Unable to commit to his fiancee of nearly four years--and with no clear understanding of what's holding him back--McCarthy finds himself at a crossroads, plagued by doubts that have clung to him for a lifetime. Though he ventures from the treacherous slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro to an Amazonian riverboat and the dense Costa Rican rain forests, McCarthy's real journey is one of the spirit. Disarmingly likable, McCarthy isn't afraid to bare his soul on the page, and what emerges is an intimate memoir of self-discovery and an unforgettable love song to the woman who would be his wife.

Sherman wired Abraham Lincoln, Atlanta is ours, and fairly won!""The fall of Atlanta was not just one more Union victory. It was pivotal to the outcome of the entire Civil War and also to Lincoln's reelection. With the fall of Atlanta, Confederate morale plummeted. The destruction of Atlanta was not just a Union victory over one city, but a key to the end of the war.Fields of Glory traces the story of the campaign from the Tennessee border through the heart of Georgia to Jonesboro. Included is a series of driving tours that enable readers to see firsthand the battlefields and important sites of the campaign. Also included are more than 85 illustrations, 25 original maps, a lively history of the campaign, fascinating tours of the battlefields, articles on military strategy, biographies of generals, the chronology of key battles and important events, sources for additional travel information, a bibliography, and an index.""In General Sherman's mind, "" Jim Miles explains, ""before the Civil War could be brought to a victorious conclusion, Atlanta had to be destroyed and the Confederacy denied its products. From that day, Atlanta was a doomed city.""""

Many accounts of tourism have adopted an almost paradigmatic visual model of the gaze. This collection presents an expanded notion of spectatorship with a more dynamic sense of embodied and performed engagement with places. The approach resonates with ideas in anthropology, sociology, and geography on performance, invented traditions, constructed places and traveling cultures. Contributions highlight the often contradictory, contested and paradoxical constructions of landscape and community involved both in tourist attractions and among tourists themselves. The collection examines many different practices, ranging from the energetic pursuit of adventure holidays to the reading of holiday brochures. It illustrates different techniques of seeing the landscape and a variety of ways of creating and performing the local. Chapters thus demonstrate the mutual entanglement of practices, images, conventions, and creativity. They chart these global flows of people, texts, images, and artefacts. Case studies are drawn from diverse types of tourism and destination focused around North America, Europe, and Australasia. Simon Coleman teaches in the Department of Anthropology, University of Durham. Mike Crang is Lecturer in the Department of Geography, University of Durham.

Tower Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world. Designed by Sir Horace Jones (1819–1887) and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry (1836–1918) over a period of eight years, it was the largest and most advanced bascule bridge ever completed when it opened in 1894, requiring 11,000 tons of steel and involving more than 400 construction workers. This impressive feat of engineering helped sustain the growing commercial activity at the docks and warehouses in East London, and the sudden influx of daily commuters brought in from the newly built London Bridge station. Still in full use today, the bridge is lifted an average of 850 times a year. This Victorian masterpiece remains a highly important crossing on the River Thames, as well as being one of London’s defining landmarks. This compelling album of photographs by Harry Cory Wright allows us to experience the awe-inspiring structure of Tower Bridge in exquisite detail, from the intricate machinery and original mechanisms inside the control rooms and secret corridors, to the great cavernous space within the bascule chamber. It includes an interview with Senior Technical Officer Glen Ellis, who shares his own daily experience of lifting the bridge, evoking an incredibly vivid sense of ‘being there’.
Each walk is arranged chronologically, and has a major historical theme. Together, they take the walker through 4,000 years of Kentish history. For through migration, trade and invasion, Kent has had close contact with the continent throughout its history. As with all walking books detailed directions are given, including parking convenient stopping or resting places, and suggested diversions or alternatives. The book is sure to appeal to locals and tourist alike.
Through more than two hundred stunning photographs, The Mississippi Gulf Coast illustrates what visitors and residents alike love about the region-the sunrises and sunsets; the distinctive character of each town along the waterfront; the historic places; the traditional coast cuisine; and the arts, gaming, and watersports. Passing from the western part of the coast to the east, The Mississippi Gulf Coast will refamiliarize some and introduce others to the Coast of Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, D'Iberville, Ocean Springs, Gautier, Pascagoula, and Moss Point. Through words and images, photographer Timothy T. Isbell provides a brief history of the area, from the first settlers to the waves of immigrants who have helped shape the character and culture of the region, and a reflection of the current state of the Gulf Coast. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has spent more than a decade recovering from the ruin left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. During the earliest days following the storm, Isbell was sent out to document the grim aftermath of Katrina. Seeing damage everywhere, he became overwhelmed by the destruction surrounding him and soon wanted to see images of hope and recovery. It was at that point he made a promise to show the ""true Mississippi Gulf Coast,"" an area known for its natural beauty and spirit. The beautiful photographs in The Mississippi Gulf Coast are a testament to renewal in the face of adversity.
Revised and Updated with a New Introduction During the 19th century the Balkan countries became the subject of a rather romantic fascination for the public at large. This vision of the area has been created in large measure by the writing of women travelers such as those represented in this volume. The achievements of these women are quite remarkable: in many cases their travels were adventurous, and even dangerous, reaching into parts of the countryside which were remote and hardly known to outsiders. Not only as travelers but also in the fields of medical and military service, scholarship and education, journalism and literature, did these women contribute in very significant ways to the expansion of women's horizons and to the attempt to gain greater freedom for women in society in general.
