Mattel Co. celebrated the 25th anniversary of its diecast toy cars,
Hot Wheels, in 1993. They were an instant success in 1968 and they
continue to be loved by children and collectors alike. The 686
wonderful color photographs in this new book cover nearly every
casting from the first car through the 1999 model year. They
provide a complete visual guide for collectors. In addition, there
is a listing of the many variations to help collectors sort through
the vast and rapidly growing world of Hot Wheels. The scope of Hot
Wheels collecting is international as collectors can be found
throughout the world. It is enjoyed by people of all ages. This
book will expand their knowledge, interest, and enjoyment of
collecting Hot Wheels.
The Hawker Hunter is one of Britain's classic post-war jet
aircraft. Initially introduced in 1954 as a swept-wing, transonic,
single-seat day interceptor, it rapidly succeeded the
first-generation jet fighters in RAF service such as the Gloster
Meteor (see Flight Craft 13) and the de Havilland Venom. Powered by
the then newly developed Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet, the Hunter's
performance transformed the RAF's day fighter squadrons from the
mid-1950s until the advent of the English Electric Lightning from
the early 1960s (see Flight Craft 11). Even then, as successively
improved variants of the type were produced with increasingly more
capable engines and expanded fuel capacity, the Hunter successfully
transitioned into a strike/ground attack fighter-bomber and fighter
reconnaissance platform. Two-seat variants were developed for
training and other secondary roles with the RAF and the Royal Navy
and a few remained in use until 2001, albeit with specialised MoD
Test and Evaluation units - well over forty years after the type's
initial introduction. Hunters were also famously used by two RAF
display teams, the 'Black Arrows', who looped a record-breaking
twenty-two Hunters in formation, and later the 'Blue Diamonds' as
well as the Royal Navy's 'Blue Herons'. The Hunter saw combat
service with the RAF in a range of conflicts including the Suez
Crisis as well as various emergencies in the Middle East and Far
East. The Hunter was also widely exported, serving with many
foreign air forces, in which it also saw active service, which
unfortunately lies outside the scope of this particular
publication. Almost 2,000 Hunters were manufactured by Hawker
Siddeley Aviation, as well as being produced under licence overseas
and will remain one of the UK's most iconic aircraft designs of all
time.
The increasing appearance of vertical milling machines in model
engineers' and other small workshops has brought the versatility of
this type of machine to the notice of a large and growing group of
potential users, but until the first edition of this book was
published in 1977 there was little available guidance for the
average amateur or small user. This third revised edition includes
descriptions of many of the very wide range of operations possible
with photographed examples, plus information on machines,
accessories, cutters, chucks, requirements and methods of
work-holding.
The techniques of depositing a thin metallic layer on an object for
decoration, corrosion protection, electrical conductivity, wear
resistance and so on have been known for many years but have been
developed and improved to a remarkable extent in the second half of
this century. This book sets out to discuss the principles and
practice of those forms of plating most suited to the amateur and
small workshop, using relatively simple and inexpensive equipment
to produce results virtually undetectable from work carried out by
major plating concerns. Jack Poyner, a professional involved in all
forms of plating for many years, is also a keen model engineer able
to recognise the dividing line between what his average fellow
enthusiast would consider practical and worthwhile and what is
really better left to experts in the field. The result is a really
useful and practical book, which will be of value to both amateur
and light industrial users in many diverse fields.
