Non-International Armed Conflicts in International Law (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Yoram Dinstein Non-International Armed Conflicts in International Law (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Yoram Dinstein
R1,060 Discovery Miles 10 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This dispassionate analysis of the legal implications of non-international armed conflicts explores the rules regulating the conduct of internal hostilities, as well as the consequences of intervention by foreign States, the role of the UN Security Council, the effects of recognition, State responsibility for wrongdoing by both Governments and insurgents, the interface with the law of human rights and the notion of war crimes. The author addresses both conceptual and specific issues, such as the complexities of 'failing' States or the recruitment and use of child soldiers. He makes use of the extensive case law of international courts and tribunals, in order to identify and set out customary international law. Much attention is also given to the contents of available treaty texts. This new updated edition takes into account the latest events in terms of the practice of States, judicial pronouncements and UN Security Council resolutions.

Toni Erskine
R1,501 Discovery Miles 15 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Can institutions (in the sense of formal organizations) bear duties and be ascribed blame in the same way that we understand individual human beings to be morally responsible for actions? The idea of the "institutional moral agent" is critically examined in the guise of states, transnational corporations, the UN, NATO and international society in the context of some of the most critical and debated issues and events in international relations, including the Kosovo Campaign, development aid, and genocide in Rwanda.

F. Carr, Theresa Callan
R2,845 Discovery Miles 28 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the end of the Cold War, international institutions have had to rise to challenges of instability and insecurity in Europe. Fergus Carr and Theresa Callan examine the changing nature of European security, cooperation and conflict. A key theme is the development of the new European security architecture and the roles of NATO, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the European Union and the United Nations as security providers in contemporary Europe.

Praxis Internationaler Organisationen - Vertragswandel und voelkerrechtlicher Ordnungsrahmen (German, Hardcover, 1. Aufl.... Praxis Internationaler Organisationen - Vertragswandel und voelkerrechtlicher Ordnungsrahmen (German, Hardcover, 1. Aufl. 2016)
Christopher Peters
R2,718 Discovery Miles 27 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An Agenda for People - UNFPA Through Three Decades (Paperback): Nafis Sadik An Agenda for People - UNFPA Through Three Decades (Paperback)
Nafis Sadik
R1,095 Discovery Miles 10 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The achievements and challenges of the world's largest multilateral donor population programs In the thirty years since the United Nations Population Fund was founded, overall population growth rates have slowed, infant and maternal mortality have been reduced, and women have achieved improved access to reproductive health services. Yet, a multitude of problems remain, including the aging of Western European populations and the growth of others in the Third World, the impact of AIDS, and increases in migration and refugees. An Agenda for People examines the past achievements as well as the current and future challenges of the world's largest multilateral donor population programs. Through essays by experts in the field of development, this book tackles a series of probing questions. How has the Fund evolved and built global support? How have the major international conferences on population and environments shaped the global population agenda? What is the relationship between reproductive rights and human rights? What are the links between population and resource use and abuse? And how does the Fund help to integrate impoverished populations into national development strategies? This book provides an invaluable assessment of the state of world population programs and a fascinating look into the future of community development. Contributors include Tevia Abrams, John Caldwell, Sylvie Cohen, Rebecca Cook, Mahmoud Fathalla, Noeleen heyzer, Don Hinrichsen, Stafford Mousky, Mohammad Nizamuddin, Fred Sai, Sara Sems, Steven W. Sinding, Jyoti Shankar Singh, and Bradman Weerakoon.

The Architecture of Global Governance - An Introduction to the Study of International Organizations (Paperback): James P.... The Architecture of Global Governance - An Introduction to the Study of International Organizations (Paperback)
James P. Muldoon Jr
R1,691 Discovery Miles 16 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In our world of massive and rapid change, international organizations are at the vanguard of a worldwide movement to build a new world order based on the principles of global governance. The international system established in the wake of World War II is coming undone, argues James Muldoon, and the cornerstones of 20th century international relations--the Westphalian nation-state system, the Wilsonian principles of collective security and self-determination, and the faith in technological and scientific progress--are being undermined by the forces of globalization and fragmentation that characterize the post-Cold War world. At center stage of this dramatic transition to a new global order is a throng of international organizations which must contend with the increasing disarray of international relations and still manage the many latent and new problems on the international agenda. Muldoon skillfully guides the uninitiated through the tangled world of international organizations, pointing out along the way important events and key factors which have shaped their creation and evolution. This new and timely textbook makes the esoteric subject of international organizations accessible and very engaging for a new generation of students and scholars. Appraising the dynamics of systemic transformation and the challenges posed by expanding global interdependence, The Architecture of Global Governance puts international organizations in their proper context and restores the study of international organizations as a vibrant and critical field of contemporary international relations.

