Slow Philosophy: Reading Against the Institution makes the case for

establishing our institutional encounters with complex and
demanding works.
Locating poetry in a philosophy of the everyday, Brett Bourbon
continues a tradition of attention to logic in everyday utterances
through Wittgenstein, Austin, Quine, and Cavell, arguing that poems
are events of form, not just collections of words, which shape
everyone's lives. Poems taught in class are formalizations of the
everyday poems we live amidst, albeit unknowingly. Bourbon
resurrects these poems to construct an anthropology of form that
centers everyday poems as events or interruptions within our lives.
Expanding our understanding of what a poem is, this book argues
that poems be understood as events of form that may depend on words
but are not fundamentally constituted by them. This line of thought
delves into a poem's linguistic particularity, to ask what a poem
is and how we know. By reclaiming arenas previously ceded to
essayists and literary writers, Bourbon reveals the care and
attention necessary to uncovering the intimate relationship between
poems, life, reading and living. A philosophical meditation on the
nature of poetry, but also on the meaning of love and the claim of
words upon us, Everyday Poetics situates the importance of everyday
poems as events in our lives.
Bertrand Russell, (1872 - 1970) was a British philosopher,
logician, mathematician, historian, and social critic. Russell's

This book applies the formal discipline of logic to everyday
discourse. It offers a new analysis of the notion of individual,
suggesting that this notion is linguistic, not ontological, and
that anything denoted by a proper name in a well-functioning
language game is an individual. It further posits that everyday
discourse is non-compositional, i.e., its complex expressions are
not just the result of putting simpler ones together but react on
the latter, modifying their meaning through feedback. The book
theorizes that in everyday discourse, there is no algebra of truth
values, but the latter can be both input and output of something
which has no truth value at all. It suggests that an elementary
proposition of everyday discourse (defined as having exactly one
predicate) can, in principle, be indefinitely expanded by adding
new components, belonging neither to subject nor to predicate, but
remain elementary. This book is of interest to logicians and
philosophers of language.
The story of Sosipatra of Pergamum (4th century C.E.) as told by
her biographer, Eunapius of Sardis in his Lives of the Philosophers
and Sophists, is a remarkable tale. It is the story of an elite
young girl from the area of Ephesus, who was educated by traveling
oracles (daemons), and who grew up to lead her own philosophy
school on the west coast of Asia Minor. She was also a prophet of
sorts, channeling divine messages to her students, family, and
friends, and foretelling the future. Sosipatra of Pergamum is the
first sustained, book length attempt to tell the story of this
mysterious woman. It presents a rich contextualization of the brief
and highly fictionalized portrait provided by Eunapius. In doing
so, the book explores the cultural and political landscape of late
ancient Asia Minor, especially the areas around Ephesus, Pergamum,
Sardis, and Smyrna. It also discusses moments in Sosipatra's life
for what they reveal more generally about women's lives in Late
Antiquity in the areas of childhood, education, family, household,
motherhood, widowhood, and professional life. Her career sheds
light on late Roman Platonism, its engagement with religion,
ritual, and "magic," and the role of women in this movement. By
thoroughly examining the ancient evidence, Heidi Marx recovers a
hidden yet important figure from the rich intellectual traditions
of the Roman Near East.
