The Lunacy of Modern Finance Theory and Regulation (Paperback): Les Coleman The Lunacy of Modern Finance Theory and Regulation (Paperback)
Les Coleman
R1,800 Discovery Miles 18 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This provocative book provides insight into a finance industry that is run for the benefit of banks and service providers who rely on Beatles-era theories and regulation which are totally unsuited to the modern world. The author has a near-unique perspective based on over 30 years of working - literally around the globe - for corporates, fund managers and as finance academic. In his last role his research has focused on investment decisions, and during 2012 he interviewed 34 fund managers in Istanbul, London, New York and Melbourne. He blends rich understanding of finance theory and practice to unravel the investment industry's structure and show how banks and other finance institutions privilege themselves at investors' expense. The book highlights that finance industry self-regulation is weak. Risks from inexpertise, theft, bad data and other sources are high. Regulation of the industry appears to be ineffectual with the setting of such a high bar that it is virtually impossible to successfully prosecute even the most blatant and egregious offenders. The book closes with the simple suggestion that corporations' regulations be altered to introduce the strict liability offence of being a director or officer of a large bank that becomes bankrupt. This follows the strategy of legislation that has been effective in cleaning up the environment, making workplaces safer and reducing crime by punishing those responsible for an offence.

Financial Innovation, Regulation and Crises in History (Hardcover): Harold James Financial Innovation, Regulation and Crises in History (Hardcover)

Applied Quantitative Finance (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2008): Wolfgang Karl Hardle, Nikolaus Hautsch, Ludger Overbeck Applied Quantitative Finance (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2008)
Wolfgang Karl Hardle, Nikolaus Hautsch, Ludger Overbeck
R2,724 Discovery Miles 27 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent years have witnessed a growing importance of quantitative methods in both financial research and industry. This development requires the use of advanced techniques on a theoretical and applied level, especially when it comes to the quantification of risk and the valuation of modern financial products. Applied Quantitative Finance (2nd edition) provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art treatment of cutting-edge topics and methods. It provides solutions to and presents theoretical developments in many practical problems such as risk management, pricing of credit derivatives, quantification of volatility and copula modelling. The synthesis of theory and practice supported by computational tools is reflected in the selection of topics as well as in a finely tuned balance of scientific contributions on practical implementation and theoretical concepts. This linkage between theory and practice offers theoreticians insights into considerations of applicability and, vice versa, provides practitioners comfortable access to new techniques in quantitative finance. Themes that are dominant in current research and which are presented in this book include among others the valuation of Collaterized Debt Obligations (CDOs), the high-frequency analysis of market liquidity, the pricing of Bermuda options and realized volatility. All Quantlets for the calculation of the given examples are downloadable from the Springer web pages.

New Paradigms in Financial Economics - How Would Keynes Reconstruct Economics? (Paperback): Kazem Falahati New Paradigms in Financial Economics - How Would Keynes Reconstruct Economics? (Paperback)
Kazem Falahati
R1,487 Discovery Miles 14 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The recent global financial crisis has made the inadequacies of the scientific state of economics and finance glaringly obvious, as these disciplines gave the false reassurance that such a self-destructive phenomenon could not happen. A similar phenomenon arose in the 1930's, when the pitfalls of the dominant economic theories were sharply exposed. Since then, the same analytical framework, in its new versions, has revealed a huge number of other empirical and experimental failures. On the other hand, the founders of the currently dominant theories in economics and finance (i.e. the standard paradigm) such as Walras (1834-1910), Modigliani (1918-2003) and Miller (1923-2000) have identified mathematical contradictions within their own foundational models, the root cause of which no one has yet discovered. The standard paradigm has thus lost the reason for its existence in the light of experience, experiments and logical rigour. This book identifies the heuristic cause of these external and internal contradictions of the standard paradigm and remedies these problems by offering a new paradigm which can explain and predict observed economic behaviour, and resolve the extant behavioural, empirical and experimental puzzles. The new paradigm offers a dramatically improved understanding of economic behaviour at the micro as well as macro level of the economy within an over-arching framework comprising the real and the financial sectors. It does so in a rigorous but simple and clear way, using an axiomatic approach. It also offers policy recommendations on how the economy should be managed to avoid severe swings. It therefore is of great interest to scholars and practitioners in economics and finance.

