Friedrich Waismann - Causality and Logical Positivism (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): B.F. McGuinness Friedrich Waismann - Causality and Logical Positivism (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
B.F. McGuinness
R4,060 Discovery Miles 40 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Friedrich Waismann (1896-1959) was one of the most gifted students and collaborators of Moritz Schlick. Accepted as a discussion partner by Wittgenstein from 1927 on, he functioned as spokesman for the latter's ideas in the Schlick Circle, until Wittgenstein's contact with this most faithful interpreter was broken off in 1935 and not renewed when exile took Waismann to Cambridge. Nonetheless, at Oxford, where he went in 1939, and eventually became Reader in Philosophy of Mathematics (changing later to Philosophy of Science), Waismann made important and independent contributions to analytic philosophy and philosophy of science (for example in relation to probability, causality and linguistic analysis). The full extent of these only became evident later when the larger (unpublished) part of his writings could be studied. His first posthumous work The Principles of Linguistic Philosophy (1965, 2nd edn.1997; German 1976) and his earlier Einfuhrung in das mathematische Denken (1936) have recently proved of fresh interest to the scientific community. This late flowering and new understanding of Waismann's position is connected with the fact that he somewhat unfairly fell under the shadow of Wittgenstein, his mentor and predecessor. Central to this book about a life and work familiar to few is unpublished and unknown works on causality and probability. These are commented on in this volume, which will also include a publication of new or previously scattered material and an overview of Waismann's life.

Heidegger, Metaphysics and the Univocity of Being (Hardcover, New): Philip Tonner Heidegger, Metaphysics and the Univocity of Being (Hardcover, New)
Philip Tonner
R4,633 Discovery Miles 46 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In "Heidegger, Metaphysics and the Univocity of Being", Philip Tonner presents an interpretation of the philosophy of Martin Heidegger in terms of the doctrine of the 'univocity of being'. According to the doctrine of univocity there is a fundamental concept of being that is truly predicable of everything that exists. This book explores Heidegger's engagement with the work of John Duns Scotus, who raised philosophical univocity to its historical apotheosis. Early in his career, Heidegger wrote a book-length study of what he took to be a philosophical text of Duns Scotus'. Yet, the word 'univocity' rarely features in translations of Heidegger's works. Tonner shows, by way of a comprehensive discussion of Heidegger's philosophy, that a univocal notion of being in fact plays a distinctive and crucial role in his thought. This book thus presents a novel interpretation of Heidegger's work as a whole that builds on a suggested interpretation by Gilles Deleuze in "Difference and Repetition" and casts a new light on Heidegger's philosophy, clearly illuminating his debt to Duns Scotus. "Continuum Studies in Continental Philosophy" presents cutting-edge scholarship in the field of modern European thought. The wholly original arguments, perspectives and research findings in titles in this series make it an important and stimulating resource for students and academics from across the discipline.

Nietzsche's Machiavellian Politics (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): D. Dombowsky Nietzsche's Machiavellian Politics (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
D. Dombowsky
R2,651 Discovery Miles 26 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this exciting new study, Don Dombowsky proposes that the foundation of Nietzsche's political thought is the aristocratic liberal critique of democratic society. But he claims that Nietzsche radicalizes this critique through a Machiavellian conversion, based on a reading of "The Prince," adapting Machiavellian "virtbliog-- "(the shaping capacity of the legislator), and immoralism (the techniques applied in political rule), and that, consequently, Nietzsche is better understood in relation to the political ideology of the neo-Machiavellian elite theorists of his own generation.

