Find a penny, pick it up All day long you'll have good luck Whether
hopping over cracks, saluting magpies or knocking on wood, we all
seek good fortune through performing curious rituals. But is there
ancient wisdom behind the folklore of superstition? In this
exquisitely illustrated tour through thousands of years of
tradition, Willow Winsham explores the mysterious origins behind
100 of the most intriguing superstitions from across the globe.
Money, magic and the theatre were powerful forces in early modern
England. Money was acquiring an independent, efficacious agency, as
the growth of usury allowed financial signs to reproduce without
human intervention. Magic was coming to seem Satanic, as the
manipulation of magical signs to performative purposes was
criminalized in the great 'witch craze.' And the commercial, public
theatre was emerging - to great controversy - as the perfect medium
to display, analyse and evaluate the newly autonomous power of
representation in its financial, magical and aesthetic forms. Money
and Magic in Early Modern Drama is especially timely in the current
era of financial deregulation and derivatives, which are just as
mysterious and occult in their operations as the germinal finance
of 16th-century London. Chapters examine the convergence of money
and magic in a wide range of early modern drama, from the anonymous
Mankind through Christopher Marlowe to Ben Jonson, concentrating on
such plays as The Alchemist, The New Inn and The Staple of News.
Several focus on Shakespeare, whose analysis of the relations
between finance, witchcraft and theatricality is particularly acute
in Timon of Athens, The Comedy of Errors, Antony and Cleopatra and
The Winter's Tale.
The first book to deal with the history and source of complete
superstitions which exist, or have existed among British people
throughout the world. They are presented in encyclopaedic form, so
that any individual superstition, or collective superstitions
related to one particular subject, can be found under a specified
heading. Some 2300 superstitions are listed in a work of over
230,000 words. Many of the earliest books, particularly those
dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. Home Farm Books are republishing these
classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using
the original text and artwork.

answers to any question in a matter of moments by learning how to
read the patterns revealed by the 16 symbolic figures formed of
single and double points. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance,

ley lines, or hidden within poorly explained tables and charts,
geomancy has become something of a lost art - until now. Earth
Divination, Earth Magic provides a fascinating look into the
history, theory, and practice of geomancy, including a thorough set
of instructions for both casting and interpreting a chart for
yourself, or a friend.

surfer-those who become masters of their materials are all
alchemists. The magic of Alchemy is available to anyone who is

There have been many grimoires attributed to St Cyprian of Antioch
due to his reputation as a consummate magician before his
conversion to Christianity, but perhaps none so intriguing as the
present manuscript. This unique manuscript (unlike the more rustic
examples attributed to St Cyprian called the Black Books of
Wittenburg, as found in Scandinavia, or the texts disseminated
under his name in Spain and Portugal) is directly in line with the
Solomonic tradition, and therefore relevant to our present series
of Sourceworks of Ceremonial Magic. It is unique in that instead of
being weighed down with many prayers and conjurations it addresses
the summoning and use of both the four Archangels, Michael,
Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel as well as their opposite numbers, the
four Demon Kings, Paymon, Maimon, Egyn and Oriens. The later are
shown in their animal and human forms along with their sigils, a
resource unique amongst grimoires. The text is in a mixture of
three magical scripts, Greek, Hebrew, cipher, Latin, (and reversed
Latin) with many contractions and short forms, but expanded and
made plain by the editors. The title literally means 'The Key of
Hell with white and black magic as proven by Metatron'.
In the ancient world the magicians of Egypt were considered the
best. But was magic harmless fun, heartfelt hope, or something
darker? Whether you needed a love charm, a chat with your dead
wife, or the ability to fly like a bird, an Egyptian magician had
just the thing. Christina Riggs explores how the Egyptians thought
about magic, who performed it and why, and also helps readers
understand why we've come to think of ancient Egypt in such a
mystical, magical way in the first place. paragraph indentThis book
takes Egyptian magic seriously, using ancient texts and images to
tackle the blurry distinctions between magic, religion and
medicine. Along the way, readers will learn how to cure scorpion
bites, why you might want to break the legs off your stuffed
hippopotamus toy, and whether mummies really can come back to life.
Readers will also (if so inclined) be able to save a fortune on
pregnancy tests by simply urinating on barley seeds, and learn how
to use the next street parade to predict the future - or ensure
that annoying neighbour gets his comeuppance.
