Gathered from the author's over 80 years of experience with horses
and riders, this book features useful information about training
both, in an easy-to-use and easy-to-carry format. A MUST READ for
anyone interested in the well-schooled horse.
All too often, dressage books attempt to cover the entire breadth
of the discipline within their pages, giving short shrift to any
one level. In Moving Freely Forward-the first volume in a
three-part series covering training, first, and second
level-Krister Swartz gets into the nitty-gritty of training level
dressage. In lively language and using analogies that bring the
overarching principles of correct riding to life, he breaks down
the fundamental skills and concepts needed for training level into
pieces that every rider can grasp. A USDF 'L' graduate with
distinction, he explains what the judge is looking for at training
level, how she arrives at the score for each movement, and what
qualities determine each collective score. In an informative
lunging primer, he demystifies this essential art, dissecting the
techniques that a skilled lunger takes for granted. Finally, in a
section that will be invaluable for competitors who must often work
on their own, he walks the reader through each training level test,
giving concrete advice that will help the rider focus on the
essentials and ride proactively, resulting in a confident,
purposeful test. Miranda Ottewell's illustrations bring essential
principles of riding to life, and illuminate the way the
biomechanics of horse and rider function together to achieve the
ideal we all recognize when we see a horse and rider in harmony.
This scarce antiquarian book is a selection from Kessinger
Publishing's Legacy Reprint Series. Due to its age, it may contain
imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed
pages. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we
have made it available as part of our commitment to protecting,
preserving, and promoting the world's literature. Kessinger
Publishing is the place to find hundreds of thousands of rare and
hard-to-find books with something of interest for everyone
My aim with this book was twofold. I wanted a book that could be
kept with your tack as a handy reference and to give easy,
understandable information that all can make good use of. This book
is about having the chance to try a better way to understand riding
and training. It covers most things people need to train themselves
and their horses. It goes through some simple to understand ideas
so everyone can try. More advanced understanding can come through
my other books or your own studies. I consider horses are the same,
when born, everywhere in the world. If a horse has a problem, man
put it there, therefore studying how past masters evolved
horsemanship is important. They have tried it all before and then
handed their understanding to us. There seems to be a lot of new
techniques and ways to train horses like "Horse Whispering,"
"Equine body language," "Parelli" and others. All this work has
been carried out before, and if people thought about it, most of it
people already do. It is good to understand all aspects of
horsemanship, from equestrian science to Classical Dressage, but it
is important to not lose sight of the art and passion for training
horses. I consider horse owners to be intelligent people who know
when something is right, but due to the confusion of so many
methods sometimes lose sight of where they're going. This book
gives all the tools needed to produce a horse that is enjoyable to
ride, whether your chosen discipline is dressage, show jumping,
eventing or just hacking. You don't need gadgets, just thought and
common sense. People who don't ride will find this interesting and
informative, helping them to understand those who do. Good riding
is not something that can only be carried by a few, but can be
achieved by all. This book is a needed guide to help people start
to understand and remind those that do about the true art of riding
and training.
For the truly stalwart sports fans, this short missive will surely
tweak whatever remote interest the reader might have in "out of the
box" sports. It is not the best spectator sport, but one, when
experienced, is addictive. Visit "base camp" once - at least by
reading if not in person There are other endurance riding books
which aptly explain the "how-to" of preparing for and completing a
ride. This, on the other hand, will assist in preparing a person
for the "everything else" of the sport - camping, planning,
companionship, or not, and so forth.
When Josie's best friends all head away from River County Texas for
summer vacation, she is left with two options; work at the cemetery
with her dad and have the most uncool summer ever or shovel manure
at the Walker ranch. Josie chooses the ranch, despite her fear of
horses. Josie finds a mentor in Nina, a kind-hearted Choctaw Native
American woman, who helps Josie discover her natural talent for
horse jumping. This ignites the jealousy of Gretchen Walker, the
boss's beauty queen daughter and skilled horseback rider who's not
used to anyone showing her up. When Josie's own mom is blinded to
Gretchen's devious ways and dazzling smiles, Josie thinks it might
be the worst summer of her life. Will Gretchen drive Josie away or
will she stand up for her herself and find her Stable Ground?
These have been my experiences these last eleven years of drug free
racing, i will share training, diet and treatments for the drug
free athlete as well as some inspiring and hart breaking stories. A
must have for all horse owners containing all of my treatments for
cut, sprains, bows, colds, hoof problems etc. If you ever wondered
if horses can still compete at the highest levels without race day
medications open these pages and find out. By following my program
you have a plan to train your own horse and make your dream come
true as it has for me.