Polyphony Embodied - Freedom and Fate in Gao Xingjian's Writings (Hardcover, Digital original): Michael Lackner, Nikola... Polyphony Embodied - Freedom and Fate in Gao Xingjian's Writings (Hardcover, Digital original)
Michael Lackner, Nikola Chardonnens
R3,344 Discovery Miles 33 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like artists, important writers defy unequivocal interpretations. Gao Xingjian, winner of the Nobel Prize in literature, is a cosmopolitan writer, deeply rooted in the Chinese past while influenced by paragons of Western Modernity. The present volume is less interested in a general discussion on the multitude of aspects in Gao's works and even less in controversies concerning their aesthetic value than in obtaining a response to the crucial issues of freedom and fate from a clearly defined angle. The very nature of the answer to the question of freedom and fate within Gao Xingjian's works can be called a polyphonic one: thereare affirmative as well as skeptical voices. But polyphony, as embodied by Gao, is an even more multifaceted phenomenon. Most important for our contention is the fact that Gao Xingjian's aesthetic experience embodies prose, theater, painting, and film. Taken together, they form a Gesamtkunstwerk whose diversity of voices characterizes every single one of them.

Wittgenstein, Frazer and Religion (Hardcover): Brian R. Clack Wittgenstein, Frazer and Religion (Hardcover)
Brian R. Clack
R4,005 Discovery Miles 40 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Wittgenstein, Frazer and Religion expounds and analyses the argument of Wittgenstein's Remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough . It details the reasons for Wittgenstein's rejection of the intellectualist theory of religion, and suggests a new interpretation of his rival view of ritual. Denying that Wittgenstein's account is straightforwardly expressivist, the author builds his own interpretation on Wittgenstein's claim that magic is akin to metaphysics. In the course of the book, the author considers such matters as expressivism, 'perspicuous representation', the nature of human sacrifice, and Wittgenstein's cultural pessimism.

Niels Bohr's Complementarity - Its Structure, History, and Intersections with Hermeneutics and Deconstruction (Hardcover,... Niels Bohr's Complementarity - Its Structure, History, and Intersections with Hermeneutics and Deconstruction (Hardcover, 2011)
Makoto Katsumori
R2,654 Discovery Miles 26 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores the modern physicist Niels Bohr's philosophical thought, specifically his pivotal idea of complementarity, with a focus on the relation between the roles of what he metaphorically calls "spectators" and "actors." It seeks to spell out the structural and historical complexity of the idea of complementarity in terms of different modes of the 'spectator-actor' relation, showing, in particular, that the reorganization of Bohr's thought starting from his 1935 debate with Einstein and his collaborators is characterized by an extension of the dynamic conception of complementarity from non-physical contexts to the very field of quantum theory. Further, linked with this analysis, the book situates Bohr's complementarity in contemporary philosophical context by examining its intersections with post-Heideggerian hermeneutics as well as Derridean deconstruction. Specifically, it points to both the close affinities and the differences between Bohr's idea of the 'actor-spectator' relation and the hermeneutic notion of the relation between "belonging" and "distanciation."

Schizoanalytic Cartographies (Hardcover): Felix Guattari Schizoanalytic Cartographies (Hardcover)
Felix Guattari; Translated by Andrew Goffey
R3,919 R3,521 Discovery Miles 35 210 Save R398 (10%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Schizoanalytic Cartographies" represents Felix Guattari's most important later work and the most systematic and detailed account of his theoretical position and his therapeutic ideas. Guattari sets out to provide a complete account of the conditions of 'enunciation' - autonomous speech and self-expression - for subjects in the contemporary world. Over the course of eight closely argued chapters, he presents a breathtakingly new reformulation of the structures of individual and collective subjectivity. Based on research into information theory and new technologies, Guattari articulates a vision of a humanity finally reconciled with its relationship to machines. "Schizoanalytic Cartographies" is a visionary yet highly concrete work, providing a powerful vantage point on the upheavals of our present epoch, powerfully imagining a future 'post-media' era of technological development. This long overdue translation of this substantial work offers English-speaking readers the opportunity finally to fully assess Guattari's contribution to European thought.

