Kimber shares his adventures, misadventures, and reflections as a part-time farmer and fetcher of firewood, his struggles with recalcitrant sheep and aging tractors, the joys of roaming the hills with his dog, plunking for pickerel in the lily pads, savoring the echoes of silence in a sleeping Maine village. Like a good apple pie, these essays are a blend of the sweet and the tart, the aromatic and the astringent, seasoned with a dash of wit and self irony, these love letters to life upcountry are as crisp, fresh, and bracing as they are affectionate.

In Bible Places, H. B. Tristram aimed to provide a brief yet very informative description of every Holy Land site mentioned in the Bible. Tristram intended this book for a popular audience, especially "such as have neither time nor opportunity to refer to larger treatises on the geography of Palestine." Relying on the extensive research of the Palestinian Exploration Fund, Tristram's work afforded many a new and vividly descriptive perspective on the Holy Land and a new awareness of the geographical and topographical accuracy of the Bible.

Tugboats hold a fascination not only for anyone who has worked aboard a vessel or around a harbor but for many land-bound folks as well. There is something about their chunky, powerful build and their often risky but vital work that excites our interest and admiration. The captains and crews of the tugboats are justifiably proud of what they do, and they have some great stories to tell about the ships and barges they tow or push; the harbors, storms, tides, and dangerous passages they must negotiate; the unions; the pilots; the different designs and capabilties of their boats; and the way the boats and their livelihood are irrevocably changing.
In the mid-1800s, thousands of hardy pioneers braved the long and
arduous journey across the Great Plains for a chance to build a new
life in the West. These emigrants traveled more than 2,000
treacherous miles to the Pacific Ocean over the Oregon Trail in
what became the largest mass migration in American history. Along
the way they wrote letters and kept diaries, and some published
memoirs of their trip years after their journey.

Nonetheless the reader may quibble with some answers and the author is always happy to accept sound advice and change accordingly. Travel Medicine has a broad canvas. It cuts across the boundaries of Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Tropical Medicine, Geographical Medicine, Aviation and Refugee Medicine. Because of this the few Textbooks we have Travel Medicine are large and difficult to digest. This little book attempts to set down in concise form the essential elements of Travel Medicine in a way that is easy to read yet challenging. These pages certainly invite the reader to share in excitement and wonder of this fascinating subject.

The cemeteries of Greater London have been a neglected area of the capital's history. They are filled not only with the remains of recent generations but also with a wealth of architectural and social history that is described here in an entertaining and eloquent narrative full of picturesque melancholy. The book is divided into two. Part one records the origins of London's cemeteries and includes introductory chapters on cemetery history, planning, architecture, epitaphs and natural history. Part two is a gazetteer, with descriptions of all the cemeteries in Greater London, together with short biographies of the celebrated people buried in them. There are two indexes, one listing the names of those in the gazetteer and a second naming the architects, landscapers and sculptors whose work is represented in the cemeteries. The text is illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs and a wide range of rarely seen archive images. London Cemeteries is an important source for biographical and genealogical research, and a compendium of material for the architectural historian. Social and local historians will also find much of interest here.

Lighthouses may stand watchfully over serene waters one day and be bombarded by immense waves the next. They may look out on the most spectacular views, mark the entrance to a busy harbour or be placed in some of the world's most desolate locations. To seafarers they are guiding lights in dangerous waters, but, once decommissioned, they can acquire an air of mystery. They are the most strictly functional of all civilian buildings and yet they can be surprisingly beautiful and varied in design. Are they square, cylindrical or octagonal? Are they single structures or towers on top of other buildings? Are they made of wood, stone, brick, or concrete? Are they coloured with stripes or bands? From Lake Michigan to the Arctic Circle, from the British Isles to Brazil, Lighthouses celebrates more than 200 structures and the stunning vistas that surround them. Taking examples from all around the world, the book features an immense array of operating and disused lighthouses from the 18th century to the present day, from those marking ocean coastlines to structures besides lakes and on rivers, from lighthouses cloaked in ice to Art Deco classics to tilting structures abandoned in sand dunes. Presented in a handy pocket-sized format, Lighthouses is arranged geographically, with more than 200 colour photographs and captions explaining the construction, operation and history of each entry.
