and was widely adopted by publicly-traded companies trying to comply with the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley ruling calling for greater transparency and accountability. It has also long been used in software engineering projects.

Winning the 2008 Research Award from IPMA for his research leading to this proposed book, author Mario Vanhoucke has surveyed the published literature to find and evaluate the effectiveness of the latest developments (and established practices) in EVM. After first explaining the fundamentals and terminology of the practice, he explores all the latest research trends and then tests them against a group of fictitious projects to gauge their effectiveness, offering general results applicable to a wide set of project types that researchers and practitioners can use to expand their work in EVM-managed projects. With a focus on the simple calculations behind EVM systems, Vanhoucke shows how they can often lead to misinterpretation and frustration and how to avoid common mistakes.

Meant to complement rather than compete with the existing books on the subject, the proposed book deals with the project performance and control phases of the project life cycle to present a detailed investigation of the project s time performance measurement methods and risk analysis techniques in order to evaluate existing and newly developed methods in terms of their abilities to improve the corrective actions decision-making process during project tracking. As readers apply what is learned from the book, EVM practices will become even more effective in project management and cost engineering. Individual chapters look at simulation studies in forecast accuracy (under nine different scenarios); schedule adherence; time sensitivity; activity sensitivity; and using top-down or bottom-up project tracking. Vanhoucke also offers an actual real-life case study, a tutorial on the use of ProTrack software (newly developed based on his research) in EVM, and conclusions on the relative effectiveness for each technique presented. This will be an important read for anyone researching, using, or studying EVM and will certainly help to push the field forward in the coming years.

A. Rahn
R6,890 R5,444 Discovery Miles 54 440 Save R1,446 (21%) Ships in 7 - 13 working days

Most books on soldering work like cookbooks; they purport to offer the correct recipe for every task and each new situation. More realistically, this book helps engineers and quality controllers to adapt techniques and processes to changing situations along the electronics production cycle by affording them with an environment in which production problems can be solved through flexible thinking based on scientific fact. It achieves this aim in great part by providing a clear and coherent blending of the chemical and physical theory behind soldering technology with practical applications in the electronics manufacturing industry. Throughout The Basics of Soldering the focus is on the complex interrelationships of the different parameters. Through-hole and surface-mounted joining are treated in full, as are cleaning and statistical quality control. Instead of just the usual "cooking recipes" found in most books on the subject, readers will find well-founded scientific theories combined with exhaustive coverage of contemporary methods and materials and a thorough understanding of real-world applications of soldering technology. The result is faster problem solving, more effective training of new personnel, and a better understanding of soldering and related technologies. Because it is based on a successful seminar series, The Basics of Soldering is also an excellent teaching tool, well suited to both graduate and upper level undergraduate courses.

The Sanitation, Water Supply and Sewage Disposal of Country Houses (Paperback): William Paul Gerhard The Sanitation, Water Supply and Sewage Disposal of Country Houses (Paperback)
William Paul Gerhard
R593 Discovery Miles 5 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1909, the first part of the book covers the general sanitation of country houses, brings a comparison of life in the city and in the country from a health point of view, dwells on the advantages of country life, and gives a condensed summary of the essential requirements of healthfulness in country houses. The soil, the subsoil, surface drainage, aspect, healthful surroundings and those which are objectionable, the cellar of the house, the lighting, heating and ventilation, the water supply, sewerage and plumbing, are briefly discussed. In the second part detailed advice is given as to how to procure a satisfactory water supply. The sources of water, the various modes of raising it, the storage in reservoirs, elevated tanks or underground pressure tanks, and finally water distribution, are dwelt on at length and illustrated by actual examples from the author's engineering practice. The third part discusses the all-important question of the sewage disposal for houses not in reach of sewers. Particular attention is given to the latest development in disposal methods, to the so-called biological or bacterial purification systems, including septic tanks, cultivation tanks, contact filter beds and sprinkling or trickling filters.

Box Furniture - How to Make a Hundred Useful Articles for the Home (Paperback): Louise Brigham Box Furniture - How to Make a Hundred Useful Articles for the Home (Paperback)
Louise Brigham
R689 Discovery Miles 6 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1910, this unusual book is about making furniture by hand using old boxes and crates. From the author's preface: "Two summers on the island of Spitzbergen taught me, more than all previous experiments, the latent possibilities of a box. Our camp was located seven hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle; Hammerfest, Norway, 535 miles to the southeast, was the nearest point from which supplies could be obtained. Ice and snow cut off the settlement from the outside world for eight months of the year. The provisions and other equipment necessary for the camp of eighty miners and workmen had to be carried in boxes on the ships that came from the mainland during the four summer months. When the portable house which was to be the home of the manager, his wife, and myself as their guest, had been put up and the supplies unpacked, the boxes began to accumulate. ... No lumber was available in Spitzbergen. ... cut off from materials the possibilities of the box seemed greater than ever, and the work, which daily grew in interest, commenced. As I worked in that far-off marvelous land of continuous day, surrounded by mountains and glaciers, I felt anew the truth, so familiar to all, that work to be of real value must be honest, useful, and beautiful..." With instructions on how to make 100 different items of useful furniture from boxes and cargo crates; including jardiniere, plant box, footstool, clock case, wall rack, washstand, bookcases, desk, game table, umbrella stand, nursery table, picture frames, corner seats, etc. etc.