Continuity and Change in the Development of Russell's Philosophy (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): P.J. Hager Continuity and Change in the Development of Russell's Philosophy (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
P.J. Hager
R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The general view of Russell's work amongst philosophers has been that repeat edly, during his long and distinguished career, crucial changes of mind on fun damental points were significant enough to cause him to successively adopt a diversity of radically new philosophical positions. Thus Russell is seen to have embraced and then abandoned, amongst others, neo-Hegelianism, Platonic re alism, phenomenalism and logical atomism, before settling finally on a form of neutral monism that philosophers have generally found to be incredible. This view of Russell is captured in C. D. Broad's famous remark that "Mr. Russell pro duces a different system of philosophy every few years . . . " (Muirhead, 1924: 79). Reflecting this picture of Russell continually changing his position, books and papers on Russell's philosophy have typically belonged to one of two kinds. Either they have concentrated on particular periods of his thought that are taken to be especially significant, or, accepting the view of his successive conversion to dis tinctly different philosophical positions, they have provided some account of each of these supposedly disconnected periods of his thought. While much good work has been done on Russell's philosophy, this framework has had its limitations, the main one being that it conceals the basic continuity behind his thought."

Critical Theory and Feeling - The Affective Politics of the Early Frankfurt School (Hardcover): Simon Mussell Critical Theory and Feeling - The Affective Politics of the Early Frankfurt School (Hardcover)
Simon Mussell
R2,337 Discovery Miles 23 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a unique and timely reading of the early Frankfurt School in response to the recent 'affective turn' within the arts and humanities. Resisting the overly rationalist tendencies of political philosophy, it argues that critical theory actively cultivates a powerful connection between thinking and feeling, and rediscovers a range of often neglected concepts that were of vital importance to the first generation of critical theorists, including melancholia, hope, (un)happiness, objects and mimesis. In doing so, it brings the dynamic work of Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Ernst Bloch and Siegfried Kracauer into conversation with more recent debates around politics and affect. An important intervention in the fields of affect studies and social and political thought, Critical theory and feeling shows that sensuous experience is at the heart of the Frankfurt School's affective politics. -- .

The Radical Humanism of Erich Fromm (Hardcover): K. Durkin The Radical Humanism of Erich Fromm (Hardcover)
K. Durkin
R3,296 Discovery Miles 32 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, shortlisted for the British Sociological Association's Philip Abrams Memorial Prize (2015), argues that Fromm is a vital and largely overlooked contribution to twentieth-century intellectual history, and one who offers a refreshingly reconfigured form of humanism that is capable of reintegrating explicitly humanist analytical categories and schemas back into social theoretical (and scientific) considerations.

The Moral Life: Essays in Honour of John Cottingham (Hardcover): N Athanassoulis, S Vice The Moral Life: Essays in Honour of John Cottingham (Hardcover)
N Athanassoulis, S Vice
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Few contemporary philosophers have made as wide-ranging and insightful a contribution to philosophical debate as John Cottingham. This collection brings together friends, colleagues and former students of Cottingham, to discuss major themes of his work on moral philosophy. Presented in three parts the collection focuses on the debate on partiality, impartiality and character; the role of emotions and reason in the good life; the meaning of a worthwhile life and the place of theistic considerations in it. The original contributions to this volume celebrate Cottingham's work by embracing and furthering his arguments and, at times, in the best spirit of philosophical engagement, challenging and confronting them. The volume concludes with Cottingham's specially commissioned responses to the contributions.

Sartre and Psychoanalysis - Existentialist Challenge to Clinical Metatheory (Hardcover, New): Betty Cannon Sartre and Psychoanalysis - Existentialist Challenge to Clinical Metatheory (Hardcover, New)
Betty Cannon
R1,730 Discovery Miles 17 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Betty Cannon is the first to explore the implications of Sartrean philosophy for the Freudian psychoanalytic tradition. Drawing upon Sartre's work as well as her own experiences as a practicing therapist, she shows that Sartre was a "fellow traveler" who appreciated Freud's psychoanalytic achievements but rebelled against the determinism of his metatheory.