Introduction to Buddhist Economics - The Relevance of Buddhist Values in Contemporary Economy and Society (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Introduction to Buddhist Economics - The Relevance of Buddhist Values in Contemporary Economy and Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Ernest C. H. Ng
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Living in a market-driven economy where short-term profit and economic growth appear to be the ultimate goal, this book explores how Buddhist teachings could bridge the divide between our spiritual and material needs and reconcile the tension between doing good for social interest and doing well for financial success. This book serves as a pioneering effort to systematically introduce Buddhist Economics as an interdisciplinary subject to audience with limited background in either Buddhism or economics. It elaborates some core concepts in Buddhist teachings, their relevance to economics, and means of achieving sustainability for individuals, society and the environment with the cultivation of ethical living and well-being. Through scholarly research from relevant fields including Buddhist studies, economics, behavioral finance, cognitive science, and psychology, this book illustrates the relevance of Buddhist values in the contemporary economy and society, as well as the efficacy of Buddhist perspectives on decision-making in daily life.

Risk Management in Finance and Logistics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Chunhui Xu, Takayuki Shiina Risk Management in Finance and Logistics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Chunhui Xu, Takayuki Shiina
R3,796 Discovery Miles 37 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first book to introduce the major quantitative tools in risk management taking financial investments and logistics planning as the background: optimization and stochastic programming. Contained here are the fundamentals of portfolio selection theory from the point of view of risk control, and methods for risk control with new and popular risk measures such as VaR (Value-at-Risk) and CVaR (Conditional VaR). The book also introduces a new theory for risk management in more general investment situations such as flexible investment decisions, providing an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the interrelations between these fields of research. Basic concepts of stochastic programming are introduced, and their applications to risk management in inventory distribution and network design are covered as well. Illustrated by carefully chosen examples and supported by extensive data analyses, this book is highly recommended to readers who seek an in-depth and up-to-date integrated overview of the ever-expanding theoretical and quantitative fields of risk management in financial investment and logistics planning.

Reforming the Governance of the Financial Sector (Paperback): David Mayes, Geoffrey Wood Reforming the Governance of the Financial Sector (Paperback)
David Mayes, Geoffrey Wood
R1,789 Discovery Miles 17 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many financial institutions have in recent years failed - failed either completely, and gone into bankruptcy, or failed in the sense that they have not achieved what their owners or their customers expected them to deliver. This has had significant and adverse effects on customers, taxpayers, shareholders, and sometimes management. There has been much discussion of what should be done about this, and some action has been taken. But has it been the right kind of action? Crises of the sort being experienced are low probability but high impact events. This volume, from an international group of scholars, deals with two main issues: firstly, how can the governance of the financial sector by the authorities be improved and secondly, how can the governance of firms and institutions within the sector be improved to render the probability and cost of future crises lower? Poor governance has been one of the major contributors to the global financial crisis. With better governance of and in the financial sector the financial crisis might well have been avoided altogether and certainly could have been much milder in its impact. This is not simply a case of being wise after the event. These problems were widely discussed before the event, but little action was taken. This book explores not only what the contribution of poor governance was to the crisis and to its depth, but also why it is often difficult to improve governance. The volume offers a positive critique of the measures that are being put in place in the light of the experience of the crisis and suggests how they might plausibly be improved. This book will be of particular interest to students and researchers of economics and international finance, but will also prove profitable reading for practitioners and the interested public.

A Fast and Frugal Finance - Bridging Contemporary Behavioral Finance and Ecological Rationality (Paperback): William P. Forbes,... A Fast and Frugal Finance - Bridging Contemporary Behavioral Finance and Ecological Rationality (Paperback)
William P. Forbes, Aloysius Igboekwu, Shabnam Mousavi
R2,061 Discovery Miles 20 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A Fast and Frugal Finance: Bridging Contemporary Behavioural Finance and Ecological Rationality adds psychological reality to classical financial reasoning. It shows how financial professionals can reach better and quicker decisions using the 'fast and frugal' framework for decision-making, adding dramatically to time and outcome efficiency, while also retaining accuracy. The book provides the reader with an adaptive toolbox of heuristic tools and classification systems to aid real-world decisions. Throughout, financial applications are presented alongside real-world examples to help readers solve established problems in finance, including stock buying and selling decisions, when faced with not only risk but fundamental uncertainty. The book concludes by describing potential solutions to financial problems in the forefront of contemporary debates, and calls for taking psychological insights seriously.

