Scouting & Recollections The 3rd Parkstone Scout Group, 104 (Paperback): Chris Harris Scouting & Recollections The 3rd Parkstone Scout Group, 104 (Paperback)
Chris Harris
R203 Discovery Miles 2 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour has a claim to fame as the birthplace of the worldwide scout movement. It was in August 1907 that Robert Baden Powell held an experimental camp for 20 boys on the Island, following which scout troops were soon being formed all over the country. The 3rd Parkstone troop, which came into being in 1931, was effectively a scion of the 4th Poole troop which dated from 1917. This book tells the story of 3rd Parkstone from its origins as part of 4th Poole through to the final cub meeting before closure in 2006. Throughout its existence the group leaders maintained detailed log books and photograph albums of the various activities, and these have formed the basis of this lavishly illustrated account. It tells how the group continued to function during the dark days of the Second World War, and also shows that 3rd Parkstone kept up to date with changing lifestyles during the later years of the 20th century. We are sure that this book will bring back happy memories for anyone who has been involved with the cub or scout movement in days gone by - and especially for anyone who was fortunate enough to have belonged to 3rd Parkstone.

Practising Social Work Research - Case Studies for Learning (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Rick Csiernik, Rachel Birnbaum Practising Social Work Research - Case Studies for Learning (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Rick Csiernik, Rachel Birnbaum
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Research skills are as critical to social work practitioners as skills in individual and group counselling, policy analysis, and community development. Adopting strategies similar to those used in direct practice courses, this book integrates research with social work practice, and in so doing promotes an understanding and appreciation of the research process. This second edition of Practising Social Work Research comprises twenty-three case studies that illustrate different research approaches, including quantitative, qualitative, single-subject, and mixed methods. Six are new to this edition, and examine research with First Nations, organizing qualitative data, and statistics. Through these real-life examples, the authors demonstrate the processes of conceptualization, operationalization, sampling, data collection and processing, and implementation. Designed to help the student and practitioner become more comfortable with research procedures, Practising Social Work Research capitalizes on the strengths that social work students bring to assessment and problem solving.

Benjamin Rene Jordan
R962 Discovery Miles 9 620 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this illuminating look at gender and Scouting in the United States, Benjamin Rene Jordan examines how in its founding and early rise, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) integrated traditional Victorian manhood with modern, corporate-industrial values and skills. While showing how the BSA Americanized the original British Scouting program, Jordan finds that the organization's community-based activities signaled a shift in men's social norms, away from rugged agricultural individualism or martial primitivism and toward productive employment in offices and factories, stressing scientific cooperation and a pragmatic approach to the responsibilities of citizenship. By examining the BSA's national reach and influence, Jordan demonstrates surprising ethnic diversity and religious inclusiveness in the organization's founding decades. For example, Scouting officials' preferred urban Catholic and Jewish working-class immigrants and ""modernizable"" African Americans and Native Americans over rural whites and other traditional farmers, who were seen as too ""backward"" to lead an increasingly urban-industrial society. In looking at the revered organization's past, Jordan finds that Scouting helped to broaden mainstream American manhood by modernizing traditional Victorian values to better suit a changing nation.

John Coleman
R542 Discovery Miles 5 420 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a true and accurate account of treasonous conduct by the British and American governments: An account of how their citizens are deceived by policies provoking actions that are totally detrimental to the well-being of their citizens. Thoroughly researched, the book provides a great deal of hitherto unpublished information and throws new light on such diverse operations as the Gulf War and the Bolshevik Revolution. The chapter on covert actions throws new light on the murder of Martin Luther King, Pope John Paul 1, and other notables marked for elimination. Diplomacy By Deception will forever alter your perception of the two leading governments in Western civilization. This is an excellent companion book to the Committee of 300 by the same author.

Making Clubs Work - A practical guide to creating successful clubs, societies and other membership organisations (Paperback):... Making Clubs Work - A practical guide to creating successful clubs, societies and other membership organisations (Paperback)
Brad Parkes
R471 Discovery Miles 4 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As anyone knows who has tried to organise any sort of group, from a book club to the National Trust, from a scout troop to a business networking group, it is an enterprise fraught with challenges - acquiring members, involving members, retaining members, keeping the organisation focused, functioning and vibrant - none of this is easy. Brad Parkes has been involved with membership organisations at the highest levels for a number of years, and has developed a number of tried and tested strategies and approaches which, when applied, will help any membership organisation to flourish. A skilled and much sought-after speaker, Brad presents his ideas in a lively and attractive way, using a threefold approach - through the story of a young man, Billy, just starting out on his career, his boss and mentor Alex, and a cafe called Archie's; through case studies and real-life examples; and, finally, through suggestions, hints and tips to apply in order to a membership organisation successfully. It is Brad's great belief that membership organisations play an incalculably valuable role in providing individuals with a sense of belonging, a place and a purpose, and that, in today's increasingly fragmented society, it is crucial that membership organisations of all sorts and sizes survive and thrive.