The Work of the UN in Cyprus - Promoting Peace and Development (Paperback, 1st ed. 2001): O. Richmond, J. Ker-Lindsay The Work of the UN in Cyprus - Promoting Peace and Development (Paperback, 1st ed. 2001)
O. Richmond, J. Ker-Lindsay
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The United Nations has rarely been given a fair hearing with regard to its work in Cyprus. Despite competing demands for its limited resources being challenged by the local parties and at the mercy of contradictory political directions at the international level, the UN has actually achieved more than is generally realized. This is the first volume to critically appraise all the major areas of the UN's peacekeeping, peacemaking, and peace building activities in Cyprus.

Rebuilding War-Torn States - The Challenge of Post-Conflict Economic Reconstruction (Hardcover): Graciana del Castillo Rebuilding War-Torn States - The Challenge of Post-Conflict Economic Reconstruction (Hardcover)
Graciana del Castillo
R2,269 Discovery Miles 22 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Post-conflict economic reconstruction is a critical part of the political economy of peacetime and one of the most important challenges in any peace-building or state-building strategy. After wars end, countries must negotiate a multi-pronged transition to peace: Violence must give way to public security; lawlessness, political exclusion, and violation of human rights must give way to the rule of law and participatory government; ethnic, religious, ideological, or class/caste confrontation must give way to national reconciliation; and ravaged and mismanaged war economies must be reconstructed and transformed into functioning market economies that enable people to earn a decent living.
Yet, how can these vitally important tasks each be successfully managed? How should we go about rehabilitating basic services and physical and human infrastructure? Which policies and institutions are necessary to reactivate the economy in the short run and ensure sustainable development in the long run? What steps should countries take to bring about national reconciliation and the consolidation of peace? In all of these cases, unless the political objectives of peacetime prevail at all times, peace will be ephemeral, while policies that pursue purely economic objectives can have tragic consequences. This book argues that any strategy for post-conflict economic reconstruction must be based on five premises and examines specific post-conflict reconstruction experiences to identify not only where these premises have been disregarded, but also where policies have worked, and the specific conditions that have influenced their success and failure.

A Guide to the Contemporary Commonwealth (Paperback): W. McIntyre A Guide to the Contemporary Commonwealth (Paperback)
W. McIntyre
R1,502 Discovery Miles 15 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This lucid guide meets the need, so often expressed in the 1990s, for an up-to-date assessment of the contemporary Commonwealth. It has a succinct section on its historical background and gives more attention than any previous works to symbols and to the 'People's Commonwealth' of voluntary organizations, sports and business. It highlights critical questions of balance that have emerged between the relative roles of governments and official agencies, voluntary associations, and private business.

International Development Co-operation - Selected Essays by H. W. Singer on Aid and the United Nations System (Paperback, 1st... International Development Co-operation - Selected Essays by H. W. Singer on Aid and the United Nations System (Paperback, 1st ed. 2001)
D. Shaw; H. Singer
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As one of the most pioneering development economists, Hans Singer has stimulated many of the ideas that have engaged the attention of the world community for several decades. Not only has he helped to form an understanding of the problems of developing countries, but he has also shown what might be done to solve them. This collection brings together for the first time key essays on the issues underlying food aid and the development of the UN. These are grouped into five areas: postwar development experience; reform of the United Nations; debt and debt servicing; structural adjustment and stabilization; and food aid.

The United States and Human Security (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001): Edward Newman The United States and Human Security (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001)
Edward Newman; Edited by O. Richmond
R2,846 Discovery Miles 28 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The United Nations and Human Security highlights and analyzes the changing peace and security challenges faced by the United Nations in an evolving international environment that is no longer solely characterized by states and inter-state security. The authors, who comprise both scholars and UN practitioners, cover a wide range of pressing current issues - including refugees, international tribunals, the promotion of democracy, ethics, regional organizations, humanitarian intervention, conflict prevention and peacekeeping - that form a cutting-edge and controversial security agenda.

War and Peace in Mozambique (Paperback, 1st ed. 1998): Stephen Chan War and Peace in Mozambique (Paperback, 1st ed. 1998)
Stephen Chan; Edited by Moises Venancio
R4,317 Discovery Miles 43 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book traces the end of hostilities and the often acrimonious, sometimes naive, but always laboured negotiations towards peace and elections in Mozambique. There is careful examination of the many international factors involved from the covert intervention of South Africa, the reaction of one African state, the role of the United Nations and that of humanitarian and religious groups. The lessons for conflict resolution and peacekeeping for Africa and beyond are discussed.