This book is a must have if you are looking at buying a pony for
your small child or beginning your child in horse riding. Meredith
shares her knowledge on what to look for when buying a pony, tips
with training and ways to ensure your tiny tot's safety around
their ponies. It is aimed at very small children from a few months
to around 5 years old.
Prepping your horse for a first ride requires plenty of ground
work. Here are your step-by-step instructions. This book provides
simple and objective training for the unbroke horse, from
first-time bridling and saddling to sacking out, bridle work from
the ground, pre-mount work, and your (necessarily short) first
ride. You'll learn the proven methods of John Lyons, tips to keep
you safer, and tricks to save time. Today's the perfect day to get
started putting a proper foundation on your horse, a solid start
that'll pay big dividends for the rest of his life. If you began
your training in the round pen, this book outlines the next steps
If you haven't round penned your horse, you can still begin with
this book BUT round penning beforehand is highly recommended. We'll
get you into the saddle for a first ride -- and finish up with a
chapter designed to prep you the rider/trainer, for all future
rides, demonstrating specifically how to use your reins for
quicker, easier results with horses of all ages. A good ninety
percent of the issues I see at a typical riding clinic could have
been prevented if the rider knew a few simple rules about how to
hold (and release ) those reins. Developing a "good feel" for when
and how to pick up and drop those reins will make training easier
at all stages of your horse's life -- especially when astride a
young and nervous colt when clear communication is most paramount.
Finally, pinned to the tail of this book, you'll find "Cinchy
Horses." Should you find yourself training a youngster who's
especially goosey at the tightening of the cinch, you'll want this
"what to do" fix. Only you can judge whether your colt or filly is
ready for this material: Though not a mandatory prerequisite, round
penning your horse (using the methods of John Lyons) is the smart
thing to do before completing the material in this book. Ideally,
your horse is now relaxed around you, leads well, has been taught
to turn away from you as well as to face you (consistently keeping
two eyes on you), and is wholly desensitized to your hand and
various objects. At an absolute minimum, your horse must remain
calm and willing in most circumstances when being worked with
(today), is thoroughly "used to" being handled, and you must have
the ability to turn the horse toward you as well as away. You must
be able to lead your horse, he isn't head shy, and you can handle
his entire body, ears, and all four feet. If not, check out the
prerequisite work found in my book "Round Pen: First Steps to
Starting a Horse." This book is broken down into five "Days" or
sessions, each designed for you to take at a pace you set: Day One:
First-time bridling Day Two: Bridle work from the ground (hip and
shoulder control) Day Three: Sacking out and first saddling Day
Four: Pre-mount work up Day Five: First Ride Plus: "The Reins: 5
Tips to Improve Your Use" "Cinchy Horses" What this book does not
cover: It's loaded with early-stages training for the green horse -
but it does not cover elementary sacking out (again, see my book
"Round Penning: First Steps to Starting a Horse"), nor does it
offer training beyond the first few weeks after first saddling up.
It teaches you hip and shoulder control from the ground, how to
bridle and saddle up for the first time and what you need to do to
take the first ride - which will necessarily be a short one. It
gives you pointers as to how you should further your training
(beyond the parameters of this book) but it does not cover "riding
training" (turning, stopping, speed control, etc.) beyond lessons
recommended for your first dozen or so "rides." If you're going to
be the first person to sit on your colt, don't you want to do
everything possible to assure yourself of success? Use the Lyons
methods described in this book to build a rock solid foundation
You'll save tons of time and aggravation in the future if you take
the time to do it right today.
The book is an insight into the life of Polocrosse from its early
beginnings in 1948 at Fort Victoria and covers 60 years of
development through turbulent times to be one of the leading
nations in the sport. It recollects all the characters that played
their part through different clubs and brings out the humour,
frustrations and determination that made this small turbulent
country a nation to be reckoned with. It digs deep into the past in
search of where it all began before Australia gave the modern sport
its name and follows through with the sequence of nations joining
the global family of Polocrosse. An easy read and with a lot of
photo's, it takes the older generation down memory lane whilst
giving the younger, a sense of belonging and a proud contributor of
a growing sport.