The mind, Sartre argued, cannot be reduced to a collection of drives and structures, nor is it enslaved to its past as Freud's work suggested. Sartre advocated an existentialist psychoanalysis based on human freedom and the self's ability to reshape its own meaning and value.

Through the Sartrean approach Cannon offers a resolution to the crisis in psychoanalytic metatheory created by the current emphasis on relational needs. By comparing Sartre with Freud and influential post-Freudians like Melanie Klein, Otto Kernber, Margaret Mahler, D.W. Winnicott, Heinz Kohut, Harry Stack Sullivan, and Jacques Lacan, she demonstrates why the Sartrean model transcends the limitations of traditional Freudian metatheory. In the process, she adds a new dimension to our understanding of Sartre and his place in twentieth-century philosophy.

How We Think (Paperback): John Dewey How We Think (Paperback)
John Dewey
R378 Discovery Miles 3 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

John Dewey, one of America's greatest popular philosophers and educators, emphasises the importance of critical thinking and the vital role education should play. In this progressive work, written more than 80 years ago, Dewey, recognising that we are born with the ability to think, argues that the educator's fundamental role is to train us to think well. At a time when America is lamenting the lack of solid training in the sciences at the elementary and secondary levels, Dewey's enthusiastic correlation between the scientific mind and the natural attitude of childhood marked by curiosity, imagination, and the love of experimental inquiry offers a refreshing and optimistic perspective. He demonstrates how an appreciation of this correlation and a recognition of its value in educational practice can promote individual happiness and reduce social waste.

The Vienna Circle and the Lvov-Warsaw School (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): A. Szaniawski The Vienna Circle and the Lvov-Warsaw School (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
A. Szaniawski
R5,400 Discovery Miles 54 000 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book grew out of an international symposium, organized in September 1986 by the Austrian Cultural Institute in Warsaw in cooperation with the Polish Philosophical Society. The topic was: The Vienna Circle and the Lvov-Warsaw School. Since the two phil- osophical trends existed in roughly the same time and were close- ly related, it was one of the purposes of the symposium to investigate both similarities and thp differences. Some thirty people took part in the symposium, nearly twenty contributions were presented and extensively discussed. The sym- posium owed much to the excellent organization and warm hospital- ity shown by Dr Georg Jankovic, the Director of the Austrian In- stitute. As the person in charge of the scientific programme of the symposium, I take pleasure to acknowledge this debt. It so happened that a month later another symposium of a similar character was held. It took place in the University of Manchester, on the occasion of the centenary of the births of Stanislaw Lesniewski, Tadeusz Kotarbiflski and Wladyslaw Tatarkie- wicz. Some papers read at the Manchester symposium form a part of the present volume. It was not possible, for technical reasons (the time factor was one of them), to include in this book all the material from the two symposia. Certain contributions have appeared elsewhere (for instance, K. Szaniawski's 'Ajdukiewicz on Non-Deductive Inference' was published in Danish Yearbook of Philosophy, Vol. 23). On the other hand, certain papers have been written special- ly for this volume.

