The Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms - Applications, Second Edition (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Lance D. Chambers The Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms - Applications, Second Edition (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Lance D. Chambers
R7,377 Discovery Miles 73 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Rapid developments in the field of genetic algorithms along with the popularity of the first edition precipitated this completely revised, thoroughly updated second edition of The Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms. Like its predecessor, this edition helps practitioners stay up to date on recent developments in the field and provides material they can use productively in their own endeavors.

For this edition, the editor again recruited authors at the top of their field and from a cross section of academia and industry, theory and practice. Their contributions detail their own research, new applications, experiment results, and recent advances. Among the applications explored are scheduling problems, optimization, multidimensional scaling, constraint handling, and feature selection and classification.

The science and art of GA programming and application has come a long way in the five years since publication of the bestselling first edition. But there still is a long way to go before its bounds are reached-we are still just scratching the surface of GA applications and refinements. By introducing intriguing new applications, offering extensive lists of code, and reporting advances both subtle and dramatic, The Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms is designed to help readers contribute to scratching that surface a bit deeper.

Loewy Decomposition of Linear Differential Equations (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Fritz Schwarz Loewy Decomposition of Linear Differential Equations (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Fritz Schwarz
R2,890 Discovery Miles 28 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The central subject of the book is the generalization of Loewy's decomposition - originally introduced by him for linear ordinary differential equations - to linear partial differential equations. Equations for a single function in two independent variables of order two or three are comprehensively discussed. A complete list of possible solution types is given. Various ad hoc results available in the literature are obtained algorithmically. The border of decidability for generating a Loewy decomposition are explicitly stated. The methods applied may be generalized in an obvious way to equations of higher order, in more variables or systems of such equations.

Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS (Hardcover): Michael R. Hatch Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS (Hardcover)
Michael R. Hatch
R5,894 Discovery Miles 58 940 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Transfer function form, zpk, state space, modal, and state space modal forms. For someone learning dynamics for the first time or for engineers who use the tools infrequently, the options available for constructing and representing dynamic mechanical models can be daunting. It is important to find a way to put them all in perspective and have them available for quick reference.

It is also important to have a strong understanding of modal analysis, from which the total response of a system can be constructed. Finally, it helps to know how to take the results of large dynamic finite element models and build small MATLAB® state space models.

Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS answers all those needs. Using a three degree-of-freedom (DOF) system as a unifying theme, it presents all the methods in one book. Each chapter provides the background theory to support its example, and each chapter contains both a closed form solution to the problem-shown in its entirety-and detailed MATLAB code for solving the problem.

Bridging the gap between introductory vibration courses and the techniques used in actual practice, Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS builds the foundation that allows you to simulate your own real-life problems.

Features

o Demonstrates how to solve real problems, covering the vibration of systems from single DOF to finite element models with thousands of DOF
o Illustrates the differences and similarities between different models by tracking a single example throughout the book
o Includes the complete, closed-form solution and the MATLAB code used to solve each problem
o Shows explicitly how to take the results of a realistic ANSYS finite element model and develop a small MATLAB state-space model
o Provides a solid grounding in how individual modes of vibration combine for overall system response

The Finite Element Method Using MATLAB (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Young W Kwon, Hyochoong Bang The Finite Element Method Using MATLAB (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Young W Kwon, Hyochoong Bang; Series edited by Frank Kreith
R5,136 Discovery Miles 51 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Expanded to include a broader range of problems than the bestselling first edition, Finite Element Method Using MATLAB: Second Edition presents finite element approximation concepts, formulation, and programming in a format that effectively streamlines the learning process. It is written from a general engineering and mathematical perspective rather than that of a solid/structural mechanics basis.

What's new in the Second Edition?

Each chapter in the Second Edition now includes an overview that outlines the contents and purpose of each chapter. The author has also added a new chapter of special topics in applications, including cracks, semi-infinite and infinite domains, buckling, and thermal stress. He discusses three different linearization techniques to solve nonlinear differential equations. Also included are new sections on shell formulations and MATLAB programs. These enhancements increase the book's already significant value both as a self-study text and a reference for practicing engineers and scientists.

Proof Complexity (Hardcover): Jan Krajicek Proof Complexity (Hardcover)
Jan Krajicek
R4,174 Discovery Miles 41 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Proof complexity is a rich subject drawing on methods from logic, combinatorics, algebra and computer science. This self-contained book presents the basic concepts, classical results, current state of the art and possible future directions in the field. It stresses a view of proof complexity as a whole entity rather than a collection of various topics held together loosely by a few notions, and it favors more generalizable statements. Lower bounds for lengths of proofs, often regarded as the key issue in proof complexity, are of course covered in detail. However, upper bounds are not neglected: this book also explores the relations between bounded arithmetic theories and proof systems and how they can be used to prove upper bounds on lengths of proofs and simulations among proof systems. It goes on to discuss topics that transcend specific proof systems, allowing for deeper understanding of the fundamental problems of the subject.

Inside the FFT Black Box - Serial and Parallel Fast Fourier Transform Algorithms (Hardcover): Eleanor Chu, Alan George Inside the FFT Black Box - Serial and Parallel Fast Fourier Transform Algorithms (Hardcover)
Eleanor Chu, Alan George
R5,546 Discovery Miles 55 460 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Are some areas of fast Fourier transforms still unclear to you? Do the notation and vocabulary seem inconsistent? Does your knowledge of their algorithmic aspects feel incomplete? The fast Fourier transform represents one of the most important advancements in scientific and engineering computing. Until now, however, treatments have been either brief, cryptic, intimidating, or not published in the open literature. Inside the FFT Black Box brings the numerous and varied ideas together in a common notational framework, clarifying vague FFT concepts. Examples and diagrams explain algorithms completely, with consistent notation. This approach connects the algorithms explicitly to the underlying mathematics. Reviews and explanations of FFT ideas taken from engineering, mathematics, and computer science journals teach the computational techniques relevant to FFT. Two appendices familiarize readers with the design and analysis of computer algorithms, as well. This volume employs a unified and systematic approach to FFT. It closes the gap between brief textbook introductions and intimidating treatments in the FFT literature. Inside the FFT Black Box provides an up-to-date, self-contained guide for learning the FFT and the multitude of ideas and computing techniques it employs.

