The AFEM Handbook of Acute and Emergency Care 2e provides a field reference for emergency care providers in Africa, which addresses the African regional disease burden and recommends diagnostic and management pathways. The text is designed to be used by all levels of providers for the care of acutely ill or injured patients, and covers the full scope of emergency and acute care. It addresses both out-of-hospital and in-hospital interventions, and provides diagnostic and management strategies for the most common emergency care problems faced by providers in sub-Saharan Africa. Uniquely, the text offers care providers management strategies based on available resources: it guides care providers through a rapid systematic and integrated approach to patient stabilisation and resuscitation, stratified to three resource levels: minimal, moderate and full resources. The primary target market includes emergency medicine practitioners (medical doctors and emergency care technicians). In addition, it is aimed at MBChB students and National Diploma students taking modules in Emergency Medicine or Emergency care, and students enrolled in certificate courses in Emergency care at provincial colleges.
This is the updated edition of a medical handbook that deals with basic paediatric and childhood conditions. The book deals with these issues in an accessible, clear, and concise manner. The South African Government's focus on the provision of primary health care makes this text particularly valuable as it deals with paediatric issues related to primary health. Due to a shortage of doctors, nursing staff are expected to provide necessary services. This book equips nurses with the skills to deal with the required procedures. The book is therefore aimed primarily at nurses and, being written by paediatricians, is medically sound. It has been overviewed for relevance to nurses. It presents theory in an interactive fashion, to ensure that training takes place for nurses who are required to take on more and more responsibilities in primary health care facilities.
In our ever-changing environment, healthcare professionals need to keep up-to-date with dynamic and often critical developments in the health services industry. Contemporary Issues in Health Services Management addresses the challenges we face in health services management. Contemporary issues affecting both health services managers and the delivery of such services are presented here based on comprehensive research and investigation. Within the context of South Africa and the African continent as a whole, this essential resource encourages health services professionals to develop a deeper awareness of relevant issues such as the aging population; the burden of chronic diseases; the influence of current information technology and the advancement of healthcare technology on healthcare delivery; education, training, regulation and accreditation; as well as the shift in emphasis from service-centred outlooks to patient-oriented outlooks. The book is packed with the tools needed to develop critical thinking, analytical and communication skills so that health-care professionals can take an informed approach to their work. It also provides health-care professionals with the tools needed to manage a wide variety of challenges they face today in easy-to-understand language, and in a visually appealing format.
The nursing profession in South Africa faces challenges regarding the education and training of students. Well-qualified nurse educators in South Africa enhance the quality of the development of student nurses, and therefore enhance the quality of nursing care. Nurse educator in practice incorporates the latest legislation and applies didactics in theoretical as well as clinical nursing education, using examples to illustrate the text. The title has been specifically written to cover the requirements for registration as a nurse educator at the South African Nursing Council.
Community nursing covers communicable health problems, management of community health services, community health practice and assessment, epidemiology and chronic health problems, the diagnosis and management of HIV/Aids patients, legislation and regulations pertinent to the practice of community health. Prominence is given to preventative health measures, health promotion and sustained wellness. Community Nursing features real-life community health related case studies to enable readers to apply theory to practice. Review questions encourage discussion and allow students to apply learning, while a summary-at-a-glance feature assists student revision. The fourth edition has a greater focus on practical scenarios and includes updated examples relevant to the community health environment. It also features: A new chapter on health trends. Expanded sections on immunisation including new vaccines and HIV/Aids management in chapters 7 and 9. More guidelines on the management of Primary Health Care centres. More emphasis on the process and instruments for community assessment.
Child Health for All includes policies regarding community and
child health issues, on children's legislation and government
social assistance. Information boxes and pull quotes highlight
important criteria and 'take-home' points for students, while
end-of-chapter summary point boxes assist student revision. The
fifth edition features an increased focus on the southern African
context and is updated with the latest developments in the field of
paediatrics.