Philosophical Pragmatism and International Relations - Essays for a Bold New World (Hardcover): Shane J. Ralston Philosophical Pragmatism and International Relations - Essays for a Bold New World (Hardcover)
Shane J. Ralston; Contributions by Brian E Butler, Matthew J. Brown, Phillip Deen, Loren Goldman, …
R2,374 Discovery Miles 23 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What are the implications of philosophical pragmatism for international relations theory and foreign policy practice? According to John Ryder, "a foreign policy built on pragmatist principles is neither naive nor dangerous. In fact, it is very much what both the U.S. and the world are currently in need of." Close observers of Barack Obama's foreign policy statements have also raised the possibility of a distinctly pragmatist approach to international relations. Absent from the three dominant theoretical perspectives in the field-realism, idealism and constructivism-is any mention of pragmatism, except in the very limited, instrumentalist sense of choosing appropriate foreign policy tools to achieve proposed policy objectives. The key commitments of any international relations approach in the pragmatist tradition could include a flexible approach to crafting policy ends, theory integrally related to practice, a concern for both the normative and explanatory dimensions of international relations research, and policy means treated as hypotheses for experimental testing. Following the example of classic pragmatists such as John Dewey and neo-pragmatists like Richard Rorty, international relations scholars and foreign policy practitioners would have to forgo grand theories, instead embracing a situationally-specific approach to understanding and addressing emerging global problems. Unfortunately, commentary on the relationship between philosophical pragmatism and international relations has been limited. The authors in Philosophical Pragmatism and International Relations remedies this lacuna by exploring ways in which philosophical pragmatism, both classic and contemporary, can inform international relations theory and foreign policy practice today.

Being and Number in Heidegger's Thought (Hardcover): Michael Roubach Being and Number in Heidegger's Thought (Hardcover)
Michael Roubach
R4,623 Discovery Miles 46 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Being and Number in Heidegger's Thought" examines the relationship between mathematics and ontology in Heidegger's thought, from his earliest writings, through "Being and Time", up to and including his work of the 1930s. The book charts the unfamiliar territory of Heidegger's conception of mathematics, and explores the relationship between time and number in/Heidegger's magnum opus, "Being and Time". Michael Roubach offers a new analysis of Heideggerian finitude, one of the most recalcitrant problems in the interpretation on "Being and Time". In addition, he situates Heidegger's thought with respect to some of the core debates in logic and the foundations of mathematics. The book goes on to elucidate Heidegger's reading of mathematics as ontology in his writings from the 1930s. Roubach argues that exploring the connection between mathematics and ontology in Heidegger's thought affords us new insight into the origins and evolution of Heidegger's radically original take on the traditional problems of philosophy. This facilitates a reassessment, not only of specific issues in Heideggerian thought, but also of the larger question of Heidegger's place in twentieth-century philosophy.

Literature, Philosophy, Nihilism - The Uncanniest of Guests (Hardcover): Shane Weller Literature, Philosophy, Nihilism - The Uncanniest of Guests (Hardcover)
Shane Weller
R1,405 Discovery Miles 14 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book charts the history of the concept of nihilism in some of the most important philosophers and literary theorists of the modern and postmodern periods, including Wyndham Lewis, Heidegger, Adorno, Blanchot, Derrida, and Vattimo. Focusing in particular on the ways in which each of these thinkers produces a theory of the literary as the privileged form of resistance to nihilism, Weller offers the first in-depth analysis of nihilism's key role in the thinking of the aesthetic since Nietzsche.

On Justice - An Essay in Jewish Philosophy (Hardcover, New): L.E. Goodman On Justice - An Essay in Jewish Philosophy (Hardcover, New)
L.E. Goodman
R2,019 Discovery Miles 20 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is fair? How and when can punishment be legitimate? Is there recompense for human suffering? How can we understand ideas about immortality or an afterlife in the context of critical thinking on the human condition? In this book L. E. Goodman presents the first general theory of justice in this century to make systematic use of the Jewish sources and to bring them into a philosophical dialogue with the leading ethical and political texts of the Western tradition. Goodman takes an ontological approach to questions of natural and human justice, developing a theory of community and of nonvindictive yet retributive punishment that is grounded in careful analysis of various Jewish sources-biblical, rabbinic, and philosophical, His exegesis of these sources allow Plato, Kant, and Rawls to join in a discourse with Spinoza and medieval rationalists, such as Saasidah and Maimonides, who speak in a very different idiom but address many of the same themes. Drawing on sources old and new, Jewish and non-Jewish, Goodman offers fresh perspectives on important moral and theological issues that will be of interest to both Jewish and secular philosophers.
