The Painted House of Maud Lewis - Conserving a Folk Art Treasure (Paperback, No): Laurie Hamilton The Painted House of Maud Lewis - Conserving a Folk Art Treasure (Paperback, No)
Laurie Hamilton
R490 Discovery Miles 4 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For many years, Maud Lewis was one of Nova Scotia's best-loved folk painters. In the 1990s she was embraced by the rest of the country when the landmark exhibition of her work "The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis" travelled across Canada. By the time the tour was over, half a million people had become acquainted with her delightful work.

Between 1938, when she married Everett Lewis, until her death in 1970, Maud Lewis lived in a tiny one-room house near Digby, Nova Scotia. Over the years, she painted the doors inside and out, the windowpanes, the walls and cupboards, the wallpaper, the little staircase to the sleeping loft, the woodstove, the breadbox, the dustpan, almost everything her hand touched. Her house was a joy to behold, and it became a magnet for tourists as well as a focal point in her village. In 1979, after Everett Lewis died, the Maud Lewis Painted House Society worked diligently to raise funds to acquire, preserve, and display the house as part of the cultural heritage of the area as well as a memorial to their beloved artist.

In 1984, the house and its contents were purchased by the Province of Nova Scotia for the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. In "The Painted House of Maud Lewis," Laurie Hamilton, the conservator at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, shows how all the different parts of the house -- the building itself, the painted household items, even the wallpaper -- were catalogued, conserved, and prepared for exhibition. The preliminary stages of conservation treatment began in 1996 in a most unusual location: the Sunnyside Mall in Bedford, just outside Halifax., where conservators worked in full view of the public. The conservators used established techniques and invented new ones to complete their unique project and documented every stage of the restoration photographically.

The book also features more than sixty-five colour photos including several taken by noted photographer Bob Brooks in 1965 for the "Star Weekly." Today, anyone can visit the tiny house that has become a folk art phenomenon. The restoration story spans two decades, but the story of the Painted House continues as each new visitor to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia finds delight and inspiration in Maud Lewis's joyous vision.

Gill Heriz presents a collection of some of the most inspiring small homes in the UK and the USA. People have been living in small spaces for centuries, for reasons of practicality, mobility, flexibility or personal choice. More recently, tiny homes have become the answer for many who need somewhere affordable to live and who possess the creativity and energy to make something different. A small home can be relatively cheap to build or convert, and gives its owner choices, reflecting the way they want to live and their concern for the impact they have on the environment. Tiny homes can also be stunningly beautiful and imaginative. They ask their owners to be discerning about what belongings they have - what is necessary and what is beautiful. The choices are individual and can be seen as part of a movement away from money and property-slavery to a more simple and connected way of living. Gill Heriz has brought together a collection of some of the most incredible small homes, from houseboats on the water, trailers in the countryside, and micro-apartments in the city, to treehouses in the woods. A traditional Mongolian yurt provides off-grid living for a young couple and their baby. A preacher's wagon offers a chic, flexible space for its owners. There is a reclusive shack set in woodland, homes made from recycled Scotch whisky barrels, and a village of tiny houses for the homeless, all providing comfortable and sustainable accommodation for their pioneering owners.

For autumn, she gathers fallen leaves, seasonal berries, and rose hips for flower arrangements and wreaths. To welcome spring, she turns to a garland made of newly formed fern fronds, while in summer, wildflowers, shells, driftwood and other materials create an effortless bohemian beach look. Winter is embraced with the concept of hygge, using a neutral palette and candlelight for a feeling of coziness. The book features illustrations that focus on only one house in order to demonstrate in practice how simple techniques and natural materials can create varied atmospheres throughout the year. Masureel shows the reader a more mindful way of living and decorating, revealing easy methods of styling the home following a 'less is more' aesthetic to create an atmosphere that is warm, relaxing, and beautiful.

Sue Field
R3,032 Discovery Miles 30 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This enlightening study explores the set design drawings for theatre and live performance, highlighting their unique qualities within the greater arena of drawing practice and theory. The latest volume in the Drawing In series, Scenographic Design Drawing encourages an interdisciplinary dialogue in the field of drawing with the inclusion of illustrations throughout. Scenographic design drawings visualize the images in the designer's 'mind's eye' early in the design process. They are the initial design tool in the creative engagement with theatre, opera, dance, and non-text-based performance. It is, in particular, this body of drawings that is unique as both a performative and a theatrical representation of multiple worlds within the 'stage space'. Sue Field illuminates this illustration process and identifies how these drawings have functioned and developed over time. Scenographic Design Drawing serves to satisfy an emerging global curiosity and a thirst for new knowledge and understanding in relation to the drawings executed by the historical and contemporary scenographer. This work addresses a critical research gap and shows how the scenographic design drawing continues to be a principal site of innovation, subjectivity, originality and authorship in theatre and live performance.
