Colour Atlas of Glacial Phenomena (Hardcover): Michael J. Hambrey, Jurg C. Alean Colour Atlas of Glacial Phenomena (Hardcover)
Michael J. Hambrey, Jurg C. Alean
R5,758 Discovery Miles 57 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Considering that glaciers and ice sheets cover about 10% of the Earth's land surface in a world where human civilization is increasingly impacted by the effects of changing glacial activity, Colour Atlas of Glacial Phenomena presents itself as an indispensable guide for students, professionals, and researchers who want to be better informed while studying and tracking the future influences of glaciers and ice sheets on the global environment. While stressing both the beauty and utility of glaciers, the authors cover critical features of glaciers and their landforms and provide useful explanations of the key concepts in glaciology and glacial geology. The authors expand to demonstrate how our lives are influenced by the Cryosphere, a key component of the Earth system and how this heightens the vulnerability of glaciers and ice sheets to deterioration. This illustrated book also helpfully maps out regions of mountain glaciers and ice caps around the world for a practical reference and discusses the products of glacial erosion and deposition integral to understanding rising global sea levels.

Floods and Landslides - Integrated Risk Assessment (Hardcover): R. Casale, C. Margottini Floods and Landslides - Integrated Risk Assessment (Hardcover)
R. Casale, C. Margottini
R2,449 Discovery Miles 24 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book reviews the state of the art of natural disasters like floods and landslides, highlighting the possibility of safe and correct land planning and management by means of a global approach to territory. In fact, the events deriving from slope dynamics (gravitational phenomena) and fluvial dynamics (floods) are commonly triggered by the same factor (heavy rainfall), occur at the same time and are closely related. For this reason, this book analyses floods and slope stability phenomena as different aspects of the same dynamic system: the drainage basin.

The Chemistry of Phosphate and Nitrogen Compounds in Sediments (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Han L. Golterman The Chemistry of Phosphate and Nitrogen Compounds in Sediments (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Han L. Golterman
R4,159 Discovery Miles 41 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book deals with the processes constituting the cycles of the phosphate and nitrogen compounds in sediment and the phosphate equilibria between the sediment and the overlying water. Sediment, to a large extent, controls the P- and N concentrations and thus primary production. In most waters, too high concentrations of these compounds cause excessive growth of algae, causing so-called eutrophication. Abatement of this can only be achieved after a complete understanding of the quantitative role of sediment in the P- and N cycle.
Thus, for the phosphate cycle the following processes are evaluated:
-P-binding onto sediments, viz., onto iron hydroxide and calcium carbonate (limestone), -Fractionation of phosphate in relation to its bioavailability,
-Release processes under anoxic and oxic conditions, and their dependence on pH changes,
-Further items taken into account, including the influence of drying of sediment and its resuspension by wind. For the nitrogen cycle, the following are discussed:
-Ammonification of organically bound nitrogen,
-Nitrification and denitrification, including Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction,
-Links with other chemical elements are made.

Land Degradation, Desertification and Climate Change - Anticipating, assessing and adapting to future change (Paperback, New):... Land Degradation, Desertification and Climate Change - Anticipating, assessing and adapting to future change (Paperback, New)
Mark S. Reed, Lindsay C. Stringer
R1,598 Discovery Miles 15 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although much is known about the processes and effects of land degradation and climate change, little is understood about the links between them. Less still is known about how these processes are likely to interact in different social-ecological systems around the world, or how societies might be able to adapt to this twin challenge. This book identifies key vulnerabilities to the combined effects of climate change and land degradation around the world. It identifies triple-win adaptations that can tackle both climate change and land degradation, whilst supporting biodiversity and ecosystem services. The book discusses methods for monitoring effects of climate change and land degradation, and adaptations to these processes. It argues for better co-operation and knowledge exchange, so that the research, land user and policy communities can work together more effectively to tackle these challenges, harnessing the "wisdom of crowds" to assess vulnerability and adapt to climate change and land degradation, whilst protecting livelihoods and biodiversity.