Confronting the Blue Revolution - Industrial Aquaculture and Sustainability in the Global South (Paperback, New): Saidul Islam Confronting the Blue Revolution - Industrial Aquaculture and Sustainability in the Global South (Paperback, New)
Saidul Islam
R1,124 Discovery Miles 11 240 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Like the Green Revolution of the 1960s, a "Blue Revolution" has taken place in global aquaculture. Geared towards quenching the appetite of privileged consumers in the global North, it has come at a high price for the South: ecological devastation, displacement of rural subsistence farmers, and labour exploitation. The uncomfortable truth is that food security for affluent consumers depends on a foundation of social and ecological devastation in the producing countries. In Confronting the Blue Revolution, Md Saidul Islam uses the shrimp farming industry in Bangladesh and across the global South to show the social and environmental impact of industrialized aquaculture. The book pushes us to reconsider our attitudes to consumption patterns in the developed world, neoliberal environmental governance, and the question of sustainability.

The Stories We Are - An Essay on Self-Creation (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): William Randall The Stories We Are - An Essay on Self-Creation (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
William Randall
R1,428 Discovery Miles 14 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

From time to time we all tend to wonder what sort of "story" our life might comprise: what it means, where it is going, and whether it hangs together as a whole. In The Stories We Are, William Lowell Randall explores the links between literature and life and speculates on the range of storytelling styles through which people compose their lives. In doing so, he draws on a variety of fields, including psychology, psychotherapy, theology, philosophy, feminist theory, and literary theory. Using categories like plot, character, point of view, and style, Randall plays with the possibility that we each make sense of the events of our lives to the extent that we weave them into our own unfolding novel, as simultaneously its author, narrator, main character, and reader. In the process, he offers us a unique perspective on features of our day-to-day world such as secrecy, self-deception, gossip, prejudice, intimacy, maturity, and the proverbial "art of living." First published in 1995, this second edition of The Stories We Are includes a new preface and afterword by the author that offer insight into his argument and evolution as a scholar, as well as an illuminating foreword by Ruthellen Josselson.

Leadership from the margins - Women and civil society organizations in Argentina, Chile and El Salvador (Paperback, New):... Leadership from the margins - Women and civil society organizations in Argentina, Chile and El Salvador (Paperback, New)
Serena Cosgrove
R1,152 Discovery Miles 11 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Women have experienced decades of economic and political repression across Latin America, where many nations are built upon patriarchal systems of power. However, a recent confluence of political, economic, and historical factors has allowed for the emergence of civil society organizations (CSOs) that afford women a voice throughout the region. Leadership from the Margins describes and analyzes the unique leadership styles and challenges facing the women leaders of CSOs in Argentina, Chile, and El Salvador. Based on ethnographic research, Serena Cosgrove's analysis offers a nuanced account of the distinct struggles facing women, and how differences of class, political ideology, and ethnicity have informed their outlook and organizing strategies. Using a gendered lens, she reveals the power and potential of women's leadership to impact the direction of local, regional, and global development agendas.

Jobs and Justice - Fighting Discrimination in Wartime Canada, 1939-1945 (Paperback, New): Carmela Patrias Jobs and Justice - Fighting Discrimination in Wartime Canada, 1939-1945 (Paperback, New)
Carmela Patrias
R1,108 Discovery Miles 11 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Despite acute labour shortages during the Second World War, Canadian employers--with the complicity of state officials--discriminated against workers of African, Asian, and Eastern and Southern European origin, excluding them from both white collar and skilled jobs. Jobs and Justice argues that, while the war intensified hostility and suspicion toward minority workers, the urgent need for their contributions and the egalitarian rhetoric used to mobilize the war effort also created an opportunity for minority activists and their English Canadian allies to challenge discrimination.Juxtaposing a discussion of state policy with ideas of race and citizenship in Canadian civil society, Carmela K. Patrias shows how minority activists were able to bring national attention to racist employment discrimination and obtain official condemnation of such discrimination. Extensively researched and engagingly written, Jobs and Justice offers a new perspective on the Second World War, the racist dimensions of state policy, and the origins of human rights campaigns in Canada.