Hari Krishna; Series edited by Udo W. Pooch
R5,859 R4,993 Discovery Miles 49 930 Save R866 (15%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Digital Signal Processing Algorithms describes computational number theory and its applications to deriving fast algorithms for digital signal processing. It demonstrates the importance of computational number theory in the design of digital signal processing algorithms and clearly describes the nature and structure of the algorithms themselves. The book has two primary focuses: first, it establishes the properties of discrete-time sequence indices and their corresponding fast algorithms; and second, it investigates the properties of the discrete-time sequences and the corresponding fast algorithms for processing these sequences.
Digital Signal Processing Algorithms examines three of the most common computational tasks that occur in digital signal processing; namely, cyclic convolution, acyclic convolution, and discrete Fourier transformation. The application of number theory to deriving fast and efficient algorithms for these three and related computationally intensive tasks is clearly discussed and illustrated with examples.
Its comprehensive coverage of digital signal processing, computer arithmetic, and coding theory makes Digital Signal Processing Algorithms an excellent reference for practicing engineers. The authors' intent to demystify the abstract nature of number theory and the related algebra is evident throughout the text, providing clear and precise coverage of the quickly evolving field of digital signal processing.

Topics in Galois Fields (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Dirk Hachenberger, Dieter Jungnickel Topics in Galois Fields (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Dirk Hachenberger, Dieter Jungnickel
R2,004 Discovery Miles 20 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This monograph provides a self-contained presentation of the foundations of finite fields, including a detailed treatment of their algebraic closures. It also covers important advanced topics which are not yet found in textbooks: the primitive normal basis theorem, the existence of primitive elements in affine hyperplanes, and the Niederreiter method for factoring polynomials over finite fields. We give streamlined and/or clearer proofs for many fundamental results and treat some classical material in an innovative manner. In particular, we emphasize the interplay between arithmetical and structural results, and we introduce Berlekamp algebras in a novel way which provides a deeper understanding of Berlekamp's celebrated factorization algorithm. The book provides a thorough grounding in finite field theory for graduate students and researchers in mathematics. In view of its emphasis on applicable and computational aspects, it is also useful for readers working in information and communication engineering, for instance, in signal processing, coding theory, cryptography or computer science.

Signal Processing in Electronic Communications - For Engineers and Mathematicians (Paperback): M.J. Chapman, D P Goodall, N.C.... Signal Processing in Electronic Communications - For Engineers and Mathematicians (Paperback)
M.J. Chapman, D P Goodall, N.C. Steele
R1,503 Discovery Miles 15 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This text deals with signal processing as an important aspect of electronic communications in its role of transmitting information, and the language of its expression. It develops the required mathematics in an interesting and informative way, leading to confidence on the part of the reader. The first part of the book focuses on continuous-time models, and contains chapters on signals and linear systems, and on system responses. Fourier methods, so vital in the study of information theory, are developed prior to a discussion of methods for the design of analogue filters. The second part of the book is directed towards discrete-time signals and systems. There is full development of the z- and discrete Fourier transforms to support the chapter on digital filter design.
All preceding material in the book is drawn together in the final chapter on some important aspects of speech processing which provides an up-to-date example of the use of the theory. Topics considered include a speech production model, linear predictive filters, lattice filters and cepstral analysis, with application to recognition of non-nasal voiced speech and formant estimation.
In addition to course requirement for undergraduates studying electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and branches of computer science involving such signal processing as speak synthesis, computer vision and robotics, this book should provide a valuable reference source for post-graduate research work in industry and academia.
An elementary knowledge of algebra (e.g. partial fractions) is a prerequisite, and also calculus including differential equations. A knowledge of complex numbers and of the basic concept of a function of a complex variable is also needed.

On the Achievable Rate of Stationary Fading Channels (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Meik Doerpinghaus On the Achievable Rate of Stationary Fading Channels (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Meik Doerpinghaus
R2,912 Discovery Miles 29 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volumes discusses various aspects regarding the capacity/achievable data rate of stationary Rayleigh fading channels. First, it analyses bounds on the achievable data rate with zero-mean proper Gaussian input symbols, which are capacity achieving in the coherent case, i.e., in case of perfect channel knowledge at the receiver. These bounds are tight in the sense that the difference between the upper and the lower bound is bounded for all SNRs. The lower bound converges to the coherent capacity for asymptotically small channel dynamics. Furthermore, these bounds are extended to the case of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and to the case of frequency selective channels. In a further part, the present work studies the achievable rate with receivers based on synchronized detection and a code-aided channel estimation. For a specific type of such a receiver an approximate upper bound on the achievable rate is derived. The comparison of this approximate upper bound and the achievable data rate with receivers using synchronized detection based on a solely pilot based channel estimation gives an approximate upper bound on the possible gain by using this kind of code-aided channel estimation in comparison to the conventional receiver using a solely pilot based channel estimation. In addition, the achievable data rate with an optimal joint processing of pilot and data symbols is studied and a lower bound on the achievable rate for this case is derived. In this context, it is also shown which part of the mutual information of the transmitter and the receiver is discarded when using the conventional receiver with synchronized detection based on a solely pilot based channel estimation.
