111 Places in County Durham You Shouldn't Miss will unveil Durham's
secret depths and lesser-known delights, allowing it to step out
from the shadow of its spectacular, UNESCO-listed cathedral and its
highly-ranked university. This small, hilly city has its gems, but
the county's historic towns (Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle,
Newton Aycliffe), by the water (Hartlepool, Seaham) and nestled
away in its tiniest villages (Kelloe, Tow Law) are home to Durham's
true hidden wonders. Discover the mysterious sea caves at Blackhall
Rocks, or wander up Nose's Point to Blast Beach. Traverse Durham
city's wonkiest staircase, or make your own mind up about the
county's most controversially-designed estate. Marvel at Killhope's
working Waterwheel, and uncover the county's famous coal mining
past. Unearth disused collieries and quarries reclaimed by the
overgrowth surrounding them. Spot what's left of a stone boar at
Barnard Castle. Hear the real story behind Hartlepool's most
baffling local legend, and try to stand atop a haunted copse... if
you dare.

San Francisco is an iconic and symbolic city. But only when you
look beyond the picture-postcards of the Golden Gate Bridge and the
quaint cable cars do you realise that the city's most interesting
stories are not the Summer of Love, the Beats or even the latest
gold rush in Silicon Valley.*BR**BR*Hidden San Francisco is a
guidebook like no other. Structured around the four major themes of
ecology, labour, transit and dissent, Chris Carlsson peels back the
layers of San Francisco's history to reveal a storied past: behind
old walls and gleaming glass facades lurk former industries, secret
music and poetry venues, forgotten terrorist bombings, and much
more. Carlsson delves into the Bay Area's long prehistory as well,
examining the region's geography and the lives of its inhabitants
before the 1849 Gold Rush changed everything, setting in motion the
clash between capital and labour that shaped the modern
city.*BR**BR*From the perspective of the students and secretaries,
longshoremen and waitresses, Hidden San Francisco uncovers dozens
of overlooked, forgotten and buried histories that pulse through
the streets and hills even today, inviting the reader to see
themselves in the middle of the ongoing, everyday process of making
history together.
The three long-distance walks described in this book - the Suffolk
Coast Path, the Stour and Orwell Walk and the Sandlings Walk - link
together to provide a comprehensive and varied circuit of the
entire Suffolk Heritage Coast. The Suffolk Coast Path stretches
along the coast between Lowestoft and Landguard Fort, close to
Felixstowe in the south, a total distance of 60 miles (97km)
depending on whether beach walking or inland options are followed.
The Stour and Orwell Walk continues where the Suffolk Coast Path
ends, starting at Landguard Point threading for 40 mile (64km)
around the estuaries of the Stour and Orwell rivers to finish at
Cattawade, close to the Essex border. The Sandlings Walk (59
miles/94.5km) explores the heathland region that lies immediately
inland from the Suffolk coast. With the exception of the first
stage, between Ipswich and Woodbridge, the route of the Sandlings
Walk lies entirely within the confines of the Suffolk Coast &
Heaths AONB. With a unique landscape of cliffs, marshes, dunes and
shingle beaches, and rare plants and birdlife galore, there is much
to attract anyone seeking interesting day walks or longer multi-day
itineraries.
In Dark Star Safari the wittily observant and endearingly irascible
Paul Theroux takes readers the length of Africa by rattletrap bus,
dugout canoe, cattle truck, armed convoy, ferry, and train. In the
course of his epic and enlightening journey, he endures danger,
delay, and dismaying circumstances.
Gauging the state of affairs, he talks to Africans, aid workers,
missionaries, and tourists. What results is an insightful
meditation on the history, politics, and beauty of Africa and its
people, and "a vivid portrayal of the secret sweetness, the hidden
vitality, and the long-patient hope that lies just beneath the
surface" (Rocky Mountain News). In a new postscript, Theroux
recounts the dramatic events of a return to Africa to visit
Zimbabwe.
