Reverberations of Nazi Violence in Germany and Beyond explores the
complex and diverse reverberations of the Second World War after
1945. It focuses on the legacies that National Socialist violence
and genocide perpetrated in Europe continue to have in
German-speaking countries and communities, as well as among those
directly affected by occupation, terror and mass murder.
Furthermore it explores how those legacies are in turn shaped by
the present. The volume also considers conflicting, unexpected and
often dissonant interpretations and representations of these
events, made by those who were the witnesses, victims and
perpetrators at the time and also by different communities in the
generations that followed. The contributions, from a range of
disciplinary perspectives, enrich our understanding of the
complexity of the ways in which a disturbing past continues to
disrupt the present and how the past is in turn disturbed and
instrumentalized by a later present.
Touts is a historical account of the troubled formation of a
colonial labor market in the Gulf of Guinea and a major
contribution to the historiography of indentured labor, which has
relatively few reference points in Africa. The setting is West
Africa's largest island, Fernando Po or Bioko in today's Equatorial
Guinea, 100 kilometers off the coast of Nigeria. The Spanish ruled
this often-ignored island from the mid-nineteenth century until
1968. A booming plantation economy led to the arrival of several
hundred thousand West African, principally Nigerian, contract
workers on steamships and canoes. In Touts, Enrique Martino traces
the confusing transition from slavery to other labor regimes,
paying particular attention to the labor brokers and their
financial, logistical, and clandestine techniques for bringing
workers to the island. Martino combines multi-sited archival
research with the concept of touts as "lumpen-brokers" to offer a
detailed study of how commercial labor relations could develop,
shift and collapse through the recruiters' own techniques, such as
large wage advances and elaborate deceptions. The result is a
pathbreaking reconnection of labor mobility, contract law, informal
credit structures and exchange practices in African history.

Clement Attlee's Labour governments of 1945 to 1951 but had its
origins in the Liberal government of forty years earlier. The

While the coerced human experiments are notorious among all the
atrocities under National Socialism, they have been marginalised by
mainstream historians. This book seeks to remedy the
marginalisation, and to place the experiments in the context of the
broad history of National Socialism and the Holocaust. Paul
Weindling bases this study on the reconstruction of a victim group
through individual victims' life histories, and by weaving the
victims' experiences collectively together in terms of different
groupings, especially gender, ethnicity and religion, age, and
nationality. The timing of the experiments, where they occurred,
how many victims there were, and who they were, is analysed, as are
hitherto under-researched aspects such as Nazi anatomy and
executions. The experiments are also linked, more broadly, to major
elements in the dynamic and fluid Nazi power structure and the
implementation of racial policies. The approach is informed by
social history from below, exploring both the rationales and
motives of perpetrators, but assessing these critically in the
light of victim narratives.

first Indian Muslim missionaries arrived in London, until 1944.

When the Bolshevik Revolution broke out in October 1917, much of
Central Asia was still ruled by autonomous rulers such as the Emir
of Bukhara and the Khan of Khiva. By 1920 the khanates had been
transformed into People's Republics. In 1924, Stalin re-drew the
frontiers of the region on ethno-linguistic lines creating, amongst
other statelets, the Soviet Socialist Republic of Uzbekistan - the
land of the Uzbeks. But the Turkic Uzbeks were not the only
significant ethnic group within the new Uzbekistan's frontiers. The
Persian-speaking Tajiks formed a considerable part of the
population. This book describes how, often in the teeth of Uzbek
opposition, the Tajiks gained, first an autonomous oblast
(administrative region) within Uzbekistan, then an autonomous
republic, and finally, in 1929, the status of a full Soviet Union
Republic. Once the Tajiks had been granted a territory of their
own, they began to strive for a national identity and to create
national pride. Their new government had not only to survive the
civil war that followed the revolution but then to build an
entirely new country in an immensely inhospitable terrain. New
frontiers had to be wrested from neighbours, and a new cultural
identity, 'national in form but socialist in content', had to be
created, which was to be an example to other Persian speakers in
the region. Paul Bergne has produced the first documentation of how
the idea of a Tajik state came into being and offers a vivid
history of the birth of a nation.

developed in Germany in the wake of World War One, analyzing its
role in the end of the Weimar Republic and its impact on the Nazi

Lara Douds examines the practical functioning and internal
political culture of the early Soviet government cabinet, the
Council of People's Commissars (Sovnarkom), under Lenin. This study
elucidates the process by which Sovnarkom's governmental
decision-making authority was transferred to Communist Party bodies
in the early years of Soviet power and traces the day-to-day
operation of the supreme state organ. The book argues that
Sovnarkom was the principal executive body of the early Soviet
government until the Politburo gradually usurped this role during
the Civil War. Using a range of archival source material, Lara
Douds re-interprets early Soviet political history as a period
where fledging 'Soviet' rather than simply 'Communist Party' power
was attempted, but ultimately failed when pressures of Civil War
and socio-economic dislocation encouraged the centralising and
authoritarian rather than democratic strand of Bolshevism to

of governance by looking at the frequency of meetings, types of
business discussed, processes of decision-making and the
administrative backdrop, as well as the key personalities of

executive power from state to party in this period, which resulted

'leadership by the party gives way to administration by its
organs'.
