Perhaps the best golfer ever, Tiger Woods rocketed to the top of a once whites-only sport. Endorsements made him a global brand and the world's richest athlete. The child of a multiracial marriage, Woods and his blond, blue-eyed wife, Elin Nordegren, seemed to represent a new postracial America. Then, in late 2009, Woods became embroiled in a sex scandal that made headlines worldwide. In this concise yet far-reaching analysis, Orin Starn brings an anthropologist's perspective to bear on Tigergate. He explores our modern media obsession with celebrity scandals and their tawdry ritualized drama, yet he offers much more than the usual banal moralizing about the rich and famous. Starn explains how Tiger's travails and the culture of golf reflect broader American anxieties--about race and sex, scapegoating and betrayal, and the role of the sports hero. "The Passion of Tiger Woods" is required reading for all those interested in the high-stakes world of professional golf, the politics of sports and celebrity, and the myths and realities surrounding the flawed yet riveting figure who remains among the most famous athletes of our time.
Often called "Mr. Golf" or the "Icon of Golf," Harry Vardon was not much interested in golf as a child. His brother Tom loved golf and Harry eventually gave it a try in his late teens in his hometown of Gourville, Jersey on the British Channel Islands. Harry became a super star and was the first golfer to ever wear knickerbockers. With the first one being in 1896, Harry went on to win SIX Open Championships - a record that still stands today. In 1900, he toured the United States as the first international golf celebrity and finished his tour by winning the U.S. Open. The movie "The Greatest Game Ever Played" is about Harry's runner up performance at the 1913 U.S. Open. Harry was also a runner up at the 1920 U.S. Open at the age of 50. Harry struggled for years with tuberculosis but managed to win 62 golf tournaments with a record 14 in a row. When his health grew too poor to continue playing, Harry spent his time coaching and writing golf instruction and inspirational books. Harry Vardon died in 1937 in Totteridge, Hertfordshire, England. After his death, the PGA of America created the Vardon Trophy. It is awarded annually to the player on the PGA Tour with the year's lowest adjusted scoring average. This is an absolute "must read" for any golfer who has not yet had the pleasure

After dominating the world of golf from 2000 to 2002, Tiger Woods
struggled with his game in 2003, allowing four relative unknowns to
win major championships. Mike Weir triumphed in the Masters,
becoming the first Canadian to win a major. Jim Furyk emerged
victorious in the U.S. Open. In the British Open, Ben Curtis became
the first player since Francis Ouimet in 1913 to win while playing
in his first major championship. And Shaun Micheel prevailed at the
PGA Championship with the first tour victory of his career.
The series on Sport is one of the most unique among all the categories. It gives ample knowledge on Football, Golf, Basketball, Tennis and Cricket. Each book tells about the origin of the game, its rules and the people who have excelled in each of them.
As Tiger Woods broke down in tears on the 18th green at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, legions of spectators strained their eyes to read the emotion on his face. Like the millions watching on television, they knew that Tiger had just won the British Open, and that his father had recently died. Beyond that, however, they knew precious little -- only that he played with a Nike golf ball, carried an American Express card in his wallet, and, presumably, drove a Buick. They were hungry for more, but everything else about his off-course life, and those of his fellow pros, was forbiddingly well-guarded. Until now. In "The Scorecard Always Lies" veteran "Sports Illustrated" golf correspondent Chris Lewis reaches past the results, stats, and sound-bites to focus on the personalities and personal lives of the sport's top players. While embracing all the drama and excitement of the 2006 PGA Tour season, he takes us inside the locker rooms, hotel rooms, and private planes to deliver an unrivaled, behind-thescenes look at the Tour and the men who play it. Lewis spent thirty weeks of the 2006 season on the road with the best golfers in the world, exploring their backstories, motivations, and preoccupations, and collecting telling, character-revealing tales. He bore witness to both the hard work and the privilege that frame their lifestyles. But he also discovered a Tour that to this point remained largely unknown -- one where a player while pursuing dreams of glory might also be suing his agent, going through a messy divorce, or looking to throw down in the locker room with one of his peers. There's John Daly trying to explain how his wife has just been taken off to jail. There's Chris Couch making a midnight, barefoot run through a derelict district of New Orleans, fearing he was about to be kidnapped, and taking refuge in a tattoo parlor. We watch as Tiger Woods tries to deal with losing his father to cancer, while refusing to abandon his fondness for blue humor. We see Phil Mickelson hanging with rock stars, sharing a Masters victory gift with a national championship-winning college football coach, and hooking up a sportswriter with a would-be groupie's phone number. All in all, we get a rare glimpse of the off-course lives of the Tour's stars and their supporting cast. At turns humorous, touching, and insightful, the book sheds new light on every aspect of Tour life, from easygoing Tuesday practice rounds to feverpitch Sunday showdowns, always taking care to show how their off-course concerns inform their every swing. Fans will savor the fullest portrait yet of a group of players who, throughout their successes and struggles, remain unfailingly smart, funny, and engaging, and make up the most intriguing subculture in all of sports.