Global Financial Centers, Economic Power, and (In)Efficiency (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Fikret Causevic Global Financial Centers, Economic Power, and (In)Efficiency (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Fikret Causevic
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book scrutinizes global financial flows and stocks, both financial assets and liabilities and their impact on the global balance of economic power, especially as they affect the largest and fastest-growing countries in both the developed and the developing world. It shows how financial flows can promote economic growth and financial capital can serve as a tool for higher growth rates in emerging market economies, but also that the huge amounts of financial capital currently being spent in advanced countries to promote economic growth has produced at best very modest improvements and in some cases negative results. The book opens with an analysis of global capital flows and their concentration. It then offers an analysis of rates of relative economic growth (or decline). The final section deals with the (decreasing) economic efficiency of financial flows and the (un)sustainability of economic growth, especially during the past eight years of economic recovery. Tackling one of the most serious problems in the global economy today, this book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and students of capital markets, financial crisis, and financial economics.

R3,679 Discovery Miles 36 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understand Up-to-Date Statistical Techniques for Financial and Actuarial Applications

Since the first edition was published, statistical techniques, such as reliability measurement, simulation, regression, and Markov chain modeling, have become more prominent in the financial and actuarial industries. Consequently, practitioners and students must acquire strong mathematical and statistical backgrounds in order to have successful careers.

Financial and Actuarial Statistics: An Introduction, Second Edition enables readers to obtain the necessary mathematical and statistical background. It also advances the application and theory of statistics in modern financial and actuarial modeling. Like its predecessor, this second edition considers financial and actuarial modeling from a statistical point of view while adding a substantial amount of new material.

New to the Second Edition

  • Nomenclature and notations standard to the actuarial field
  • Excel exercises with solutions, which demonstrate how to use Excel functions for statistical and actuarial computations
  • Problems dealing with standard probability and statistics theory, along with detailed equation links
  • A chapter on Markov chains and actuarial applications
  • Expanded discussions of simulation techniques and applications, such as investment pricing
  • Sections on the maximum likelihood approach to parameter estimation as well as asymptotic applications
  • Discussions of diagnostic procedures for nonnegative random variables and Pareto, lognormal, Weibull, and left truncated distributions
  • Expanded material on surplus models and ruin computations
  • Discussions of nonparametric prediction intervals, option pricing diagnostics, variance of the loss function associated with standard actuarial models, and Gompertz and Makeham distributions
  • Sections on the concept of actuarial statistics for a collection of stochastic status models

The book presents a unified approach to both financial and actuarial modeling through the use of general status structures. The authors define future time-dependent financial actions in terms of a status structure that may be either deterministic or stochastic. They show how deterministic status structures lead to classical interest and annuity models, investment pricing models, and aggregate claim models. They also employ stochastic status structures to develop financial and actuarial models, such as surplus models, life insurance, and life annuity models.

The Economic Crisis and Governance in the European Union - A Critical Assessment (Hardcover, New): Javier Bilbao-Ubillos The Economic Crisis and Governance in the European Union - A Critical Assessment (Hardcover, New)
Javier Bilbao-Ubillos
R4,637 Discovery Miles 46 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the way in which the financial crisis that began in the US spread to the economy of the European Union. It takes a critical look at the measures adopted by EU institutions in response to that crisis, seeking to explain the rationale behind them, their context, their development and why different exit strategies were not adopted. In doing this, the book makes comparisons with the measures adopted by institutions in the US and the UK. As the crisis has shown that the financial supervision frameworks prevailing in 2007 were not fully able to deal with the largest financial crisis in history, this volume also reviews the proposals that have been designed to reform the supervisory architecture in financial services in the EU. The book concludes that the EU member states under most pressure from financial markets do suffer from intrinsic problems, but that the economic effects of the crisis have been exacerbated by shortcomings in economic governance within the EU. This work will be highly relevant to policy makers and scholars looking at EU integration, finance and market regulation.

Crowdfunding for SMEs - A European Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Roberto Bottiglia, Flavio Pichler Crowdfunding for SMEs - A European Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Roberto Bottiglia, Flavio Pichler
R3,106 Discovery Miles 31 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Crowdfunding for SMEs: A European Perspective provides a valuable insight into this new source of capital. In particular, the authors focus on financial return crowdfunding, which repays the crowd either through debt or equity. This source of capital might play a significant role in the future becoming an alternative or a complement to traditional funding sources. It is therefore of the uttermost importance to understand what has boosted its exponential growth in recent years, as well as the key drivers of success of P2P lending and equity crowdfunding campaigns on both the funders and the fundraisers side. Due to the financial nature of the return provided to the crowd, financial return crowdfunding has been the object of recent waves of regulation, although the European Union still lacks a set of common rules. The aim of regulation should be twofold, to protect investors and, at the same time, to favor the financing for SMEs. In this book, the authors explore such issues and the regulatory policies, while looking to the future of financial return crowdfunding as an evolving source of capital.

