The studies collected in this volume were written in honour of
Johann Cook, emeritus professor of the Department of Ancient
Studies at Stellenbosch University. They cover a variety of
subjects including the translation of Hebrew expressions into
Greek, the reception of LXX texts in various contexts, topics
related to wisdom and the LXX versions of sapiential literature,
Ben Sira as a scribe of the Second Temple period, themes in the
works of Philo and Josephus and the references to Sumkhos ben
Joseph in rabbinic writings. The contributions therefore focus on
the Septuagint, early Jewish sages and ancient scriptures. They
present the results of original research, identify new lines and
topics of inquiry and make novel contributions to existing
insights.
The English Standard Version is an "essentially literal"
translation of the Bible in contemporary English. It is ideally
suited for personal reading, for public worship, for in-depth
study, and for Scripture memorization. ESV Compact Bible combines
classic portability and improved readability. This Bible will be a
favorite of anyone who likes to take God's Word wherever they go:
from daily commuters to faithful students, world travelers to busy
moms.
This bestselling textbook surveys the grand narrative of the Bible,
demonstrating how the biblical story forms the foundation of a
Christian worldview. The second edition has been thoroughly
revised.
Praise for the First Edition
"Much recent scholarship has emphasized the narrative quality of
Scripture. This book takes that insight and brings it to life,
enabling even the beginner to grasp the sense of Scripture as a
single great story--a drama in which we are all invited to play a
part. I am delighted to see solid scholarship made easily
accessible in this splendid fashion."--N. T. Wright, University of
St. Andrews
"A masterful job of presenting the Bible as an organic whole. All
who want to enrich their understanding of the account of God's
redemptive plan will benefit from reading this book."--Tremper
Longman III, Westmont College