Modelling the Evolution of Natural Fracture Networks - Methods for Simulating the Nucleation, Propagation and Interaction of Layer-Bound Fractures (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Michael John Welch, Mikael Luthje, Simon John Oldfield
R3,668 Discovery Miles 36 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents and describes an innovative method to simulate the growth of natural fractural networks in different geological environments, based on their geological history and fundamental geomechanical principles. The book develops techniques to simulate the growth and interaction of large populations of layer-bound fracture directly, based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and subcritical propagation theory. It demonstrates how to use these techniques to model the nucleation, propagation and interaction of layer-bound fractures in different orientations around large scale geological structures, based on the geological history of the structures. It also explains how to use these techniques to build more accurate discrete fracture network (DFN) models at a reasonable computational cost. These models can explain many of the properties of natural fracture networks observed in outcrops, using actual outcrop examples. Finally, the book demonstrates how it can be incorporated into flow modelling workflows using subsurface examples from the hydrocarbon and geothermal industries. Modelling the Evolution of Natural Fracture Networks will be of interest to anyone curious about understanding and predicting the evolution of complex natural fracture networks across large geological structures. It will be helpful to those modelling fluid flow through fractures, or the geomechanical impact of fracture networks, in the hydrocarbon, geothermal, CO2 sequestration, groundwater and engineering industries.

Volcanic Debris Avalanches - From Collapse to Hazard (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Matteo Roverato, Anja Dufresne, Jonathan Procter Volcanic Debris Avalanches - From Collapse to Hazard (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Matteo Roverato, Anja Dufresne, Jonathan Procter
R4,661 Discovery Miles 46 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents an overview of volcanic debris avalanche deposits, which are produced by partial volcanic edifice collapse, a catastrophic natural phenomenon. It has been 40 years since the volcanic debris avalanche associated with the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, and our understanding of these events has grown considerably in the interim. Drawing on these advances, the book addresses all aspects of volcanic debris avalanches. Though previously overlooked in field-based geological and volcanological studies, these deposits are now known to be associated with most volcanoes and volcanic areas around the world. The book presents state-of-the-art ideas on the triggering and emplacement mechanisms of these events, supported by field and analogue studies, as well as new simulations tools and models used to determine their physical characteristic and hazards.

Channelized Rivers - Perspectives for Environmental Management (Hardcover): A. Brookes Channelized Rivers - Perspectives for Environmental Management (Hardcover)
A. Brookes
R12,067 Discovery Miles 120 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Channelized Rivers Perspectives for Environmental Management Andrew Brookes Environmental Consultant, Reading, UK For centuries engineers have modified river channels in order to control floods, drain land, prevent erosion and improve navigation. The natural shape of many rivers has been dramatically changed, often with dire environmental consequences. This book demonstrates the role fluvial geomorphology can play in the design of river channels, both to lessen environmental impact and to enhance the success of channelization schemes. It considers the physical and biological impacts of channelization, the repercussions downstream and in the adjacent floodplain. Revised procedures and designs are proposed which minimize harsh environmental impacts. The interdisciplinary approach of the book offers river managers the opportunity to make more environmentally sensitive decisions in the course of their work. The book will be of great interest to geomorphologists, biologists and civil engineers working in the water industry.

Advances in Fluvial Dynamics & Stratigraphy (Hardcover): P.A. Carling Advances in Fluvial Dynamics & Stratigraphy (Hardcover)
P.A. Carling
R9,963 Discovery Miles 99 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Developments in the modelling of sediment transport in rivers and the interactions with the river--bed have been remarkable over the last two decades. This progress has increased the understanding of the nature of turbulence, and the ability to replicate mathematically simple flow--particle interactions which can be observed experimentally. In addition, quite elegant models of stratigraphic complexes have evolved because of the growing computational power available to scientists. As always, additional knowledge has raised even more intriguing questions and the quest for explanation of phenomena has led to increased specialisation. Therefore, there are few fluid dynamicists or sedimentologists who can successfully span the two disciplines. The intention of this book is to assist various specialists on keeping abreast of current developments in related areas. The book initially focuses on hydrodynamics of turbulent flow, followed by basic two and three--dimensional flow through straight and curved channels and the flow over bed topography. This is then followed by a consideration of initial motion, sediment transport and particle sorting. The potential for modelling fluidsediment interactions is provided at the end of the first section. Linking chapters then follow, considering the preservation potential of fluvial bedforms in the stratigraphic record and the basic variety of channel morphology recognised in sedimentary studies. Subsequent chapters consider reconstructing hydraulic process and fluvial morphology from stratigraphy; the influence of bedform and depositional controls on packing of economically important sedimentary rocks; and recent advances in modelling subsurface fluvial stratigraphy. A final chapter provides a brief view of future perspectives. The objective of this volume is to review recent advances made by geologists and hydrodynamicists in an accessible manner and to promote an increased and fruitful dialogue between sedimentary geologists, geomorphologists and hydrodynamicists.

