"Golf is not a game, it's a punishment." -David Feherty "If you're one of those people who think golf is a religion, prepare for some seriously funny blasphemy." --Troon McAllister, author of The Green Somewhere in Ireland, A Village is Missing an Idiot is a collection of Feherty's most popular Golf Magazine columns, intermingled with his most outrageous work from Golfonline.com. As an added bonus, readers will be treated to some notorious pieces from his work at the British publication Golf Monthly. Edited by and with a running commentary by Feherty, and accompanied by some of the priceless letters to the editor from readers across the country and around the globe complaining about Feherty's perversity, Somewhere in Ireland is the perfect Father's Day gift for the crankiest duffer in every family.
Most golfers have difficulty with the concept of hitting down at the ball to make it fly. Surprisingly, a great many players surveyed did not even know you need to hit down to get the ball up in the air. Hit Down Dammit concisely explains the concept - and the technique - of hitting down at the golf ball for proper trajectory, increased backspin, much improved distance, proper divot taking, and best of all: consistent shotmaking. If you are inadvertently - or intentionally - hitting up at the ball, Hit Down Dammit is for you. If you are a seasoned amateur who has inexplicably "plateaud" - just cannot seem to get to the next level despite lessons and/or acquiring a library of books and videos - Hit Down Dammit is for you. Symptoms of hitting up include (but are not limited to): - topping the ball - skulling the ball - pushing the ball - slicing the ball - poor distance - difficulty getting off back foot - poor backspin - no divot - fat divots - chunking the ball - thin/fat chip shots - roofing the ball with your driver - inability to hit long irons and/or fairway woods - good shots followed immediately by poor shots Hitting down at the golf ball is not a new concept, but it is a hitherto poorly explained (or completely avoided) concept. All pros agree on the need to hit down, so there is no debate there. Even Tiger Woods, in his 306 page "How I Play Golf," states the need to hit down at the ball - but does not explain how. Hit Down Dammit does. Learn to hit down, watch the ball go up, and your scores go down.

How many ways are there to swing a golf club? Golf magazine writers and TV commentators certainly don't have a shortage of golf swings to analyze. So, I suppose we will never know the answer. This all creates a certain amount of confusion for the average golfer who is trying to improve their swing. After years of frustrating golf and countless swing changes, I thought that there must be a simpler way to look at the golf swing. Rather than look at all the differences, I wondered instead if there was something that all good golfers do that the average golfer generally does not. Anyone that is serious about golf certainly needs to learn the fundamentals, but what I was looking for had more to do with what I call "The Principles of Triangulation." Although inherent to all good golf swings, these principles are rarely given priority when it comes to golf analysis. I believe they are at the heart of every good golf swing and at the core of every good golf shot. Inside your will find a thorough explanation of these principles along with illustrations and drills to help you apply them to your swing. Additional subjects include how to reduce tension, creating lag and how to start the downswing, the difference between a one-plane swing and a two-plane swing and why you should never change your natural way of swinging, and much more. Learning to apply traits that are common to all good players has made my game much more enjoyable and I sincerely hope they do the same for yours - Ron Celano

There are only 34 official Rules of Golf, but it takes more than 20,000 words to make them unintelligible enough so that most golfers cannot understand them properly... so this book doesn't even try. Instead, "GOLF RULES: How to NOT Win a Tournament" lays out many of the ways that pro golfers and others have found to be the correct way to receive penalty strokes and/or get disqualified. Included are numerous bone-headed mistakes that golfers you'll recognize have made, plus humorous golf quotes, an index of the actual rules, some history about the game, plus the author's allegedly witty comments about the game - including his suggestion for designing a perfect game of golf in which no errors (either intentional or unintentional) can be made. This book is an excellent gift for any golfer in the family (or the ex-family), and is a perfect read for any plane or train trip. Written by Gene Grossman, author of the popular Peter Sharp Legal Mystery Series, when reading this book, one will understand why Gene sees so many mysteries in the game of golf.

When Eddie Bennett began playing golf as a way to bond with his father, he quickly displayed a rare talent for the game. After a long and at times tragic road to the PGA Tour, all of the hard work appears to have paid off when it seemed as if Eddie would be a sure candidate for Rookie of the Year. Then Eddie sees something he should not have seen on the back nine of the Congressional Country Club. During a practice round for his first U.S. Open, he witnesses a murder. The killer is the man who will probably be the next President of the United States. He quickly understands his golfing career is ruined, but that is not all. The event forces Eddie underground while he tries to prove what he saw in a bid to get his life back. Eddie begins living a life a world apart from the pampered life on tour. He puts his trust in Atlanta attorney, Bryce Ballyntine, who helps him investigate the murder. Through his connection with Ballyntine, Eddie meets Mug, a terribly ugly but brilliant African-American with a criminal past and a talent for creating new identities. Armed with new credentials, Eddie flees to Mexico where he becomes friends with a golf hustler named Al and his gay partner, Manolo. As it turns out, Manolo has a past connection to the man who is now President. After the administration discovers Eddie in Mexico, he is forced to bolt again. In Belize, Eddie hooks up with Becky, a sexy but flighty scuba instructor. In the Dominican Republic, Eddie again risks exposure when he meets Sister Theresa, a nun who knew him in his past life. Unplayable Lie is much more than a novel about golf and the lessons the game can teach us. It is about coming of age, about attaining goals, and about dealing with the tragedies of life. It is about how the invisible hands of parents' guide us through life, long after they are gone. It is about trust and friendship, and love.

Many golfers would agree with Andy Brumer that there is poetry in the game of golf. And Brumer is not the first to insist that there is more to the game than the superstars, swing gurus, and high-tech equipment that dominate talk of the game today. In this series of essays, Brumer, one of the most insightful writers on golf, considers the game from unexpected and often surprising angles. At once contemplative and compelling, The Poetics of Golf explores the links between golf and life by way of art and literature, philosophy and psychology. In portraits of various players-including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sorenstam, and Arnold Palmer, among others-Brumer teases out the truths that their games can tell us, not just about golf, but about character and courage. And he also offers an unconventional yet enlightening look at the intricacies of the golf swing, course architecture, and golfing equipment. Finally, his book reveals to us-in its content and also in its wide-ranging, often lyrical style-that golf is by no means only a game.