Fields of Learning - The Student Farm Movement in North America (Hardcover): Laura Sayre, Sean Clark Fields of Learning - The Student Farm Movement in North America (Hardcover)
Laura Sayre, Sean Clark; Foreword by Frederick L. Kirschenmann
R1,158 Discovery Miles 11 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Where will the next generation of farmers come from? What will their farms look like? Fields of Learning: The Student Farm Movement in North America provides a concrete set of answers to these urgent questions, describing how, at a wide range of colleges and universities across the United States and Canada, students, faculty, and staff have joined together to establish on-campus farms as outdoor laboratories for agricultural and cultural education. From one-acre gardens to five-hundred-acre crop and livestock farms, student farms foster hands-on food-system literacy in a world where the shortcomings of input-intensive conventional agriculture have become increasingly apparent. They provide a context in which disciplinary boundaries are bridged, intellectual and manual skills are cultivated together, and abstract ideas about sustainability are put to the test. Editors Laura Sayre and Sean Clark have assembled a volume of essays written by pioneering educators directly involved in the founding and management of fifteen of the most influential student farms in North America. Arranged chronologically, Fields of Learning illustrates how the student farm movement originated in the nineteenth century, gained ground in the 1970s, and is flourishing today -- from the University of California--Davis to Yale University, from Hampshire College to Central Carolina Community College, from the University of Montana to the University of Maine.

The Ages of Voluntarism - How we got to the Big Society (Paperback, New): Matthew Hilton, James McKay The Ages of Voluntarism - How we got to the Big Society (Paperback, New)
Matthew Hilton, James McKay
R840 Discovery Miles 8 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In May 2010, Britain's new Coalition government embarked on its journey to the Big Society. But how did we reach this point? Politicians and commentators have long bemoaned the supposed decline of civic life, fretting about its health and its future. In fact, the real story of voluntarism over the last hundred years has not been decline, but constant evolution and change. Whether we use the terms charity, philanthropy, civil society, non-governmental organisations, the third sector or the Big Society, voluntary endeavour is one of the most vibrant and dynamic areas of British public life. The senior, established and exciting new scholars featured in this collection show how the voluntary sector's role in society, and its relationship with the state, has constantly adapted to its surroundings. They have raised new agendas, tackled old problems in new ways, acted as alternatives to statutory provision and as catalysts for further government action. Voluntary groups have emerged out of citizens' concerns, independent of government and yet willing to work with politicians of all persuasions. By surveying the sheer extent and diversity of the sector since the start of the First World War, this volume demonstrates that voluntarism not only continues to thrive, but is also far larger than any political agenda that may be imposed upon it.

Geoffrey Ashe
R448 Discovery Miles 4 480 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

An exploration of the origins, influences, and legacy of the scandalous Hell-Fire Clubs of the 18th century and beyond * Reveals the club's origins in the work of Rabelais and the magical practices of John Dee and how their motto, "Do What You Will," deeply influenced Aleister Crowley * Explores the cross-fertilization of liberty and libertinage within these clubs that influenced both U.S. and French Revolutions * Examines the debaucherous activities and famous members of many Hell-Fire Clubs, including Sir Francis Dashwood's Monks of Medmenham Mention the Hell-Fire Clubs and you conjure up an image of aristocratic rakes cutting a swath through the village maidens. Which is true, but not the whole truth. The activities of these clubs of upper-class Englishmen revolved around not only debauchery but also blasphemy, ritual, quasi-magical pursuits, and political intrigue. Providing a history of these infamous clubs, Geoffrey Ashe reveals their origins in the work of Francois Rabelais and the activities of John Dee. He shows how the Hell-Fire Clubs' anything-goes philosophy of "Do what you will"--also Aleister Crowley's famous motto--and community template were drawn directly from Rabelais. The author looks at the very first Hell-Fire Club, founded by Philip, Duke of Wharton, in 1720 and then at the Society of the Dilettanti, a fraternity formed in 1732. Ashe examines the life, travels, and influences of Sir Francis Dashwood, founding member of the Society of the Dilettanti and the scandalous Permissive Society at Medmenham, also known as the Monks of Medmenham. He also explores other Hell-Fire clubs the movement inspired throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland, including the violence-prone Mohocks and the Appalling Club. He shows how many illustrious figures of the day were members of these societies, such as Lord Byron. He also examines the rumors that Benjamin Franklin was a member, an allegation that can be neither confirmed nor denied. Exploring the political and magical ideas that fueled this movement, the author shows how the cross-fertilization of liberty and libertinage within the Hell-Fire Clubs went on to influence both the U.S. and French revolutions, as well as the hippie movement of the 1960s, the Church of Satan founded by Anton LaVey, and the motorcycle club known as the Hell's Angels. The legacy of the Hell-Fire Clubs continues to impact society, beckoning both elite and outsider to cast aside social norms and "do what you will."

