Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2019, a powerful, well-researched, fictional account exploring the trokosi tradition for the curious and the open-minded. Abeo Kata lives a comfortable, happy life in West Africa as the privileged nine-year-old daughter of a government employee and stay-at-home mother. But when the Katas' idyllic lifestyle takes a turn for the worse, Abeo's father, following his mother's advice, places the girl in a religious shrine, hoping that the sacrifice of his daughter will serve as atonement for the crimes of his ancestors. Unspeakable acts befall Abeo for the fifteen years she is enslaved within the shrine. When she is finally rescued, broken and battered, she must struggle to overcome her past, endure the revelation of family secrets, and learn to trust and love again. In the tradition of Chris Cleave's Little Bee, Praise Song for the Butterflies is a contemporary story that offers an educational, eye-opening account of the practice of ritual servitude in West Africa. Spanning decades and two continents, Praise Song for the Butterflies is an unflinching tale of the devastation that children are subject to when adults are ruled by fear and someone must pay the consequences. "Abeo is unrelenting - a fiery protagonist who sparks in every scene. Bernice L. McFadden has created yet another compelling story, this time about hope and freedom." Nicole Dennis-Benn, author of Here Comes the Sun

This book comprises responses by a Sufi master, Hadrat Sahib of the Naqshbandi tradition, to letters written by students of the master. The questions posed in these letters cover a wide range of issues including, financial problems, health issues, family matters, education and bereavement. The advice given by the master reveals a deep spirituality which places the particular student's problem in context and details a specific method of offering oneself to God at all times. It is difficult to find such detail relating to spiritual practices in Sufi literature. These letters are inspirational and timeless. They provide a cure to a world dominated by materialism and all its attendant miseries.

Iman Rappetti is an award-winning journalist who has been involved in print, radio and television. She worked as a young journalist in South Africa and then abandoned it (along with all her worldly possessions) when she became Muslim. She lived in the Islamic Republic of Iran for two years, where she also worked on a current affairs TV show for the state broadcaster before returning to South Africa and resuming her life here. She describes herself as `the youngest of five children. One Rasatafarian brother (passed away), one ex-con brother (who can dance the pants off any woman and has a wicked sense of humour), another brother who's a big shot in the marine engineering industry (he makes a mean curry), and a sister who has the thankless task of staying at home and raising the rugrats (she has a way with words, and also makes a kick-ass briyani)'. In this moving and entertaining memoir, Iman shares stories and what she has learned from her colourful journey through life.

Denis Tuohy had been a broadcaster in news and current affairs for half a century when he was asked to contribute to BBC Radio Ulster's Thought for the Day in his native Belfast. A reporter and presenter who had covered major stories around the world for BBC's Panorama and Tonight, ITV's This Week and ITN news was to move into uncharted territory. This book is a collection of his Thought for the Day pieces over the past few years with a linking commentary about his professional and personal life. "Across my own wide landscape," he says, " I've been free to make unprompted choices of subject and to communicate them, in little more than a couple of minutes, to listeners in cars, kitchens, care homes, as they face up to another day." The choices have been prompted by his travels, by meeting famous names and by personal history. In her memoirs Margaret Thatcher described their first encounter as hostile but met him again in calmer circumstances. Richard Burton told him he could no longer watch his beloved Wales play rugby in case they might lose. Ireland's rugby star Jack Kyle said that his moments of inspired brilliance had "somehow happened through him and he was grateful." He recalls a multi-faith gathering in New York after the killing of Martin Luther King, meeting an integrated Belfast singing group in apartheid South Africa, and taking part as an actor in Over the Bridge, Sam Thompson's play about bigotry in the Belfast shipyard. Streets and Secret Places is a mix of reflections that have featured in Thought for the Day including insights that have come with experience.
Let me tell you what this book is not. It's not about religion. It's not about telling you how to live your life. It's not about taking on a new set of beliefs. Plain and simple, it's about how to relate to your own thoughts and emotions in a way that makes your life more enjoyable, more free, brighter, clearer and wiser. At the age of twenty-six, Bjoern Natthiko Lindeblad abandoned a promising career, gave away all his possessions, and left his loved ones to become a forest monk. For seventeen years he lived according to the rules of the monastery. After returning to Swedish society, he was met with the diagnosis of a progressive, incurable disease: ALS. In I May Be Wrong, he shares his hard-won insights into how one can live a more present life, and what stands out as most important when things are coming to an end. The result is a beautiful, powerful and urgent last lesson on how we can live more peacefully with ourselves, and come to accept the uncertainty that is a part of all we do.
Join over forty Christian historians as they journey through the biblical and historical past, reading God's word in light of the experiences of those made in God's image. Along with an invitation to study Scripture from Genesis through Revelation, Faith and History: A Devotional provides a link between modern Christians and faithful believers from the past - reminding us of all we share in our faith in the present day, as well as how different were the past worlds of our sisters and brothers in Christ. With Faith and History, you will read the Gospels in light of the Civil Rights Movement and the Holocaust and pray the psalms alongside Frederick Douglass and Isaac Watts. Learn more about well-known Christians such as Billy Graham, C. S. Lewis, Aimee Semple McPherson, John Perkins, and St. Patrick, and meet historical figures who are less known but no less significant, such as faith healer Kathryn Kuhlman, Anabaptist martyr Felix Manz, and medieval mystic Margery Kempe. Each scriptural passage pairs with a historical reflection, suggests questions for further consideration and discussion, recommends resources for historical study, and closes with a short prayer. This unique devotional integrates historical reflection with study and prayer to help Christians meet their ongoing need for spiritual formation. Faith and History is also intended to help Christians better understand their relationship to the past at a time when history, memory, and heritage are so hotly contested in American politics and society. |
