2009 reprint of the 1937 edition. Ernest Jones (1887-1965) was renowned for his accomplishments in teaching many famous professional golfers as well as amateurs. He tutored Virginia Van Wie for many years, including during her stretch of three consecutive U.S. Women's Amateur Championships from 1932-34. He also worked with Glenna Collett Vare, Lawson Little, and other top players of the era. After Reading Walter Simpson's book, "The Art of Golf," Jones came to the fundamental conclusion that the key to a successful golf shot was not the correct movement of certain body parts, but the correct movement of the club. Jones had happened upon the then-little-understood fact that the human brain need only experience a persons desire to perform a task. On its own the brain devises a means to create the muscular action to achieve the task. The individual is only aware of "what" they want to do. The brain's action in deciding "how" it will accomplish the task is completely unconscious. This explains how very proficient golfers often report that they have little understanding of "how" they swing and only understand that they can do so when they choose."Swinging Into Golf" is Jones attempt to describe his findings to a larger audience. Jones took every opportunity to share his insights with fellow professionals through a series of lectures and articles.

The nearly 37 million people in the United States who play golf probably all have one thing in common: At some point they have contemplated giving up the game because they were frustrated with the way they were playing. When those blissful moments of precise drives and perfect putts disappear, when the ball seems to have a mind of its own, and when well-grooved swings become totally unhinged, we find ourselves in that panicked state known as a "slump." When Jimmy Roberts, the award-winning reporter and writer, entered his own period of frustration with the game, he decided to ask some of the most famous golfers and successful people in the world for advice. Here, for the first time, are the stories and recollections of eighteen veteran players whose wisdom is both practical and philosophical. Some concentrate on technique (when Phil Mickelson is dissatisfied with the way he's driving the ball, he practices bunker shots to reinforce the most important element of the tee shot--rhythm). Others focus on mental adjustments (Davis Love III remembers his late father's essential advice when he's frustrated: Try less hard). With stories from greats Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Dottie Pepper, Greg Norman, George Herbert Walker Bush, Paul Azinger, and many others, this is an emotional and spiritual first aid kit for anyone who plays the game and even those who don't. As the 41st president says, the way we handle adversities in golf can provide a template for how to handle the challenges in life: Golf lessons can sometimes be life lessons too. There may not be a universal cure-all, but there are many ways to recover from a debilitating slump.
Tiger Woods continues setting the golf world afire through his incredible talent for the game. Few golfers would dare claim greater ability in hitting that dimpled little round ball, but one who easily can was Harry Vardon. In addition to Woods, Vardon's achievements are best compared to those of Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus when discussing the history of golf; but Vardon easily transcends even Jones and Nicklaus in his overall contributions to the game. Vardon possessed even more talents than those he showed with such verve on the course. He wrote classic books on golf (such as this one), popularized the overlapping grip known worldwide as the 'Vardon' grip -- used by 70% of all golfers -- and designed golf courses still in play today. Throughout his life he displayed a consistent passion and love of the game and has contributed immensely to it. The sun no longer always shines on the British Empire, but somewhere in the world every day, on a sun drenched field of lush green grass, golfers vigorously address golf balls using the Vardon grip. Anyone not believing Harry Vardon had a major influence on golf should, if you will excuse me saying so, get a grip on their game!

As football is described as a game of inches,"golf might be depicted as a "game of millimeters." The "fine tuning" that a golfer must develop in order to execute plays has as much to do with the use of the mind as it does with any technical training. Being able to identify successful play and recapture that same feeling in order to repeat it is a mental process that requires specialized training and practice. The Mental Side of Golf provides that training for golfers who can master its technique with practice. This program truly will become the most important and trusted "club" in your bag.

Grantland "Granny" Rice, perhaps the finest sportswriter of his era, penned this charming collection of essays, poems, and tips on the finer points of this potentially maddening hobby. Accompanying the text are Brigg's cartoons which depict the universal and sometimes silly experiences of every golfer. Series editor Herbert Warren Wind contends that "the man who does not laugh, out loud occasionally, at Brigg's cartoons cannot have laughter in his soul". Anyone who has attempted the game of golf will enjoy this comical classic, and just may learn a few things in the bargain. |
