The historian John Strype (1643 1737) published his monumental Elizabethan religious history Annals of the Reformation between 1709 and 1731. For over two and a half centuries it remained one of the most important Protestant histories of the period and has been reprinted in numerous editions. It covers from the accession of Elizabeth I in 1558 to the beginning of the reign of James I. The sources, transcribed by Strype, include state papers, official proclamations, royal records, and letters. Strype's thorough use of primary sources and the enormous scope and detail of his history has ensured its place as an outstanding work of eighteenth-century scholarship. It should be read by every student of Elizabethan religious history.

Nashdom - the great Benedictine community to which Gregory Dix belonged and, in many ways, the ultimate expression of Anglo-Catholicism - threatened to do likewise over the crisis of the Church of South India where the very idea of priestly ordination and identity was being challenged. This book is the first systematic historical examination of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's prose religious works. Coleridge (1772-1834), the son of a clergyman, "was born and died a communicating member of the Church of England." He was a prolific writer on the subject of the relationship between church and state. At age twenty-three, Coleridge published his first theological work, Lectures on Revealed Religion, which focused on the concept of reason facilitating virtue. Luke Wright maintains that this theme unites Coleridge's theological writings, including the posthumous Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit (1935). Although he was an advocate of radical politics in the 1790s, by the time Coleridge published The Friend (1809), he had become high Tory. His major contribution to Anglican religious discourse was the revival of the Tory position on church and state, which saw the two as an organic unity rather than separate entities forming an alliance. His writings were vigorously opposed to the Court Whig theory of church and state. After Coleridge's death in 1834, his arguments were taken up by William Gladstone and carried forward. Wright's careful reconstruction of Coleridge's dedication to church-state issues provides a new perspective on the writer himself and on the intellectual history of early nineteenth-century England.

This book frames the Church of England's missionary outreach to Aboriginal people within the reality of frontier violence, government control, segregation, and neglect. As missionary control diminished, Aboriginal people responded more overtly and autonomously. Some regarded "white" Christianity as irrelevant while others adopted it in culturally satisfying ways. Through the Australian Board of Missions (ABM), the Church of England sought to convert Aboriginal people into a Europeanized compliant sub-caste. The separation of children from their families was the first step. The book also shows how the ABM found itself increasingly embroiled in emerging broader social issues and changing government policies, requiring it to rethink its own policies.

This is an Agreed Statement of the International Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission. Discussions have been taking place between Roman Catholics and Anglicans over the past 40 years. Since 2000 Bishops from both churches have established a new body 'o promote our relationship by seeking to translate our manifest agreement in faith into common life and mission.'This is quite different from the theological discussions among experts, known as ARCIC. This statement is intended to foster discussion and reflection; it is also a call to action, based upon 'an honest appraisal of what has been achieved in our dialogue.' The International Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM) was established in 2001, and its work since then has been to implement a mission plan to carry into effect a closer unity based on the agreements made by the ARCIC discussions about doctrine.

American Episcopalians have long prided themselves on their love of consensus and their position as the church of American elites. They have, in the process, often forgotten that during the nineteenth century their church was racked by a divisive struggle that threatened to tear apart the very fabric of the Episcopal Church. On one side of this struggle was a powerful and aggressive Evangelical party who hoped to make the Episcopal Church into the democratic head of "the sisterhood of Evangelical Churches" in America; on the other side was the Oxford Movement, equally powerful and aggressive but committed to a range of Romantic principles which celebrated disillusion and disgust with evangelicalism and democracy alike. The resulting conflict--over theology, liturgy, and, above all, culture--led to the schism of 1873, in which many Evangelicals left the church to form the Reformed Episcopal Church.