International Information - Documents, Publications, and Electronic Information of International Governmental Organizations,... International Information - Documents, Publications, and Electronic Information of International Governmental Organizations, 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Peter I Hajnal
R4,913 Discovery Miles 49 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Publications of international governmental organizations (IGOs) are among the most difficult documents for librarians to acquire, organize, and use. This revised work examines the documentation, publications, and computerized information services of major IGOs, such as the United Nations, the European Union, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the League of Nations, the International Development Research Center, and the G-7. Special attention is given to the consequences of recent institutional restructuring and retrenchment. The book covers institutions, resources, and processes. Chapters discuss the organizational and functional characteristics of IGOs; examine their available resources, including documents now available through electronic sources; and explore the role of the private sector and institutions outside the IGOs in providing access to IGO information. Hajnal also discusses collection development and reference and information work. This authoritative, up-to-dat

Tom Woodhouse, Robert Bruce, Malcolm Dando
R2,864 Discovery Miles 28 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations was commemorated in 1995 with a number of conferences and publications which assessed the history and contemporary role of this paramount international organisation. This book is the result of a meeting of scholars and specialists who wished to further understanding of the challenges faced by the United Nations in its efforts to intervene in post-cold war conflict. In particular the experiences in Bosnia, Somalia and in Rwanda, where UN peacekeepers seemed powerless to act in the face of acts of genocide, gross violations of human rights and the widespread suffering caused by war, makes such an analysis timely and important.

My Voice Is My Weapon - Music, Nationalism, and the Poetics of Palestinian Resistance (Paperback): David A McDonald My Voice Is My Weapon - Music, Nationalism, and the Poetics of Palestinian Resistance (Paperback)
David A McDonald
R903 Discovery Miles 9 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In My Voice Is My Weapon, David A. McDonald rethinks the conventional history of the Palestinian crisis through an ethnographic analysis of music and musicians, protest songs, and popular culture. Charting a historical narrative that stretches from the late-Ottoman period through the end of the second Palestinian intifada, McDonald examines the shifting politics of music in its capacity to both reflect and shape fundamental aspects of national identity. Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation. The first of its kind, this book offers an in-depth ethnomusicological analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, contributing a performative perspective to the larger scholarly conversation about one of the world's most contested humanitarian issues.

Shemlan - A History of the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 1998): James Craig Shemlan - A History of the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 1998)
James Craig
R3,061 Discovery Miles 30 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shemlan, a small, once unknown village in the hills overlooking Beirut, became notorious throughout the Middle East when Bertram Thomas chose it as the location for the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies (MECAS) in 1947. The knowledge that a western government was taking pains to teach its citizens Arabic and inform them of Arab history, society and religion made the Arabs suspicious. The success of MECAS in producing specialists who were the envy of other governments produced doubt and anxiety. The power of MECAS to attract British but also foreign diplomats and businessmen should have made it a profitable enterprise; instead there was constant penny-pinching and reluctance to invest. In retrospect it looks like an excellent idea developed by improvisation through its early troubles which was then allowed to die in its prime. Was it yet another example of a British invention unexploited?

Some Corner of a Foreign Field - Intervention and World Order (Paperback, 1st ed. 1998): Roger Williamson Some Corner of a Foreign Field - Intervention and World Order (Paperback, 1st ed. 1998)
Roger Williamson
R2,857 Discovery Miles 28 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When is a war not a war? Under what circumstances is humanitarian intervention by the international community justified? In what circumstances can a state legitimately put at risk the lives of members of its armed forces? These are some of the questions raised through the essays contained in Some Corner of a Foreign Field . The authors consider the main ethical and political arguments surrounding the subject of intervention, and, between them, cover a wide range of areas, coming to focus on international institutions and international law, domestic and political viewpoints, humanitarian considerations, the applicability of the just war theory, and the role of public opinion and the media. The result is a book that throws open new doors and extends the range of discussion within the ongoing debate on defence and disarmament.

John Idriss Lahai
R1,644 Discovery Miles 16 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a timely examination of the Ebola pandemic in Sierra Leone from four different standpoints: 1) a social standpoint that focuses on the way in which the vulnerable Sierra Leonian population viewed the pandemic in light of their cultural beliefs, memories of past wars and narratives and actions of the government; 2) a good governance standpoint that exposes lapses in health governance and the general unpreparedness of the government and international community to deal with the outbreak; 3) a scientific research standpoint that looks at the role played by the Sierra Leone's Lassa Fever Research Laboratories as a main hub for the investigation, monitoring and evaluation of communicable diseases in the Mano River Union countries; and 4) an international politics standpoint that examines the development of a new bio-security international apparatus involving a wide range of international actors and institutions.