Kumar Hemant Singh, Ritesh Mohan Joshi
R1,554 Discovery Miles 15 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents selected articles from the workshop on "Challenges in Petrophysical Evaluation and Rock Physics Modeling of Carbonate Reservoirs" held at IIT Bombay in November 2017. The articles included explore the challenges associated with using well-log data, core data analysis, and their integration in the qualitative and quantitative assessment of petrophysical and elastic properties in carbonate reservoirs. The book also discusses the recent trends and advances in the area of research and development of carbonate reservoir characterization, both in industry and academia. Further, it addresses the challenging concept of porosity portioning, which has huge implications for exploration and development success in these complex reservoirs, enabling readers to understand the varying orders of deposition and diagenesis and also to model the flow and elastic properties.

The Geology of Iran: Tectonic, Magmatism and Metamorphism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Mansour Ghorbani The Geology of Iran: Tectonic, Magmatism and Metamorphism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Mansour Ghorbani
R4,012 Discovery Miles 40 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes the geological setting of Iran throughout geological history, referring to paleogeography and general geodynamics. Also, all structural units, faults, tectonic phases and orogeny occurred in the geology of Iran have been evaluated. Magmatic and metamorphic rocks along with ophiolitic complexes have extensive outcrops in Iran, and these rocks with Precambrian age constitute its basement. Study and identification of such rocks not only throws light on the geodynamic issues of Iran but also helps in recognition of the mode of formation and evolution of the sedimentary basins located within various structural divisions of the country. Moreover, the majority of metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits are associated either directly or indirectly with magmatic, and at time metamorphic, rocks. In the Magmatism and Metamorphism parts, it is tried to thoroughly consider the various aspects of the igneous rocks, whether intrusive, extrusive or young volcanoes, from the point of view of petrography, geochemistry and geodynamics. In addition, the major intrusive bodies of Iran have been presented along with their petrologic and chronologic specifications in tables, mentioning the bibliographic resources.

Richard J. Chorley, Antony J Dunn, Robert P. Beckinsale
R1,727 Discovery Miles 17 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This re-issue, first published in 1964, is the first of a seminal series analysing the development of the study of landforms, from both the geographical and geological point of view, with especial emphasis upon fluvial geomorphology. Volume 1 treats the subject up to the first important statement of the cycle of erosion by W. M. Davis in 1889, and attempts to identify the most significant currents of geomorphic thought, integrating them into the broader contemporary intellectual frameworks with which they were associated. As well as dealing with such key figures as Werner, De Saussure, Hutton, Playfair, Buckland, lyell, Agassiz, Ramsay, Dana, Peschel, Powell, Gilbert and Davis, attention is also given to many less important contributions by American, British and continental workers. A spirited biographical treatment, attractively set off by contemporary portraits, diagrams and sketches, will make this book of great interest to the historian of science, and indeed to the general reader, as well as to the student and scholar in geomorphology, hydrology and any other earth science.

Disposal of All Forms of Radioactive Waste and Residues - Long-Term Stable and Safe Storage in Geotechnical Environmental... Disposal of All Forms of Radioactive Waste and Residues - Long-Term Stable and Safe Storage in Geotechnical Environmental Structures (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Michael Lersow, Peter Waggitt
R1,480 Discovery Miles 14 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book describes repository solutions for all types of radioactive waste and residues in different geotechnical repository structures. The focus is initially on existing or planned final disposal sites in Germany and the process of finding sites. However, international comparisons are drawn, especially to locations in the US. This affects both the repository structures and the legal requirements. The radioactive substances considered include residues from uranium ore processing, as well as low and intermediate level radioactive waste up to heat generating, high level radioactive wastes, such as spent fuel and vitrified waste from reprocessing. In order to evaluate the repository structures and their inventories, a dimensionless radiotoxicity index Ai / Fi [activity of radionuclide quantity (Ai) related to the exemption limit of radionuclide (Fi)] has been introduced. This gives the reader a well-founded overview of the degree of inconsistency in the handling of safety requirements for the respective geotechnical environmental structures. This creates the necessary transparency on this issue, which has not been previously available and is required by stakeholders today. The long-term security, the duration of the observation period and the certainty of the safety prognosis are also discussed in the book as well as the participation of subsequent generations in current and possible future repositories. This is vital as nuclear energy will continue to be used worldwide in the long term. The international repository projects presented have all been subjected to the same evaluation criteria. This applies both to existing operational project as well as those about to be commissioned and the processes for seeking locations. Special attention has been paid to monitoring, both operational and long-term monitoring. This broad range of topics makes this book a very valuable read for both the interested public and the professional world.
