This guide gives an overview of the non-industrial Clyde, an area
of outstanding natural beauty and exceptional wildlife. Nine
islands are found in this archipelago, of which Arran, Bute and
Great Cumbrae are readily accessible to the public. Here a
historical background is followed by a brief description of the
present-day villages. The most interesting fauna and flora are
described in some detail, as are archaeological sites and numerous
other places of interest. Finally, a variety of walks, both short
and lengthy are outlined. Potential tourists, including
hillwalkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and all those interested in
Scottish natural history will find a wealth of information to plan
and enjoy a visit to these fascinating islands.
Bikepacking Scotland by Markus Stitz features 20 great multi-day
off-the-beaten-track cycling adventures across the Scottish
mainland and islands. The book features routes of different lengths
which take in the best of the country, from the Ayrshire Alps,
Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders in southern Scotland, through
Perthshire’s unique drovers’ roads and the grand architecture
of the Central Belt, across to Argyll’s islands on ferry-hopping
adventures around Islay, a paradise for whisky connoisseurs, and
Jura and Mull to spot magnificent golden eagles. And, of course,
the Scottish Highlands with an epic tour of the Cairngorms National
Park, home to 25 per cent of Britain's rare and endangered species,
as well as the author’s own take on the North Coast 500 and more.
Researched and written by the founder of Bikepacking Scotland, and
mostly accessible by public transport, each route includes all the
information you need to help you plan your ride, with points of
interest along the route, food recommendations and accommodation
options, in addition to stunning photography and overview mapping.
Downloadable GPX files of the routes are also available. Alongside
further information on access, seasons and what to pack, and
valuable insight from Scottish cycling personalities including Mark
Beaumont and Jenny Graham, this book is full of practical tips and
advice for both experienced bikepackers and those who want to try
it out for the first time.
As an author, Bill is probably better known, under his byline of
Sean Collins, for his books set in the shadowy world of global
intelligence. He has been contributing, under several bylines, to
international magazines and press for over four decades. As a
travel writer, critic and editor, Bill has travelled extensively,
from Taipei and Tahiti to Hong Kong and Bora Bora. In Travails
Abroad, he takes a retrospective look at the embarrassing dilemmas
and outright disasters which have befallen him: from being glued to
a jeep in Tahiti, being trapped in an outside toilet on a
mountaintop in Turkey, and trying to attract the attention of the
staff of a Berlin restaurant to the fact his wife was on fire. He
says: `all the disasters in this book are absolutely true - I have
witnesses. I trust what I endured may appeal to the reader's sense
of humour and sympathy - they certainly didn't appeal to mine at
the time...' Bill admits that potential travellers reading this
book could be forgiven for deciding to stay at home.

In this classic of travel writing, first published sixty years ago,
a Danish journalist records his experience of life in North Africa
under colonial rule. Driving through the Sahara in a battered
Chevrolet, having converted to Islam and with a knowledge of
Arabic, he leaves the beaten track to discover communities and
landscapes shrouded in mystery for centuries. Brushes with
magicians, cave-dwellers and Sufi mystics, however, prove less
astonishing than the cruelties inflicted on the local populations
by Mussolini's generals.

Guidebook to the Way of the Roses, a 170-mile coast-to-coast cycle
route across Lancashire and Yorkshire. The three-day journey
(alternative two, four and five day itineraries are also outlined)
begins in Morecambe and finishes in Bridlington, linking scenic
country lanes, minor roads and traffic-free cycle paths. Six
excellent day rides, located in the vicinity of the main route, are
also described. Clear and concise route description is accompanied
by 1:100K mapping and gradient profiles, guaranteeing problem-free
navigating. Also included is handy advice on practicalities such as
preparation, equipment, accommodation and travel logistics to and
from the start and finish of the route. A challenge within the
reach of cyclists of all abilities and a satisfying traverse across
country, the Way of the Roses takes in idyllic villages such as

Flamborough Head.
This very failure, compounded by the plague of caterpillars of the
book s title allows Nigel Barley to concentrate on everyday life in
Dowayoland and the tattered remnants of an overripe French colonial
legacy. Witchcraft fills the Cameroonian air; add an earnest German
traveller showing explicit birth?control propaganda to the
respectable Dowayos, an interest in the nipple?mutilating practices
of highlanders, unanswered questions of the link between
infertility and circumcision and you have the ingredients of a
comic masterpiece. But beneath all the joy and shared laughter
there is a skilful and wise reflection on the problems of different
cultures ever understanding one another. The Dowayos are a mountain
people that perform their elaborate, fascinating and fearsome
ceremony at six or seven year intervals. It was an opportunity that
was too good to miss, a key moment to test the balance of tradition
and modernity. Yet, like much else in this hilarious book the
circumcision ceremony was to prove frustratingly elusive.
