A veteran math educator reveals the hidden fascinations of geometry and why this staple of math education is important. If you remember anything about high school geometry class, it's probably doing proofs. But geometry is more than axioms, postulates, theorems, and proofs. It's the science of beautiful and extraordinary geometric relationships--most of which is lost in high school classrooms where the focus is on the rigor of logically proving those relationships. This book will awaken readers to the appeal of geometry by placing the focus squarely on geometry's visually compelling features and intrinsic elegance. Who knew that straight lines, circles, and area could be so interesting? Not to mention optical illusions. So get out the rulers, compasses, or even a software program, and discover geometry for the first time.

This book discusses how to design "good" geometric puzzles: two-dimensional dissection puzzles, polyhedral dissections, and burrs. It outlines major categories of geometric puzzles and provides examples, sometimes going into the history and philosophy of those examples. The author presents challenges and thoughtful questions, as well as practical design and woodworking tips to encourage the reader to build his own puzzles and experiment with his own designs. Aesthetics, phychology, and mathematical considerations all factor into the definition of the quality of a puzzle.

'The collection contains many delightful and enjoyable problems that are either original or taken from old books, which are no longer easily accessible. I especially like the detailed solutions, which make it clear that the author has carefully re-examined all the old problems and often discovered that the previously published solutions were incomplete. Some problems are best solved with the help of a computer, and can serve as original exercises in computer programming. The book provides an enjoyable read, and should not be missing in the library of any metagrobologist.'zbMATHDefinition of metagrobolize: puzzle, mystify; puzzle out. Hence, metagrobology is the study of puzzles and metagrobologist an expert in such study. David Singmaster is possibly the world's best known metagrobologist. He gained prominence in the 1980s with a booklet on how to solve the Rubik's Cube. This book is a collection of over 200 problems that David Singmaster has composed since 1987. Some of the math problems have appeared in his various puzzle columns for BBC Radio and TV, Canadian Broadcasting, Focus (the UK popular science magazine), Games and Puzzles, the Los Angeles Times, Micromath, the Puzzle a Day memo pad and the Weekend Telegraph. While some of these are already classics, many of the puzzles have not been published elsewhere previously.Puzzle enthusiasts of all ages will find here arithmetic problems, properties of digits; monetary problems; alpha-metics; Diophantine problems; magic figures; sequence problems; logical problems; geometric problems; physics problems; combinatorial problems; geographic problems; calendar problems; clock problems; dissection problems and verbal problems. Can you solve it? Are you smarter than a metagrobologist? Check out Alex Bellos's Monday Puzzle on The Guardian as he features two sequence puzzles from the book.
Challenge your brain at home with these enjoyable puzzles. Specially compiled to provide the most deadly Su Doku challenge, this is the only volume for Su Doku enthusiasts who need a puzzle that really tests their mettle. Prepare yourself for the toughest Su Doku challenge there is. These diabolically difficult Ultimate Killer Su Doku puzzles will really put your brainpower to the test as you 'warm up' with the 100 Deadly Killer puzzles before steeling yourself to take on the 100 Extra Deadly Su Dokus. Are you ready for the challenge? Not for the faint-hearted. The puzzles use the same 9x9 grid as a regular Su Doku, but have an extra mathematical element that multiplies the challenge. The aim is not only to complete every row, column and cube so that it contains the digits 1 to 9, but also to make sure that the outlined sections, called cages, add up to the number given in each cage. Warning: Not suitable for amateur puzzlers!
Just when you thought it was safe to pick up a pencil Killer Su Doku is based on the original Su Doku grid, with the same rules and numbers--1 to 9--but with an added deadly twist. This time there is an element of arithmetic involved and there are few, if any, clues. The aim is to not only complete every row, column, and cube so that it contains the digits 1 to 9, but to also fill in the outlined cubes so they add up to the same number. Hints to solve the puzzle are hidden in the joined squares where only one combination of numbers applies. In the case of joined squares, if the printed number is 3, it should be 1 and 2 that go into the squares. Likewise, in the case of three joined squares, if the printed number is 6, the only combination possible is 1, 2, and 3. To add one final fiendish level, each puzzle also has a time worked out by its Japanese creators so you can try to beat the clock.

In 2008, November 23-28, the workshop of "Classical Problems on Planar Polynomial Vector Fields " was held in the Banff International Research Station, Canada. Called "classical problems", it was concerned with the following: (1) Problems on integrability of planar polynomial vector fields. (2) The problem of the center stated by Poincare for real polynomial differential systems, which asks us to recognize when a planar vector field defined by polynomials of degree at most n possesses a singularity which is a center. (3) Global geometry of specific classes of planar polynomial vector fields. (4) Hilbert's 16th problem. These problems had been posed more than 110 years ago. Therefore, they are called "classical problems" in the studies of the theory of dynamical systems. The qualitative theory and stability theory of differential equations, created by Poincare and Lyapunov at the end of the 19th century, had major developments as two branches of the theory of dynamical systems during the 20th century. As a part of the basic theory of nonlinear science, it is one of the very active areas in the new millennium. This book presents in an elementary way the recent significant developments in the qualitative theory of planar dynamical systems. The subjects are covered as follows: the studies of center and isochronous center problems, multiple Hopf bifurcations and local and global bifurcations of the equivariant planar vector fields which concern with Hilbert's 16th problem. The book is intended for graduate students, post-doctors and researchers in dynamical systems. For all engineers who are interested in the theory of dynamical systems, it is also a reasonable reference. It requires a minimum background of a one-year course on nonlinear differential equations. |
