Why criss-cross Iceland in all directions, in all seasons, when the
world is so vast? For the inner exile offered by this walk on the
heights. For the first snows that upset the landscape and teleport
us into a charcoal painting. For the spring which will bring back
with the birds a forgotten sweetness. For the summer with days
without night. For the rare men and women I have been lucky enough
to meet. For the infinite range of emotions aroused by these boreal
steppes. For the space, the freedom, the omnipresence of natural
forces, which help to breathe deeper. To find the oldest living All
Black in a hospice in Auckland, to share a vintage wine with Jim
Harrison in his house in Montana, to draw the portrait of penguins
in Antarctica, to cross the rivers of Iceland on foot…
Photographer, journalist, author and speaker, Olivier Joly has
always let his steps guide him towards emotions and encounters.
Surveyor of large geographical spaces and human intimacy, he saw
over time his intimate compass pointing to the cold and windy ends
of the world. This is how he found his promised land. Twenty trips
and a year on the spot have made him one of Iceland's most
knowledgeable connoisseurs. After the success of his book Four
Seasons in Iceland, he now looks at it in black and white.

handsomely bound book, the latest in the 150 series, has inspiring
photographs and a wealth of information on each location.

Washington DC is more than a pretty face; it is a Southern city on
the edge of the industrial North; it is a company town, where
politics, as combat or spectator sport, is always the subject; it
is a city of transplants and transients drawn from around the
world, yet remains unexpectedly provincial. The major tourist
attractions are well-known; you will need little help in that
department. But a cup of coffee, a bit of shopping, a cocktail and
a good feed will pep you up in between museums and monuments. Here
are 33 choice suggestions to help get the most from your visit to
the District of Columbia.

warm, witty and wise' Daily Mail 'This is a lovely uplifting book
that transported me away, firstly to the beautiful city of Rome and
then to gorgeous Cornwall. It's a moving and emotional story of
families in all their messy wonderfulness, of people losing one
another, and then coming together again - sometimes in unexpected
ways. A hugely enjoyable family tale,it was exactly what I wanted
to read at this time.' Louise Douglas 'This Changes Everything is

This new, fourth edition of Bradt's Colombia has been thoroughly
revised and updated to include all the most recent developments in
this emerging South American destination and to bring to the fore
the country's fast-developing ecotourism offering. New for this
edition is coverage of Yopal and San José del Guaviare, Caqueta,
Vichada and Guainia, and on the Atlantic coast, Palomino. Also
included are details of how to go star-gazing in the lunar
landscapes of the Tatacoa desert, learning to wrangle cattle during
the Coleo festival in Villavicencio, visiting ancient rock
paintings in unexplored Guaviare, where to try the traditional
fermented tipple of the original Muisca people, and visiting the
rainbow river of Caño Cristales and the untouched wilds and
jungles of Chiribiquete National Park. After decades of trouble,
Colombia now offers one of the most exciting new travel experiences
in South America. The country is home to a staggering 10% of all
species found on the planet: pink river dolphins swim in the Amazon
near Leticia, jaguar and ocelot slip between the trees in
vine-tangled rainforest and birdwatchers rightly marvel in the vast
savannah of Los Llanos and beyond. What's more, from vibrant cities
such as Bogotá, Medellin, Cali and Cartagena to emerging
destinations across the country, Colombians will receive you with a
smile as if you were one of their own. Still unaccustomed to
international visitors, just speaking a little Spanish goes a long
way. With Bradt's Colombia, relax in Bogotás fashionable
restaurants, discover the colonial backwater of Mompós, a town
currently undergoing something of a renaissance with its
traditional silver jewellery shops and international jazz festival,
and explore the UNESCO Seaflower Biosphere Reserve in the San
Andres Archipelago, location of Providencia, the least developed
and visited island in all of the Caribbean. For birders, the
country boasts an embarrassment of riches, nowhere more so than Los
Llanos and the Sierra Nevada mountains in the north.

After Mallorca and the first successful volume of the Green series
by teNeues, photographer Patricia Parinejad has now travelled to
Namibia and spent time there to capture in impressive photographs
the work of a number of environmental projects, sustainability
initiatives, green hotels, lodges and camps, conservation and
research programmes and local producers, farmers and
craftsmen. Together with poetic as well as informative texts
this has resulted in the extraordinary illustrated book Green
Namibia. A book for and about inspiring people who are helping to
keep the green movement going by working towards a more sustainable
operation of their hotels, protecting wildlife, producing locally,
promoting biodiversity and reducing their carbon footprint at the
same time. Patricia Parinejad highlights how we can
reconnect more with the natural world and "Mother Earth" on the
journey to inspire that all-important sense of awe for Namibia, its
deserts and plains, and our planet in general. Text in English and
German.

New York is one of the world's megacities, with almost 20 million
people living in the wider metropolitan area. America's most
populous city has been described as the cultural, financial and
media capital of the world. It is also a universally recognizable
city, home of the Manhattan skyline, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge
and the headquarters of the United Nations. New York provides a
pictorial exploration of the city's five boroughs: Brooklyn,
Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. The book introduces
the reader to some classic architecture, such as the art deco
Chrysler Building and Empire State Building; quirky neighborhoods,
such as Greenwich Village, Chinatown, and Hell's Kitchen; iconic
landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty and One World Trade
Center; and great cultural centres, such as Broadway, the home of
North American theatre; Times Square, the 'Crossroads of the
World'; and Madison Square Garden, an indoor sports and events
arena. Presented in a pocket-sized landscape format and with
captions explaining the story behind each photo, New York is a
stunning collection of images that vividly brings to life the
world's greatest city.

This volume suggests a model of collective memory that
distinguishes between two conceptual logics of memory
fragmentation: vertical fragmentation and horizontal fragmentation.
It offers a series of case studies of conflict and post-conflict
collective memory, shedding light on the ways various actors
participate in the production, dissemination, and contestation of
memory discourses. With attention to the characteristics of both
vertical and horizontal memory fragmentation, the book addresses
the plurality of diverging, and often conflicting, memory
discourses that are produced within the public sphere of a given
community. It analyzes the juxtaposition, tensions, and
interactions between narratives produced beyond or below the
central state, often transcending national boundaries. The book is
structured according to the type of actors involved in a memory
fragmentation process. It explores how states have been trying to
produce and impose memory discourses on civil societies, sometimes
even against the experiences of their own citizens, and how such
efforts as well as backlash from actors below and beyond the state
have led to horizontal and vertical memory fragmentation.
Furthermore, it considers the attempts by states’ representatives
to reassert control of national memory discourses and the
subsequent resistances they face. As such, this volume will appeal
to sociology and political science scholars interested in memory
studies in post-conflict societies.
This new, thoroughly updated second edition of Bradt's Chile: the