In a stunning follow-up to his well-received The Evolution of UN Peacekeeping , William Durch looks at the peacekeeping efforts of the United Nations as they took shape during the present decade. El Salvador, Angola, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Cambodia and the former Yugoslavia all harboured explosive political situations that tested, and in some cases continue to test, the limits of the United Nations ability to keep peace in a world where the political situation is constantly changing. Anyone interested in international politics and peacekeeping will want to read Durch's newest.

A. Green, A. Matthias
R2,847 Discovery Miles 28 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are increasingly recognised as playing a significant role in the health sector in developing countries. This book examines the background to the growth both in the sector and interest in it, the strengths and weaknesses of NGOs and the arguments for and against their use for different aspects of the health sector. It focuses particularly on the relationship between the State and non-governmental organizations and the issues critical to the development of policies towards the sector.

Europe - Toward 2001 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996): P. Coffey Europe - Toward 2001 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996)
P. Coffey
R3,024 Discovery Miles 30 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

THEBACKGROUND Why a book on Europe - Toward the Year 200l? There are two principal reasons why a European should embark upon such a hazardous enterprise. First, when the Treaty on European Union (popularly known as the Maastricht Treaty, and, hereafter referred to as the Treaty in this introduction) was signed in February 1992, it was agreed that the heads of government of the EU Member States would assemble, in 1996, to examine its workings. This meeting will be known as the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC). Second, by the end of the century, it is certain that arrangements will have been made for the admission of some countries of Central and Eastern Europe into the European Union (EU). Consequently, even with or without the holding of the IGC, it will be urgently necessary to reform some of the Community's policies - notably the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the structural poliCies which are linked, for example, 2 Europe - Toward 2001 with the Regional and Social Funds - before these countries become members. Failure to do this could result in bankruptcy for the EU. Of almost equal importance is the reform of the institutions and the actual workings of the Community. Already with 12 Member States, it was difficult enough to manage things on a daily basis. Now, as more countries join the Union, things could literally grind to a stop. Thus, changes in this area are indispensable.

NGOs, States and Donors - Too Close for Comfort? (Paperback): Michael Edwards, David Hulme NGOs, States and Donors - Too Close for Comfort? (Paperback)
Michael Edwards, David Hulme
R1,439 Discovery Miles 14 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last decade the use of non-governmental agencies (NGOs) to promote development and reduce poverty and hunger has become a major feature of development policy. Donors have poured funds into NGOs, governments have allocated them major responsibilities and their number and size has grown. Has this popularity helped them to solve the problems of poverty or has it changed them so that they are now part of the 'development industry' that they used to criticize?;This book provides the most detailed study available of the ways in which NGO-State-Donor relationships have changed the role that NGOs play in development. Its papers are introduced by two international experts on the topic and the contributors are leading academics and senior practitioners. The picture that emerges from the general reviews and detailed case studies of African, Asian and Latin American NGOs, is a complex one. However, the authors conclude that there is much evidence that NGOs are 'losing their roots' - getting closer to donors and governments and more distant to the poor and disempowered who they seek to assist.

The Question of Namibia (Paperback, 1st ed. 1996): Laurent C. W Kaela The Question of Namibia (Paperback, 1st ed. 1996)
Laurent C. W Kaela
R1,491 Discovery Miles 14 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Following the Second World war, South Africa claimed that the League of Nations mandate to administer Namibia had lapsed with the dissolution of that organization, and that it was within its power to annex it. It rejected UN efforts to have the territory placed under its trusteeship. This marked the beginning of the intractable dispute over the international status and independence of Namibia. This book analyses the role of the international community through the UN and other organizations in the search for a settlement. It gives attention to the efforts of the Western Contact Group and the people of Namibia themselves, and shows how conditions for a settlement ultimately emerged. Finally, it outlines Namibia's major post-independence challenges.

UN Malaise - Power, Problems and Realpolitik (Paperback, 1st ed. 1995): Geoff Simons UN Malaise - Power, Problems and Realpolitik (Paperback, 1st ed. 1995)
Geoff Simons
R1,527 Discovery Miles 15 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the United Nations moves into its second half-century the international organization is beset by problems. It is increasingly suborned or ignored by the USA, pursuing its own global objectives. The UN is inadequately resourced and faces many other barriers erected by Washington and other powerful states. UN personnel are frequently accused of mismanagement, corruption and even the abuse of human rights. There is also the problem of how the UN should develop to best serve the real world community, not what the West usually means by the 'international community'. Finally, the 'other UN' (the IMF, the World Bank, GATT, etc), often working against the best spirit of the UN, should be considered. These problems are explored, leading to a 50-point reform agenda for the UN.
