A good vocabulary and knowledge of spelling is key to success in
all 11 plus and Common Entrance exams, particularly those set by
Durham University's Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) and
Granada Learning (GL). Cloze tests are passages with missing words
or letters which require the child to recognise and select the
answer from a set of several options, or to complete the word with
the correct spelling. They are designed to test a child's
vocabulary and spelling. This book covers the three main question
styles of cloze tests: Word Bank, Multiple Choice and Partial
Words. There are six tests in each question style, each containing
around 25 questions. The online Peer-Compare system helps identify
areas for improvement and gauge progress relative to other children
taking the same tests. For further information about how this
system works, see the inside front cover. Extensively road-tested
by the Eleven Plus Exams centre, all First Past the Post 11+
Essentials books are perfect for use both in the classroom and at
home.
Replaces ISBN 9781908684899. A good vocabulary is at the heart of
11 plus and Common Entrance exams, such as those set by the Centre
for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), compiled by Durham University,
and Granada Learning (GL), also known as NFER. Both the verbal
reasoning and comprehension sections of these exams typically
contain questions to test breadth of vocabulary and ability to
infer meaning for previously unknown words. This book contains
intentionally difficult and unfamiliar vocabulary to encourage
students to infer the meaning of new words from the context of the
given classic or contemporary passage. The Vocabulary in Context
series of books increase in levels of difficulty so as to encourage
consistent, long-term development of reading and comprehension
skills. The purpose of this book is to develop the important skill
of reading in context and not just for memorising new vocabulary.
This book targets the key skills involved in verbal reasoning and
comprehension and is a unique and form of study for the 11 plus.
This book also includes an interesting word origin or idiom on each
page.

Comprising six pupil books and six accompanying teacher's guides,
one for each primary school year, Schofield & Sims Grammar and
Punctuation is a comprehensive programme for teaching grammar and
punctuation while also building on vocabulary, reading and writing
skills. Through structured lessons, stimulating focus texts and
engaging practice activities, children not only learn the correct
terminology and usage of grammar and punctuation, but also build up
the skills, knowledge and confidence to apply them successfully in
their own writing. The Grammar 5 pupil book contains 30 single-page
lessons and covers the National Curriculum requirements for Year 5.
Featured topics include fronted adverbials; relative clauses;
expanded noun phrases; modal verbs and adverbs to express
possibility; conditional sentences; verbs with prefixes and
suffixes; commas to avoid ambiguity; auxiliary verbs; linking ideas
across paragraphs; Standard English and double negatives; and
parenthesis (brackets, commas and dashes). Each pupil book practice
page includes a concise summary of the key learning point for each
lesson, followed by two short 'Try it' exercises and a 'Sentence
practice' activity. Regular 'Revision' pages reinforce learning,
while imaginative 'Writing tasks' allow children to 'show off'
their grammar and punctuation skills in a more formal context.
Additional features provided at the back of the book include a
glossary to support the confident use of grammatical terminology
and a self-evaluation checklist to strengthen understanding and
encourage pupils to assess their own learning. A separate
accompanying teacher's guide, Grammar 5 Teacher's Guide (ISBN
9780721713991), contains lesson plans, answers to all the questions
in the pupil book, and assessment and record-keeping resources.
