Haunted New Mexico - Ghosts and Strange Phenomena of the Land of Enchantment (Paperback): Christine M. Rogel Haunted New Mexico - Ghosts and Strange Phenomena of the Land of Enchantment (Paperback)

R434 R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Save R80 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is a mystical quality to the land and sky in New Mexico. Places with long histories, such as New Mexico, breed superstition, carrying the memories, stories, and beliefs of those who have passed before. The state is such a notoriously superstitious place that real estate agencies post notices about whether a house is "truly" haunted, with pseudo-legal discussions about the need to disclose this information publicly. There is a haunted State Monument in Lincoln County, and a lovelorn ghost wanders through one of the state's national parks. There are ghosts who are friendly and fearsome. Stories that have become fables, and others that are fully believed. Haunted New Mexico will occasionally ask you to suspend belief, showing those cracks between what is real and imagined.

Waking Up in Eden - In Pursuit of an Impassioned Life on an Imperiled Island (Paperback): Lucinda Fleeson Waking Up in Eden - In Pursuit of an Impassioned Life on an Imperiled Island (Paperback)
Lucinda Fleeson
R396 R334 Discovery Miles 3 340 Save R62 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like so many of us, Lucinda Fleeson wanted to escape what had become a routine life. So, she quit her big-city job, sold her suburban house, and moved halfway across the world to the island of Kauai to work at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Imagine a one-hundred-acre garden estate nestled amid ocean cliffs, rain forests, and secluded coves. Exotic and beautiful, yes, but as Fleeson awakens to this sensual world, exploring the island's food, beaches, and history, she encounters an endangered paradise the Hawaii we don't see in the tourist brochures.
Native plants are dying at an astonishing rate Hawaii is called the Extinction Capital of the World and invasive species (plants, animals, "and" humans) have imperiled this Garden of Eden. Fleeson accompanies a plant hunter into the rain forest to find the last of a dying species, descends into limestone caves with a paleontologist who deconstructs island history through fossil life, and shadows a botanical pioneer who propagates rare seeds, hoping to reclaim the landscape. Her grown-up adventure is a reminder of the value of choosing passion over security, individuality over convention, and the pressing need to protect the earth. And as she witnesses the island's plant renewal efforts, she sees her own life blossom again.

111 Places in Essex That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback): Ed Glinert 111 Places in Essex That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback)
Ed Glinert
R356 Discovery Miles 3 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Good evening. I'm from Essex, in case you couldn't tell." Thus spoke the inimitable punk poet of the flat lands, Ian Dury, in 1977. Few other parts of England have so distinctive an identity, sent up by a hundred comedians since the 1990 birth of Essex Man, epitomised by the rise of the 'Mockney' radio celeb, and incarcerated through their hideous offspring in TV's The Only Way is Essex. It's not just an accent, it's a way of life, a culture shaped by the Diaspora from London generation after generation, the lure of the sea and powerful Thames estuary, the encroaching of the waters from innumerable creeks and inlets, the dream seaside resort of Southend, the longing for the most succulent of seafood indulgences, the delicious countryside of copses and boughs painted by Constable, but also the threat of invasion by hostile forces repelled by Britain's most formidable forts. It's Essex. You can tell.

Guidebook to a principal north-south long-distance walking route through eastern France, traversing the Vosges and the Haut-Jura plateau along the GR5/GR53. The 687km (427-mile) waymarked path traverses the entire length of the Vosges, and then climbs up onto the plateau of the Haut-Jura before dropping down to Nyon on the shores of Lake Geneva. The GR5 is one of the great walking routes across Europe, crossing the continent from the Dutch coast to the Mediterranean, and the route described here is the central section (518km) from Schirmeck down to Lake Geneva. In addition, the GR53 in the Northern Vosges from Wissembourg to Schirmeck (169km) is described as an offshoot of the GR5 that allows walkers to complete the entire chain of the Vosges. The route is presented in 11 chapters, which in turn are broken into short sections of a few hours each, allowing for a flexible itinerary and easy route planning. There are also suggestions for shorter circular routes making use of sections of the GR53/GR5, as well as an overview of other long-distance routes in the region. A summary of local history, plants and wildlife and delicacies can be found in the introduction and appendices offer details of facilities on route and full accommodation listings. Two further Cicerone guidebooks cover the remaining sections of the GR5; 'The GR5 Trail - Benelux and Lorraine', and 'The GR5 Trail' which covers the route from Lac Leman to the Mediterranean.

World-class museums and archaeological sites may be the first things that come to mind when you think of Greece, but the country is home to both old and new. Take Europe's oldest city, for example: Athens has a youthful vibe and buzzing nightlife, where upmarket restaurants stand alongside traditional grill eateries and old-school ouzeris jostle with the trendy cocktail bars of up-and-coming urban neighbourhoods. Meanwhile Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, seduces visitors with its array of Byzantine churches and vibrant contemporary art scene. But it's not all about the cities. Kissed by three seas and stretching from the barren peaks of the northern Pindos to the sunny vineyards of Attica and the Peloponnese, the rural landscapes of mainland Greece are stunningly diverse. Outdoor adventurers can trek the dramatic Vikos and Lousios gorges and climb the craggy peaks of Mount Olympos.
