In Three Centuries of Girls' Education, Mary Anne O'Neil offers
both an examination and the first English translation of Les
Reglemens des religieuses Ursulines de la Congregation de Paris.
Published in 1705, Regulations is the first pedagogical system
explicitly designed for the education of girls. It is also one of
the few surviving documents describing the day-to-day operations of
early Ursuline schools. O'Neil traces the history of the document
from the writings of the Italian foundress of the Ursulines, to the
establishment of the religious order in Paris in 1612, to the
changes in the organization of Ursuline schools in
nineteenth-century France, and, finally, to Mother Marie de St.
Jean Martin's spirited defense of the traditional French Ursuline
method after World War II. In the eighteenth century, New Orleans
Ursulines used the Regulations as a guide to establish their
schools and teaching methods. Overall, O'Neil's history and
translation recover a vital source for historians of the early
modern era but will also interest scholars in the fields of
education history and female religious life.
A glorious illustrated history of sixteen of the world's greatest
cathedrals, interwoven with the extraordinary stories of the people
who built them. 'An impeccable guide to the golden age of
ecclesiastical architecture' The Times 'Vivid, colourful and
absorbing' Dan Jones 'An epic ode to some of our most beautiful and
beloved buildings' Helen Carr The emergence of the Gothic in
twelfth-century France, an architectural style characterized by
pointed arches, rib vaults, flying buttresses, large windows and
elaborate tracery, triggered an explosion of cathedral-building
across western Europe. It is this remarkable flowering of
ecclesiastical architecture that forms the central core of Emma
Wells's authoritative but accessible study of the golden age of the
cathedral. Prefacing her account with the construction in the sixth
century of the Hagia Sophia, the remarkable Christian cathedral of
the eastern Roman empire, she goes on to chart the construction of
a glittering sequence of iconic structures, including Saint-Denis,
Notre-Dame, Canterbury, Chartres, Salisbury, York Minster and
Florence's Duomo. More than architectural biographies, these are
human stories of triumph and tragedy that take the reader from the
chaotic atmosphere of the mason's yard to the cloisters of power.
Together, they reveal how 1000 years of cathedral-building shaped
modern Europe, and influenced art, culture and society around the
world.
Sounding Forth the Trumpet brings to life one of the most crucial
epochs in America's history--the events leading up to and
precipitating the Civil War. In this enlightening book, readers
live through the Gold Rush, the Mexican War, the skirmishes of
Bleeding Kansas, and the emergence of Abraham Lincoln, as well as
the tragic issue of slavery.
How did a group of scared peasants from a backwater of the Roman
empire - followers of an executed criminal - form the largest
religion on the planet? The story of Christianity, its
transformation from an illegal sect to the religion of emperors,
kings and presidents, and its spread across the globe, is an
endlessly fascinating one. The History of Christianity gives
readers an overview of these extraordinary 2,000 years. It is a
history not only of how Christianity has changed the world, but
also of how the world has changed Christianity. The nine chapters
that constitute this volume are arranged almost chronologically and
take us from the first Christians to Christian Rome, the Byzantine
period, and the spread of Christianity in Russia and in Europe
right up to the Reformation. Boxed features throughout the volume
highlight especially important figures or themes from eachof these
periods. The History of Christianity: The Early Church to the
Reformation will be welcomed by all those wanting a lively and
engaging presentation of the people, events, places, and plain
curiosities that have formed the Christian story.