Race, Resistance, and the Boy Scout Movement in British Colonial Africa (Paperback, New): Timothy H. Parsons Race, Resistance, and the Boy Scout Movement in British Colonial Africa (Paperback, New)
Timothy H. Parsons
R1,005 Discovery Miles 10 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Conceived By General. Sir Robert Baden-Powell as a way to reduce class tensions in Edwardian Britain, scouting evolved into an international youth movement. It offered a vision of romantic outdoor life as a cure for disruption caused by industrialization and urbanization. Scouting's global spread was due to its success in attaching itself to institutions of authority. As a result, scouting has become embroiled in controversies in the civil rights struggle in the American South, in nationalist resistance movements in India, and in the contemporary American debate over gay rights. In Race, Resistance, and the Boy Scout Movement in British Colonial Africa. Timothy Parsons uses scouting as an analytical tool to explore the tensions in colonial society. Introduced by British officials to strengthen their rule, the movement targeted the students, juvenile delinquents, and urban migrants who threatened the social stability of the regime. Yet Africans themselves used scouting to claim the rights of full imperial citizenship. They invoked the Fourth Scout Law, which declared that a scout was a brother to every other scout, to challenge racial discrimination. Parsons shows that African scouting was both an instrument of colonial authority and a subversive challenge to the legitimacy of the British Empire. His study of African scouting demonstrates the implications and far-reaching consequences of colonial authority in all its guises.

St. Pauli - Another Football is Possible (Paperback): Carles Vinas, Natxo Parra St. Pauli - Another Football is Possible (Paperback)
Carles Vinas, Natxo Parra; Translated by Luke Stobart; Foreword by Deniz Naki 1
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

**Longlisted for The Telegraph Sports Book Awards 2021 - Football Book of the Year** FC St. Pauli is a football club unlike any other. Encompassing music, sport and politics, its fans welcome refugees, fight fascists and take a stand against all forms of discrimination. This book goes behind the skull and crossbones emblem to tell the story of a football club rewriting the rulebook. Since the club's beginnings in Hamburg's red-light district, the chants, banners and atmosphere of the stadium have been dictated by the politics of the streets. Promotions are celebrated and relegations commiserated alongside social struggles, workers' protests and resistance to Nazism. In recent years, people have flocked from all over the world to join the Black Bloc in the stands of the Millerntor Stadium and while in the 1980s the club had a small DIY punk following, now there are almost 30,000 in attendance at games with supporters across the world. In a sporting landscape governed by corporate capitalism, driven by revenue and divorced from community, FC St. Pauli demonstrate that another football is possible.

David T Beito
R1,419 Discovery Miles 14 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, more Americans belonged to fraternal societies than to any other kind of voluntary association, with the possible exception of churches. Despite the stereotypical image of the lodge as the exclusive domain of white men, fraternalism cut across race, class, and gender lines to include women, African Americans, and immigrants. Exploring the history and impact of fraternal societies in the United States, David Beito uncovers the vital importance they had in the social and fiscal lives of millions of American families. Much more than a means of addressing deep-seated cultural, psychological, and gender needs, fraternal societies gave Americans a way to provide themselves with social-welfare services that would otherwise have been inaccessible, Beito argues. In addition to creating vast social and mutual aid networks among the poor and in the working class, they made affordable life and health insurance available to their members and established hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the elderly. Fraternal societies continued their commitment to mutual aid even into the early years of the Great Depression, Beito says, but changing cultural attitudes and the expanding welfare state eventually propelled their decline. |David Beito's book establishes the enormous impact of fraternal societies on the social lives and fiscal circumstances of millions of Americans between 1890 and 1967. In addition to creating vast social and mutual aid networks for the poor and the working class, fraternal organizations offered insurance policies to members and established hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the elderly.