Financial Liberalization and Economic Performance - Brazil at the Crossroads (Paperback): Luiz Fernando de Paula Financial Liberalization and Economic Performance - Brazil at the Crossroads (Paperback)
Luiz Fernando de Paula
R823 Discovery Miles 8 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Brazil has followed a pattern of economic development inspired by Washington Consensus. This framework includes a set of liberalising and market friendly policies such as privatisation, trade liberalization, stimulus to foreign direct investment, tax reform, and social security reforms. This book assesses the determinants and impacts of financial liberalisation in Brazil considering its two dimensions: the opening up of the balance of payments capital account, and the penetration by foreign bank of the domestic banking sector. The author combines theoretical and empirical analyses. Some make use of mathematical models and/or statistical techniques; however, they are only used when they are strictly necessary to the analysis.

Ricardo on Money and Finance - A Bicentenary Reappraisal (Hardcover, New): Yuji Sato, Susumu Takenaga Ricardo on Money and Finance - A Bicentenary Reappraisal (Hardcover, New)
Yuji Sato, Susumu Takenaga
R5,486 Discovery Miles 54 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

David Ricardo, one of the major figures in the history of economic thought, particularly in the English classical political economy, deployed his activities as economist just two hundreds of years ago. Since then his economics has been generally estimated as the culminating point of the classical economics, and his name and theory has been exerting an enduring influence up to the present. This book, consisting of articles contributed by historians economic thought on money and finance, intends to reappraise the Ricardo's monetary and financial thought on the occasion of its bicentenary and to offer historical clues to understanding today's world wide financial crisis. The book consists of eight chapters divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to the historical back ground of Ricardo's thought (Hume, Smith, Thornton etc). It serves to bring in relief the originality of Ricardo's thought in the historical context. The second and central part consists of four chapters discussing the most important aspects of Ricardo's monetary thought: Ricardo and quantity theory of money, the ideal monetary regime conceived by Ricardo very early in his career and matured till the last moment of his life, plan for the establishment of a national bank. In this part, the relation between the quantity of money and its value in Ricardo's theory is examined in a new light and Ricardo as a non-quantity theorist. The two chapters in the third and last part discuss the problems raised after Ricardo in relation to his monetary thought. Tracing Ricardo's economic thought to the early 19th century, this book may provide readers insight to help them understand the present day financial crises through his works.

The Risk in Risk Management - Financial Organizations & the Problem of Conformity (Hardcover, New): Gregory B. Vit The Risk in Risk Management - Financial Organizations & the Problem of Conformity (Hardcover, New)
Gregory B. Vit
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Banks take very large risks by consistently herding in the same perilous directions while believing they are safe and unique. This book presents a risk management framework to understand conformity and deviance within investment banks and other large organizations. It suggests that some groups understand the dynamics of this conformity to their advantage. This requires a deeper understanding of the risk in risk management. Fraudsters can game the system to their advantage legally and illegally; therefore risk managers must understand the interplay of multiple logics in order to govern and manage risk. Featuring short illustrative cases of massive risk mismanagement, this book walks the reader through four risk management perspectives (economic, institutional, evolutionary and contrarian) that explain why and how economic rationality is overridden by social forces. By understanding conformity and deviance, groups within organizations will be better equipped to manage risk and go against the tides of conformity to their advantage.

Policing the Markets - Inside the Black Box of Securities Enforcement (Paperback): James Williams Policing the Markets - Inside the Black Box of Securities Enforcement (Paperback)
James Williams
R1,300 Discovery Miles 13 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Set against the backdrop of the recurring waves of financial scandal and crisis to hit Canada, the US, the UK, and Europe over the last decade, this book examines the struggles of securities enforcement agencies to police the financial markets. While allegations of regulatory failure in this realm are commonplace and are well documented in policy and legal scholarship, James Williams seeks to move beyond these conventional accounts arguing that they are based on a limited view of the regulatory process and overlook the actual practices and dilemmas of enforcement work. Informed by interviews with police, regulators, lawyers, accountants, and investor advocates, along with a wealth of documentary materials, the book is rooted in a uniquely interdisciplinary social science perspective. Peering inside the black box of enforcement, it examines the organizational, professional, geographical, technological, and legal influences that shape securities enforcement as a distinctly knowledge-based enterprise. The result of these influences, Williams argues, is the production of a very particular vision of financial disorder which captures certain forms of misconduct while overlooking others, a reflection not of incompetence or capture but of the unique demands and constraints of the regulatory craft. Providing a very different, and much needed, account of the challenges faced by regulators and enforcement agencies, this book will be of enormous interest to current research on enforcement, regulation, and governance both within and beyond the financial realm.