Most avid golfers believe that there is a profound connection between the joys and challenges of golf and the joys and challenges of living - that the more devoted we are to the game, the more we learn about ourselves. In Passion for Golf, Roland Merullo looks carefully at those connections and at the reasons why people find themselves irresistibly attracted to golf. Drawing on the triumphs and travails of playing partners, friends, and family members, and mixing in anecdotes from his own adventures on and off the course, Merullo explores the notion of a 'true goal of golf, ' a hidden attraction that, ultimately, has more to do with deep peace and satisfaction than with the dream of playing on the PGA tour. He finds connections between fairway lessons and the mystical wisdom of Lao Tzu, Theresa of Avila, Thoreau, Jesus, Buddha, and Walt Whitman, among many others, and looks into the role of ego, anger, and silence in golf and life. More than anything else, Passion for Golf is a celebration of the game, an examination of the roots of our passion for it, and a meditation on the lessons every golfer carries away from the course and into his or her life. Publishers Weekly wrote, "For average hackers who struggle weekly to lower their scores, this slender, accessible guide offers insight into the emotional stumbling blocks that get in the way of improvement and, most importantly, enjoyment of the game... Readers who enjoyed Michael Murphy's Zen of golf classic, Golf in the Kingdom, should have room for this spiritual journey in their Christmas stocking. And, The Washington Post stated ..".Merullo provides more than enough food for thought for even the most contemplative golfer."

The Golf Mystic is an allegorical presentation of everyday life through the game of golf. Written in conversational style, it is the story of the wayward golf pro (Geoff) who realizes he is failing in the most important parts of his life. His golf career is in disarray and his fianc, Claire has recently left him. Geoff is about ready to give up on the game when he encounters an obscure iconoclastic golfer and teacher in the person of Joe Burlington. While mainstream golf teaching pros have rejected this master, a desperate Geoff is inspired and seeks Joe out for help. After an inauspicious start, Geoff comes to understand that Joe is a rare and special teacher, solidly grounded and uncorrupted by the technical trends and material culture in modern golf and the world at large. His simple sage advice and methods of teaching transcend anything Geoff has experienced before. Joe demonstrates how learning to play the game of golf mirrors life. It is all about relationships, and being in the moment. To be successful, one must embody universal principles of freedom and trust. In golf, these qualities must be combined with sound swing strategies. Joe's prescriptive strategies show Geoff how to view things differently. His combination of practical mental and physical exercises create positive change that bring Geoff and the reader closer to success. Golf Mystic teaches how to blend and balance each moment in life and to understand that peace and joy are based on one's perspective. Woven through the story is a proven program of swing development that will provide golfers with strategies to overcome any physical or psychological problem they may face in golf.
Cannon Shot 3000 is a program which will increase a golfer's drive significantly. It is a proven method from avid golfer, Ronnie Helton.
How much do you really know about your golf clubs? Did you know that: * The lower the loft on your driver, the farther you'll hit it? * Your new driver has a larger "sweetspot?" * You are playing a stiff shaft, because it says so on it. * Women's clubs are designed for women? Fine, but the problem is... NONE OF THOSE THINGS ARE TRUE Tom Wishon, one of the world's leading club designers, takes you on a guided tour of the golf club, explaining in lay language how and why golf clubs work the way they do. Perhaps of even greater importance, he explains what to look for-and what to look out for-when you buy your next club. ..".the average golfer knows little more about golf clubs than what he or she reads in advertising or sees in Golf Channel infomercials. This lack of golf equipment knowledge results in millions of golfers attempting to play an already difficult game with equipment that not only won't, but CAN'T POSSIBLY allow them to play to the best of their ability." It turns out the latest cutting-edge frontier in golf... is plain old-fashioned custom club fitting. Do you think: * That clubheads made from harder metal will hit the ball farther? * The faster you swing, the stiffer your shaft should be? * That your clubs are "just like the ones the pros use?" Find out WHY those things are not true and learn the things they do NOT tell you in the golf club ads