Animal Revolution - Changing Attitudes Towards Speciesism (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed): Richard D. Ryder Animal Revolution - Changing Attitudes Towards Speciesism (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed)
Richard D. Ryder
R1,367 Discovery Miles 13 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

When Richard Ryder coined the term 'speciesism' over two decades ago, the issue of animal rights was very much a minority concern that had associations with crankiness. Today, the animal rights movement is well-established across the globe and continues to gain momentum, with animal experimentation for medical research high on the agenda and very much in the news. This pioneering book - an historical survey of the relationship between humans and non-humans - paved the way for these developments. Revised, updated to include the movement's recent history and available in paperback for the first time, and now introducing Ryder's concept of 'painism', Animal Revolution is essential reading for anyone who cares about animals or humanity. Dr Richard D. Ryder is a psychologist, ethicist, historian and political campaigner. He is also a past chairman of the RSPCA. His other books include Victims of Science: The Use of Animals in Research, The Political Animal: The Conquest of Speciesism and Animal Welfare and the Environment (editor). As Mellon Professor, he taught Animal Welfare at Tulane University.

Virtual Activism - Sexuality, the Internet, and a Social Movement in Singapore (Paperback): Robert Phillips Virtual Activism - Sexuality, the Internet, and a Social Movement in Singapore (Paperback)
Robert Phillips
R867 Discovery Miles 8 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In Virtual Activism: Sexuality, the Internet, and a Social Movement in Singapore, cultural anthropologist Robert Phillips provides a detailed, yet accessible, ethnographic case study that looks at the changes in LGBT activism in Singapore in the period 1993-2019. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted with activist organizations and individuals, Phillips illustrates key theoretical ideas - including illiberal pragmatics and neoliberal homonormativity - that, in combination with the introduction of the Internet, have shaped the manner by which LGBT Singaporeans are framing and subsequently claiming rights. Phillips argues that the activism engaged in by LGBT Singaporeans for governmental and societal recognition is in many respects virtual. His analysis documents how the actions of activists have resulted in some noteworthy changes in the lives of LGBT Singaporeans, but nothing as grand as some would have hoped, thus indexing the "not quite" aspect of the virtual. Yet, Virtual Activism also demonstrates how these actions have encouraged LGBT Singaporeans to fight even harder for their rights, signalling the "possibilities" that the virtual holds.

Playing Out of Bounds - "Belonging" and the North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament (Paperback): Yuka Nakamura Playing Out of Bounds - "Belonging" and the North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament (Paperback)
Yuka Nakamura
R1,049 Discovery Miles 10 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Playing Out of Bounds investigates the North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament (NACIVT), an annual event that began in the 1930s in the streets of Manhattan and now attracts 1200 competitors from the U.S. and Canada. Its two key features are the 9-man game, where there are nine instead of the usual six volleyball players on the court, and the fact that player eligibility is limited to "100% Chinese" and Asian players, as defined in the tournament rules. These rules that limit competitors to specific ethno-racial groups is justified by the discrimination that Chinese people faced when they were denied access to physical activity spaces, and instead played in the alleyways and streets of Chinatowns. Drawing on interviews, participant-observation, and analysis of websites and tournament documents, Playing Out of Bounds explores how participants understand and negotiate their sense of belonging within this community of volleyball players and how membership within and the boundaries of this community are continually being (re)defined. This identity/community building occurs within a context of anti-Asian racism, growing numbers of mixed race players, and fluidity of what it means to be Canadian, American, Chinese, and Asian.

Immigration and the Politics of Welfare Exclusion - Selective Solidarity in Western Democracies (Paperback): Edward A. Koning Immigration and the Politics of Welfare Exclusion - Selective Solidarity in Western Democracies (Paperback)
Edward A. Koning
R1,308 Discovery Miles 13 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Why do some governments try to limit immigrants' access to social benefits and entitlements while others do not? Through an in-depth study of Sweden, Canada, and the Netherlands, Immigration and the Politics of Welfare Exclusion maps the politics of immigrants' social rights in Western democracies. To achieve this goal, Edward A. Koning analyzes policy documents, public opinion surveys, data on welfare use, parliamentary debates, and interviews with politicians and key players in the three countries. Koning's findings are three-fold. First, the politics of immigrant welfare exclusion have little to do with economic factors and are more about general opposition to immigration and multiculturalism. Second, proposals for exclusion are particularly likely to arise in a political climate that incentivizes politicians to appear "tough" on immigration. Finally, the success of anti-immigrant politicians in bringing about exclusionary reforms depends on the response of the political mainstream, and the extent to which immigrants' rights are protected in national and international legal frameworks. A timely investigation into an increasingly pressing subject, Immigration and the Politics of Welfare Exclusion will be essential reading for scholars and students of political science, comparative politics, and immigration studies.
