Every language has its peculiar problems of meaning for the foreign
learner. In the English language, some of the biggest yet most
fascinating problems are concentrated in the area of the finite
verb phrase: in particular, tense, aspect, mood and modality.
Meaning and the English Verb describes these fields in detail for
teachers and advanced students of English as a foreign or second
language. This new third edition uses up-to-date examples to show
differences and similarities between American and British english,
reflecting a great deal of recent research in this area. It also
takes account of the subtle changes which are taking place in the
language today. In print for over 30 years, Meaning and the English
Verb has established itself as a recognised authority on the
meaning and use of verb constructions in English. This updated
third edition will ensure that it remains an invaluable text for
teachers and students of English worldwide.
Coptic is the language of the Ancient Egyptians written in Greek
letters (with some additions) and though it is no longer spoken it
is still the liturgical language of the Coptic Christians of Egypt.
It is thus of great interest to those learning ancient Egyptian as
well as those who want to study one of the earliest Christian
traditions. This well-known grammar, first published in 1977 and
revised in 1983, does not pretend to be an exhaustive study of the
Coptic language, but aims to provide an introduction to the basic
structure of Coptic Grammar as succinctly as possible; the dialect
chosen for this task being Sahidic, the principle literary tongue.
A Short Reference Grammar of Iraqi Arabic is the only volume of its

beginners as well as Arabic speakers wanting to learn the dialect.
It covers the phonology, morphology (word formation of nouns,
verbs, pronouns, adjectives, and numerals, achieved by adding
prefixes and suffixes to roots), and syntax, teaching the reader
how to make the sounds, form words, and construct sentences
This is a book for reference and revision, especially for those in the early stages of studying the Persian language. It uses the official reformed spelling, and gives attention to handwriting, educated standard and educated colloquial pronunciation, and the important polite forms. The grammar is explained with copious examples, all shown both in Persian script and in Roman transliteration. The grammatical themes are grouped logically, and there are cross-references, appendices and a subject index to facilitate the search for the right form.

This monograph studies research conducted for the purpose of
investigating the growth of recognition vocabulary during the early
and middle elementary school years in relation to the development
of morphological knowledge. The children were tested on a selection
of main entry words from a recent unabridged nonhistorical
dictionary by means of definition, sentence, and multiple-choice
questions. The focus of the present study, however, was on the
contribution made by different morphologically defined word types
and by knowledge of morphology and word formation to total
recognition vocabulary at different age and grade levels. The
findings suggest that lexical development can be characterized in
terms of increasing morphological complexity. Further, it was found
that the proportion of known complex words for which there was
evidence that children figured them out by analyzing their
morphological structure increased with age and grade.

Though clinical aspects of epilepsy such as seizure control are
crucially important to its management, increasing attention is
being given to wider quality of life issues. Epilepsy continues to
be an often misunderstood and stigmatising condition; for the vast
majority of people whose seizures can be well controlled, the
social and psychological repercussions are often of greater
significance than the seizures themselves.
The increasing emphasis on the importance of non-clinical outcomes
in the assessment of new treatments and management strategies for
chronic conditions such as epilepsy has stimulated interest in
methodological issues in assessing quality of life. This book
reviews the recent literature on the impact of epilepsy on everyday
experience and the methodological issues involved in assessing that
impact. It also considers the perspectives of a range of health
professionals involved in caring for people with epilepsy and how,
through appropriate management, the impact on their lives can be
minimised.

Fragmentation in Archaeology revolutionises archaeological studies of material culture, by arguing that the deliberate physical fragmentation of objects, and their (often structured) deposition, lies at the core of the archaeology of the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Copper Age of Central and Eastern Europe. John Chapman draws on detailed evidence from the Balkans to explain such phenomena as the mass sherd deposition in pits and the wealth of artefacts found in the Varna cemetery to place the significance of fragmentation within a broad anthropological context.