Another eBook and Paperback Nugget from The Soul of a Horse Best
selling author Joe Camp and his wife Kathleen were lucky enough to
stumble onto Monty Roberts Join-Up before their first horse ever
arrived, so that's where they began with each and every one of
their herd. And it made such an absolute difference for them to
establish relationship first and true leadership right from the
get-go. Their herd members are now all willing partners who never
stop trying. Stacy Westfall says the best thing she ever did for
her training is to do no training whatsoever until the relationship
is right. Come along with Joe and Kathleen as they learned what to
do, how to do it, and why. And why and how it very simply changed
everything with their horses. The stories you love and the
information you need will always be with you. What Readers and

Chris LeDoux was a rodeo icon, known for his ability to ride
bareback horses and a world championship. But Chris also had a
talent with a guitar and an ability to put the life and thoughts of
a rodeo cowboy into song. With the help of his family Chris started
selling audio-cassettes out of his rigging bag at rodeos, just as a
way to help pay his way down the road. Little did he or anyone else
know that after he hung up his bareback rigging and stowed the
rigging bag, that he would become a country music sensation, "Gold
Buckle Dreams: The Life and Times of Chris LeDoux" tells not only
of Chris's life growing up and on into rodeo, but is has been
expanded to include his life after rodeo. Although Chris LeDoux and
his music had a big following in rodeo, it was not until Garth
Brooks mentioned LeDoux in a song, that the rest of the world
discovered the man. When his career ended in rodeo, LeDoux found a
second round of fame in the music world, where he gained an
international following. Unfortunately his life ended prematurely,
the legend and music of Chris LeDoux live on.
"The Rodeo Road" offers twenty short stories that portray a rodeo
cowboy's career from kids' rodeos through competition on the
professional rodeo circuit. From fifteen years participation as a
rodeo contestant the author brings to life the people and places
that he knew while traveling the rodeo road. Although the names and
places have been changed, the stories are mined from the author's
own experiences and ring true to what most people could expect if
they went rodeoing. Meet the kids that develop their skills at home
on the ranch riding a "cowboy-engineered" bucking barrel for
practice and then hold a winter rodeo in the barnyard on a dark
freezing night. Travel halfway across Kansas to win a check and get
hung up in a stirrup, all on the same ride. Get to know,
personally, all nine saddle bronc riders as they compete at the big
rodeo in Camwalla. Feel the thrill of "strapping your wood" on the
greatest bronc of all time. Experience such diverse yet historic
events as Houston's Livestock Show and Rodeo and Milburn's "Oldest
Rodeo." Slip into a pair of well-worn boots and feel the weight of
400 cubes under the hood as you and Sid knife through the Colorado
mountains on an 800 mile run competing at three rodeos in three
days. Best of all, share in the grueling test of ten go-rounds at
the National Finals Rodeo as you ride with Blain Connor when he
takes on the top fifteen bronc riders in the world and challenges
championship bucking stock in a quest to see what he's made of.
You're on the rodeo road and you are eating, sleeping, traveling
and competing with the men and animals of rodeo as they really are.
The aged horse has so much to offer: wisdom, experience, and
confidence, to name a few attributes. Helping him grow old in good
health and with dignity is a gift every horse owner hopes to be
able to bestow. In this expanded and updated edition of Aging
Horse, Dr. Getty covers all the elements you need to know about
feeding your mature horse to foster his longevity and prolong his
usefulness.
As it is with people, so it is with horses. There is what you see
on the surface, and then there is what is churning below. Lizzy's
good work ethic, and a desire to learn, will take her only so far.
To go beyond the books, beyond the riding lessons, she will need
courage. Why? Wild Child. He is beauty coupled with power, but mean
as a rattlesnake. He triggers reactions in everyone who sees him;
envy; ambition; and fear. And he is her responsibility. But not her
only challenge. Some rattlesnakes are two-legged. She will find
some of her teachers in unlikely places she could never have
imagined. She will develop that special quality known among
horsemen as "feel." So the journey of The Dressage Chronicles
continues. Put on your helmet.
Ever want to consider intelligence beyond schools? Read Up, Down,
and Over, and follow one person's journey to learn deep listening
to hear horses and their stories. In so doing, she came to know her
own truths. Without making a test of the levels of intelligence,
horses teach us about ourselves and our connection with nature. Up,
Down, and Over takes you for a ride among horses and their stories,
so that we, too, begin to hear truths about the simple constancy of
existence-if we will listen.
A book of unique, mysterious short stories with twist endings set
in modern-day or the old West.