Ancient Egyptian Masonry - The Building Craft (Paperback): Somers Clarke, R. Engelback Ancient Egyptian Masonry - The Building Craft (Paperback)
Somers Clarke, R. Engelback
R746 R625 Discovery Miles 6 250 Save R121 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Out of all the books on Egypt, this one reveals much of the highly detailed methods the Egyptians used in building their stone constructions.

We often marvel at the incredible structures they built, not knowing exactly how it was done. The Great Pyramid's construction still remains a mystery to many people as far as the lifting of the stones to such great heights is concerned. To this day interesting theories abound, but no absolute proof, or a recreation of the true methods used, have ever been demonstrated. The authors openly state that their explanation of the Great Pyramid's construction is not the final answer and that many mysteries still remain, yet do a fascinating job in detailing how the huge stones were dressed and laid out.

Even though the ancient Egyptians did not have high speed drills, they still had used drills that were adequate enough to do such absolutely perfect work -- as depicted in a 5th Dynasty temple in Abusir (found later in the book). Many mysteries are cleared up in this incredibly detailed book, which includes over 250 sketches and pictures that back up the author's claims.

Any serious researcher into ancient Egyptian structures should not be without this book. It seems at first glance that many of the incredible monuments of Egypt were built and raised almost by magic. The structures are absolutely awe-inspiring, but the authors strip away much of the "magic" to reveal how hard work, creative ingenuity, and an advanced knowledge of mathematics and physics account for some of the amazing architectural feats performed in early Egypt. At the same time, when a mystery still remains for the authors, they do not hesitate in admitting it.

R1,484 R1,180 Discovery Miles 11 800 Save R304 (20%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most existing arch dams have been designed for seismic loading by static methods involving the use of seismic coefficients. Although there are no known examples of arch dams which have been seriously damaged by earthquakes, the need for more realistic seismic analyses is now well recognized, not only for new dams but especially in the context of the safety evaluation of existing dams. Fortunately, with the finite element method, engineers have a powerful tool for modeling the complex geometry and the nonlinear material behavior of a dam. However, there is still a major complication in the analysis procedure, namely the interaction of the dam with the reservoir and with the foundation during an earthquake. Interaction is a wave propagation problem involving transmitting boundaries. The State of the Art in engineering practice is to neglect wave propagation by modeling the water as incompressible and the foundation as massless. More advanced analysis methods using compressible water and foundation with mass have been available for some time. However, these methods are restricted to linear models, because they work in the frequency domain. On the other hand, there are also advanced nonlinear models for dams, but they can only be used in the time domain, usually with simple transmitting boundaries. In this report, which is based on an a doctoral thesis, rigorous transmitting boundaries in the time domain are developed which permit combining compressible water with n- linear dam behavior. The new numerical model is based on a systems-theory approach.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the U.S.-Austria Joint Seminar on Stochastic Structural Mechanics held on May 4 and 5, 1987. The general theme of the two-day program was the applications of probability and statistics to structural mechanics. Within this general theme a great variety of subject matters were covered, ranging from analytical and computational algorithms to specific problems in different branches of engineering. The format of the bi-national seminar with limited attendance permitted ample time for presentation and discussion. The discussion was als6 contributed by several participants of another bi-national seminar, the U.S.-Japan Joint Seminar on Stochastic Approaches in Earthquake Engineering, which followed immediately on May 6 and 7, 1987. The scheduling of the two seminars back-to-back enhanced greatly the exchange among the experts in engineering stochastics from the three nations. The Joint Seminar was organized according to the U.S.-Austria Cooperative Science Program established in 1984. We are indebted to the following government agencies and organizations for financial assistance, including the National Science Foundation, and the Florida Atlantic University Foundation in the United States, and Fonds zur Forderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung, Land Tirol, Bundeswirtschaftskammer, Bundesministerium flir Wissenschaft und Forschung, and Osterreichische Forschungsgemeinschaft in Austria. Most credits, however, must be accorded to each of the authors whose contributions were the very basis of any success we might be able to claim. Our special thanks are due to Mrs.
